I'm just curious. It seems like every Cal fan I encounter is also a 49er fan.

Grew up in L.A. rooted for the Rams until they moved to OC.

Somewhat rooted for both the Niners and Raiders when at Cal and later in L.A. all during the '80s. Was ****ed when the Niners passed up Rivera for Todd Shell. Was ****ed when the Niners kept telling Rodgers how much they liked him and then when he came out changing their minds in the final weeks and passing him over for Smith. Now I pretty much hate the Niners, though that could change. Living in the East Bay, potentially a Raider fan, but really, I am a Cal fan PERIOD. The teams I root for in the NFL? Packers, Seahawks and Eagles, but if the Cal players I root for on those teams left, I would root for their new team. I have decided I am a Cal fan PERIOD.

Same here... I had a smile on my face at the end of the game, as I proudly wore a Steelers shirt. Here's to the Sons of California!

I think the fact that L.A. doesn't have a professional football team (not counting USC) skews things. The majority of Cal students are from Southern California so they likely keep their childhood elegances and root for the Dodgers and Lakers, but with no football team in L.A., the Niners and to a lesser extent Raiders and Chargers predominate here.

ever since Rodgers got his first quality PT on the Packers (vs Dallas), I've been a Packer fan.

Not having a football team in LA only skews things for the young bears. Us "old" bears in our mid 30's who grew up in SoCal are mostly Raiders fans with a few random Ram fans sprinkled in. Age certainly plays a large role in allegiances in this case.

Oh, I see, so Cal is bigger than Jeff Tedford, but Joe Montana is bigger than the 49ers? Bit of a double standard there?

I hope you aren't one of the yahoos who wanted Steve Bono over Steve Young...

That's a relatively minor offense though, compared to their poaching Mariucci in 96 and inflicting the Holmoecost upon Cal. There has been a basic conflict of interest between the 9ers and Cal over the years. They've also consistently looked down on Cal talent, the Rodgers fiasco is the rule, not the exception.

I root against the 49ers, and against the Raiders too, because they have been extorting public funds. Al Davis is a leach and a creepy SOB.

My other NFL allegiances are entirely dependant on the number of Cal alums in their rosters. Right now it's the Packers, Seahawks and Eagles.

no double standard. I grew up a rams and raiders fan until they left and i stop rooting for them but I always loved montana. i never was a 49er fan really. i was a montana fan. i'm a packers fan now, but if they dump aaron i will root against them.
Ah, okay, that's fair enough then.

I am and remain a Niners fan (although the Nolan regime was a real low point, I hated Nolan from day one) but as long as AR is the Packers starting QB I will root for them against everybody but the Niners.

I didn't start paying attention to the NFL until my favorite players from Cal began matriculating into the league. Being a Bay Area native, I was all set to become a 49ers fan....the storyline was perfect. I loved Cal, loved Aaron Rodgers, 49ers had the first pick,...SURELY they would use the first pick to draft a favorite Golden Bear and galvanize my loyalties towards the Niners organization forever.

NOT!!!!!!!

The Niners broke my heart that draft day. Could never look at them the same way again. Since then, I've been in NFL purgatory, trying to find any reason to develop loyalties for a NFL team. Raiders were too hardcore for me.

Having lived in LA the past few years, talk earlier this season of a NFL team moving to LA gave me hope. However, the incredible play of AR this season got me interested in the Packers. I found myself rooting for AR/the Packers to get into the playoffs. Then found myself rooting for AR/the Packers in every playoff game. After the Packers beat the Chicago Bears, I was all-in emotionally. I wanted the Packers to win. I wanted AR to show what he could do on the biggest football stage in the world. I wanted him to win MVP, and I wanted everybody to do know he was a Cal Bear. And I got it!

I'd say, now I'm more a Packers fan than any other NFL team. Planning on getting a AR Fathead soon haha. If/when a NFL team does show up in LA though, I might have to split time between the Packers and them.

I think there are definitely more Niner fans ...probably makes it hard on them since they can't wear their red hats to games lol. NY GIANTS BABY! I was a kid growing up in Vacaville..went to kindergarten with George Martin's son (GM Jr.), he came to class....let us wear his Jersey and Helmet from his great Giants Teams...game over...lifelong G-man! My dad is a niner fan though..so those epic games in the 80s between the Giants/ Niners made our household fun lol. But yeah I root for Cal guys teams all the time. I even rooted for G-Bay over my Giants. Now..DeSean whippin my team...that one was tough lol.

I root for Cal players in the NFL and their teams. So my favorite teams are the Seahawks and the Packers. Even though I was a 49er and Raider fan growing up, I have zero interest in them now. Now if Boller starts (fat chance), I might become a Raider fan again.

Been a 49er fan for life. I was born in Oakland when the Raiders were in LA so my team was naturally the Niners. With Young, Waters, Hearst, Rice, Norton Jr, Hanks, Sanders, Jones and many others I have no regrets with my team. Niners passing up on Rogers was a bummer looking back on it, but at the time Smith seemed like an acceptable 1st pick imo. The niners are looking up though, and I think with Harbough doing his thing it should be fun to how things unfold in SF. Too bad Natron Means was out of shape in 94, or alot of you SD fans might have had a super ball win

Interesting take on things. I was 14 then, but I don't remember Natrone as the problem. Our O line in those years was pretty bad and led to Humphries' early retirement. The biggest strength of the team was the front 7 on D, although Young and Rice just shredded our secondary that game.

There was no way we realistically could have hung with the niners and all their stars: Young, Rice, Deion... Such a team would be impossible now, but could maybe happen again depending on how the players negotiations go.:hammer:

As an Los Angeles native, I belong to no NFL team except for those who have CAL players on them. Currently I'm a fan of:

Packers
Seahawks
Lions
Broncos
Browns

This will most def change the moment an LA team is announced.
