+1...I'm starting to get a feel for the sheer size of the facility

A number of photos starting with 70 of 127 shows natural light flooding into the new space below the plaza/roof. When I saw artist's rendition of Memorial Stadium at night outlined on the west side by the light from the SAHPC, I wondered what the space beneath might look like. Now I have an idea.

It's very exciting, indeed, to see pictures of the evolving structure.

The SAHPC really feels like a cool, modern ship docked next to an old historic boat house.

Will the SAHPC be completed sometime this fall?

The interior still needs to have all systems in place and the finish work done before its ready for occupancy.

I'd be surprised if they could move up the completion date much more than a month or two. The contractor and the subs would have to work relentlessly to move up the completion date.

Oh my - is that one beautiful sight or what?!

Every time I see new pix of how far along the construction is coming, the reflexive, too-long-a-Cal-fan part of me has the same reaction - "Wow- I guess this *is* really happening. Cal is actually getting a beautiful, new, modern sports facility - and I lived to see it! Can definitive solutions to climate change, the end of the recession, world peace and maybe even a new years day in Pasadena be far behind.....?" *Such* a nice feeling.....

Putting aside the excitement of seeing this state-of-the-art/work-of-art structure finally happening, and having these great pictures being able to show, finally, what it will really look like; I have to make one other comment.

For those of us non-engineering, non-technical types; it is an absolute marvel at the amount of work and skill it takes to make this happen. When I look at the beams and supports and rebar and pipes and wires and everything else, I realize that it was a person that made each of those things happen. Each rebar connection meant that somebody had to do it. Plus all of the design and planning. When I see this complex structure, it is just an amazing feat.

Perhaps to those out there that know engineering and construction, it may be more run-of-the-mill, but even though I am a project manager (not construction) and therefore know how much planning and control it takes to execute a project of this magnitude, I am still in awe of the work that took place by human hands to put this phenomenal structure together.

That may seem silly, but to me it is amazing for all of the skills and disciplines coming together to make it work.

My hat's off to all those working so hard!

I prefer Oski's Slovak cousin, but here you go!

First off, is a sighting of the Cal Muscle Milk SUV on University. It had Oregon plates, so I'm a little suspicious...

Next is a photo of the Northside of the SAHPC looking down at the Elevator. To the left of the Elevator is the flight of stairs (not visible) where our Bears will make their way from the locker room to Memorial.

Now, the mystery of the long step in one of my previous sets is answered. They filled the lower area with dirt. I'm guessing grass will be in place for future viewing from the rim. In addition, you can see in these following pics that they've begun to put windows over the large openings to bring nature light into the weight room.

Trees! Nobody tell the tree huggers! There are about 12 trees planted, thus far. I took this pictures last week but forgot to post them till I saw your plea...

I'm hoping I'll be able to take these stairs to my seats in Section I in 2012. All of the outdoor stairways are complete. I'm wishing they'd be available for one home game this year to get us excited about the direction of Cal football this awesome facility will take us.

very cool shots Jan....

Remember the sketches for the SAHPC showed the trees and grass on the plaza on top.. I wonder if anyone knows if there is a plan to have the plaza open by the UW game or not... would be nice to see it this fall especially as the heavy recruiting season - visits after UW and before our bowl game (I am optimistic) which would really add to the sense of what the whole area will look like for those considering Cal..

The Plaza will not be open by UW...in fact, the Plaza still will get pedestals & pavers over a sand bed on the concrete podium you now walk on. What we have this year is a temporary access only. Patience....

Actually, no it isn't. They are two different structures. The come close to each other, but they are independent of each other.

I was being ironical, but it sure does look like one structure. (Wasn't there a connecting walkway or some such that was a key part of the case?)

I'm just glad that CAL finally won the court case over a bunch of (insert curse words here).

I get riled up/angry thinking about those dark days. So glad it's behind us. I'm really looking forward to seeing the progress when I visit the stadium next month.

Large trench dug on east side (lowering of field?), nearly all benches removed on west/south/north, haz-mat suit guys removing asbestos from Blue Zone, small section of yellow seat back demos on west side, etc.

Nice photos. Thanks for posting them.

Isn't that trench on the east side? The field will be lowered, but it seems logical to me that before that can happen, the existing irrigation and drainage systems need to be removed. Even so, the trenching in the photos leaves me a tad mystified: I'm not sure why trenching is going on in that area.

I'd guess that the hazmat workers in the white moon suits are removing asbestos as that sign near Section M implies. They're probably also working on lead paint removal.

Don't be mystified, Mr. Dempster. I was on campus and took a walk up Tightwad hill as well. There were 2 workers lifting large metal-wire walls (sorry for the laymen term) and placing them against the wall of the ditch. There was also one of those machines that pounds long metal rods into the earth at work near them. I'm guessing they're re-enforcing the ground beneath the East Side sections and creating a retaining wall like they did on the SAHPC before the major work begins.

Go BEARS!

Previous posters are correct regarding the trench along the east side of the field. Per the latest project update they are installing a retaining wall to support the eastern stands which will allow for lowering the field.
