I recall Moondog Mane, though I wouldn't know him if he walked in and body slammed me.

I remember him as one of the best "losers". User to wear what looked like
a large Pamper. Favorite move....running away from his opponent. :rollinglaugh:

Jerry Lollar from Hayward was the greatest loser of all-time. Lost every match. Worse than the Washington Generals. Great stuff.

Watching wrestling and roller derby on channel 2, and also Captain Satellite! What could be better? Somebody pass the Coco Puffs!

Wow, I hadn't thought about Captain Satellite in ages! Remember Mayor Art? I was on that when I was 5! What a ****er. Here in Philadelphia they had their own regional programs like that - Captain Noah, Chief Halftown, and Sally Starr. People around here always ask me which I watched, and when I say none of them I get a quizzical "How is that possible?" look!

And as for the Cocoa Puffs.... I just bought a box last week on sale! Who said you have to grow up, right? :rollinglaugh:

I had totally forgotten Lonnie "Moondog" Mayne! Here are some links:

http://www.obsessedwithwrestling.com/profiles/m/moondog-mayne.php

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moondog_Mayne

What a character! And it brought back other memories like his bouts with Karl and Kurt Von Steiger, Stan Stasiak, Mr. Fuji and his last San Francisco title bout where he beat Roddy Piper in July 1978, a month before he died in a car crash in SoCal.

I had totally forgotten about that part of my life. Wow, what memories!

Moondog Mayne, Haystack, Pat Patterson and Andre the Giant are the ones I seem to most remember... Being of Italian ancestry, I now remember having pride in probably one of the all-time greats, Bruno Samartino. I believe I even named our dog Bruno because of him, lol.

How about Marshall Jay? A colleague of mine and I were reminiscing about him a couple of months ago. He apparently started back in Iowa.

never saw her wrestle but remember reading about her in those magazines.

Just google her and she actually was the oldest champion at 76 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Fabulous_Moolah

.....hmmmmm thank goodness i stopped watching in the late '70. Bad enough watching an old guy wrestle but watching my grandma..kind of repulsive!

I got hooked watching Rasslin with Stevens, Gomez, and Shabuya when I was visiting my uncle in Sacramento. My uncle turned on Wrestling. I almost said 'You watch this junk?' but decided that would be rude, so I watched it. At the end of the first match, which Ray Stevens won, Walt Harris interviewed Ray Stevens. "how does it feel to be on the first match instead of the main event?" Walt asked Ray. Stevens answered, "Listen you pencil neck, anytime I fight it's the main event. The only reason I wanted to go first was so I could get out of this stinking town as soon as possible." That got me hooked. After all the political correct interviews on other sports, it was refreshing to see this. A little after the Giants moved to San Francisco, after a game, Russ Hodges was interviewing Ed Mathews of the Braves. After question by Hodges, Matthews answered by calling San Francisco, 'CISCO'. Hodges said 'Over here we call it 'San Francisco', not 'Cisco'." Mathews answered "I'm very sorry, I meant 'San Francisco'. I'll call it San Francisco from now on." Once when Walt Harris was interviewing Ray Stevens, and Stevens call San Franciso 'CISCO'. Walt Harris said 'We call It San Francisco'. Ray Stevens answered,'I call this stinking town 'Cisco' because that's all it deserves to be called. Stevens also made many ethnic comments which I won't repeat on this board.

Who had the "sleeper hold?" Pressure to each side of the neck until the opponent just collapsed!

Damn! You had better start another thread on roller derby. I remember having a crush on Ann Carvello and her white lipstick. I remember how the Bay Bombers were always the nice guys whereas the visiting teams were always nasty and hated by the local fans. It totally shocked me when I saw a game from the East Coast where the beloved Bay Bombers were the nasty team and hated by their local fans. Kinda the same experience as finding out that pro wrestling was fixed and there is no real Santa Claus.

That's a great site. It's the same one we found a few months back, but it is continuously updated. I especially like the "Marshal's Code" with things like:

A deputy never betrays a trust.
A deputy always tells the truth.
A deputy is kind to older folks, small children and animals.
A deputy is free from racial and religious prejudice.
...
A deputy respects womanhood, his parents and the laws of his country.
A deputy is a patriot.

We need more deputies! Marshal J--ahead of his time.

Thanks for posting the pic of my childhood crush. Not bad. But I thought she was a lot hotter than that. I guess young boys like me back then have different standards. And maybe she took too many elbows to the chops from Tuffy Brazoon.

when he came back to America in the mid sixties after a 3 month tour of Japan, I'll never forget it. The first match he was back on tv, his hair was crewcut short. After the match when Walt Harris interviewed him, what always stuck in my mind was instead of saying "Listen Harris", he instead opened the interview with "well Walt." He then proceeded to explain how when he was in Japan he wanted to promote the U.S. in a positive way so he decided to wrestle by the rules, and it had now carried over to the U.S. Of course after that, whenever things got tough, good guy Stevens would still exclaim "I can break the rules as good as anybody!"

How old was she in that pic? I remember all those days back in the 60's as a kid when I wanted to be the next Charlie O'Connell. Joanie vs. Anne. What great theater for a kid! Screw the freakin' Power Rangers and Pokemon.... kids today, there was nothing in the world like Roller Derby and the NWA! :woohoo

Just a few second hand stories.

My late cousin, who I didn't talk to very often, as she lived on the east coasttold me a story about getting bumped off a flight many years ago because they needed the whole row of seats for a wrestler, who turned out to be Haystack.

Also, a friend worked on a pit crew, I believe it was midget cars, and Ray Stevens was the boss on the crew. Said he was a good guy, but talked about the cars and said little if anything about wrestling.

It was a Joe Starkey story that a friend told me about the Cal basketball team waiting for a plane out of Montana in the '80's I think, and there was a group of WWF wrestlers there. They chatted with the players and signed autographs. Anyone else hear that one? The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkov, among others.

The upload shows the picture that appeared in the paper wasn't in he link. It was in the first sports page.

Thanks for posting this, Richy! Great memories, indeed, of a legend long out of our memory, but rekindled in death.
