I love Lois the Pie Queen. Also very partial to Crepevine. Back in the day when a close friend nearby we often broke our fast at the Rockridge Cafe. Delicious.

Expensive

Food is mediocre at best.

Service is terrible. They bill you for the tip, probably so they will get one at all.

Any opinion on Millbrae Pancake House or Christie's in Burlingame? Anything else good in the area?

Can't go wrong with Christie's. My usual is the linguia with two eggs (overeasy) with hash browns. But everything there is very good and portions are extremely generous. You won't need to eat until breakfast the next day.

I'll second the recommendation for Joanne's in South City (right off El Camino). Or try Nini's in San Mateo - it's in a residential area, but drive by and you'll see the crowd waiting.

Definitely a fan of La Note, we eat there whenever we are in the Bay Area. There are a smattering of other good places we frequent but I'm having problems digging names out of my noggin at the moment.

I've only been to La Note once, and it was for lunch. I thought it felt a little bit fake with all the decorations - almost theme restaurant like. I had the croque monsieur, but the waitress seemed to have a poor grasp of French pronunciation and called it a "croque mon-sure".

I thought Mama's was OK (I brought my car in for servicing at the car dealer across the street) and ate there a couple of times. The coffee was hot, the service was friendly, although I guess sometimes one wonders how many tattoos and piercings one can get before customers find it too disturbing.

As for great breakfast places, how about Cafe Fanny on San Pablo at Cedar? I haven't had breakfast there in a while, but I remember ordering a "poached on prosciutto and one for here", which was two poached eggs on thin-sliced prosciutto - all on top of two slices of pain au levain (bread), along with a cafe au lait (really just a caffe latte) served in a bowl.

I haven't been there for breakfast yet, but I've been meaning to try out Rudy's Can't Fail Cafe in Emeryville - on Hollis. It seems to be really popular with the Pixar employees across the street.

Are you seriously bagging on someone for using the word brunch? It's neither yuppie or marina like slang - it's a word that's been around forever. And I'm pretty sure well over half of these restaurants mentioned call their weekend meals brunch on the menu.

I actually thought it was a good comeback, no sarcasm intended.

The topic was breakfast, which I associate with something you can eat before 10am and almost every day. Brunch is usually reserved for weekends, in fact some places just call their breakfast, brunch on the weekend. I guess I was just distinguishing everyday places from places that only serve on weekends. As to yuppie, I'll bet weekend only places are more expensive. Sorry if I touched a nerve.

Rudy's is pretty good, although I don't think it's high praise that employees of the company across the street will walk all the way over there

Black Bear Diner a chain that started in Mt. Shasta offers very large breakfast. The closest to Berkeley is in Walnut Creek.

Ha! +1. Was wondering if anyone would bring up Black Bear. "The Grizz" is an enormous, unforgiving, Mother F'er of a meal.

How 'bout Delancey Street Restaurant? The food doesn't blow you away, but the ridiculously cheap prices/location do. Great place to bring out-of-towners. Great for pre-ball game brunch on a weekend.

I think (snarky comments and comebacks aside) that we're all pretty much in agreement. "Brunch" is a word that was invented to justify eating pancakes and eggs at 1:00pm on a Saturday, whereas breakfast is the same meal eaten before 10:00am Monday-Friday. Some places only do "weekend brunch." This might make them yuppie or it might not. Frankly, if their breakfast and coffee is good, I don't care how yuppie they are.

LOL, can you imagine going into Lois the Pie Queen and saying you want to order "brunch"? I'll admit to being too snarky for my own good!

Thanks for the feedback (and comebacks) CBRJ

Sheesh! You guys. No one has mentioned Sears on Powell Street, near Union Square for pancakes. They've been there forever, I believe across from the Sir Francis Drake Hotel?

Silvia's in Antioch on Lone Tree just off of Hwy 4. They recently reduced their menu from the multitude of omelettes, but if you remember the names they will still make them. Hash Browns or home fries in a quantity that most can't consume. The offer of biscuits & gravy instead of toast or other bread items should not be overlooked....ummmmm!

Ahh, I forgot you were out this way. Sylvia's is still very good i think, and lately I have been loving Black Bear in Oakley and sometimes Lumpy's in Antioch. Both of those are close to my store.

Sears Fine Foods is pretty good for pancakes - especially with kids. So is 'il Fornaio for breakfast - I think they only have it in the City location. Very good buckwheat pancakes. Oliveto cafe has a great breakfast pizza but not much else for breakfast.

Rudi's Can't Fail is good but I like it for breakfast during happy hour with $3 guinness (4-7). It is open until 1. Lois the Pie Queen is mediocre, except for the pork chops. The Montclair Egg shop is decent as an old school restaurant, but sometimes the wait there is too long. Fatapples is also OK - they should have been listed on the burger list as well - and has anyone started a pie list?

Of all the regular posters on this board, you were the only one that I thought might have been to Sylvia's. I've been to the Black Bear but not Lumpy's. Weekend breakfast at Sylia's and I'm good for the day! When I take my 6'-7" son he orders the Chuck Wagon (six of everything).

6'7"??? How many years of eligibility does he have left?

I'd make it to Sylvia's more often if it wasnt such a pain to get down Lone Tree now. I almost completely avoid that area now for quite a few reasons. On another note, we neeed to get one of the bars out here onto Cal's so all of us Antioch/Brentwood/Oakley/Knightsen/Disco Bay people have a place to congregate.

I don't think I've seen Judy's in the Marina mentioned, but it should be.

Go with a friend, one of you orders the Sourdough French Toast, the other orders the Potatoes Etc. (with Chicken Apple Sausage), and you share. Devine.

Take the by-pass road instead of Lone Tree and get off at "A" Street/Lone Tree way exit from Highway 4. I avoid that street now, too, when I can, although I'm coming from the opposite direction.

If you find any sort of decent sports bar out in east county, much less a Cal-oriented one, let me know. I remember a couple of fun restaurant/bars in Brentwood, but they seem to have gone out of business. Unfortunately, when I'm out that way, I seem to get questions like "what's the 'C' stand for?" when I wear my Cal baseball cap. I mean. jeez, what state are we in?

Go Bears!

68 do you live out in this area? The closest to a Cal bar we have out here i guess would be Tailgater's in brentwood. I've never had to ask them to switch it to a Cal game, its always on already. Plus they have a big cal bear claw fridge magnet on the north side of the bar. Does that count?

No -- I live in Pleasant Hill, but go out that way a lot on business. I saw Tailgaters in my search for sports bars out that way, but haven't been there.

Is the food good there? I was out there last week and was looking for a place to meet a business associate for lunch, but the two places I knew (one just south of "downtown" and one just north, both on Highway 4) were vacant, to my surprise.

I can't remember their names, for some reason. They both had funky names. Maybe you can refresh my memory, although it is moot now. Alas.

I'm guessing you were thinking of Pee Wee Muldoons in the south, as far as the north one goes...man i cant think of anything. I think tailgaters is good as far as bar food goes. And the waitresses are very pretty...well some of them are. Of course my bar experiences span a total of 3 strong years, so take that FWIW.

If your looking for a decent lunch place, may i suggest Schooners in Antioch off Lone Tree by Regal theaters? I like their food and they have their own beers there, too.
