I read that thread too, and it's a noodle-scratcher.

It's true that we're coming off a down year and over the past few years we've fallen away from being the perennially-ranked power that we were in the middle of last decade. It also may be true that we could end up being only the 4th or even 5th best team they face this year. If we lose to them and then implode, it's entirely possible that we won't end up counting as a benefit to their strength of schedule.

But none of that changes the fact that this is probably going to end up being a lose-lose proposition from OUR point of view; the two aren't mutually exclusive. The unfortunate truth from our perspective is there's little realistic chance that Fresno St. is even in the upper HALF of teams we'll be facing this year. They have an outside shot at being the 7th-best but could end up being as low as 10th.

What sucks is that we all know they're gonna come out on fire and play us tough, but in the ongoing national battle for respect and recognition, no one's gonna care that we beat a WAC team--even its champion--they're only gonna care if we lose. The only way this game might end up benefiting us is if we win and then they manage to get and stay ranked. However if it's true that we're only the 4th or 5th best team they play, that's a pretty tall order with them rebuilding both lines and breaking in a new QB...

You can't throw two score games at halftime (Tennessee '07 and Nevada '10) in the same bucket as the USC and Furd debacles. Sometimes games get away from you in the second half. It's not good, but it happens for a variety of reasons. I don't excuse such games, but you can't even compare them with matches where the team hops onto the field with their hands cuffed to their ankles.

As another who was there watching in person, we were most definitely shell-shocked by the noise, Stevens getting knocked out, and the early big plays. The fact that it was still relatively close at halftime had more to do with offensive miscues and conservative play-calling on their part than with us suddenly finding our footing...

I was at that game also and have to give Tennessee fans credit - that place was loud and the stadium is so vertical that I can see how the players felt like the fans were on top of them.

And without making too much of an excuse because I think we were going to lose that game no matter what, didn't Tenn intercept our defensive play calls which enabled them to free up Meachem? I recall there being a credible story with an offensive coach at Tenn acknowledging that this was the case, although he obviously didn't attribute the win to this. Either way, if Syd doesn't have a broken arm, I think he tackles Meachem and it's a much closer game, but we had to wait until 2007 for a shot at redemption and got it in a major way.

Beachy......(sigh).... I live 4 mi. from the Fresno campus. Graduated there some time ago. But, still, with The Kid going to Cal, I've been and will continue to be FIRST...A Cal Fan. Even to the point of needling coworkers excited about going to the game to root on the 'Dogs. The so-called Red Wave (ugh).
But your supposed-to-be humorous quips (1,2) show you to have less of both. The last is just old. Really? You could do better.
Treat the fans and team with an ounce of respect. For the most part, they will you. I can tell both you and 76, this Fresno St. team may be young, will undoubtedly make mistakes, will probably lose....even big...(yeah!) but...
They won't come in thinking like an underdog. The believe they have the better QB, running back/s, kicker, receivers. Really they do! They will fight like Dogs for the full 60. IF.....we can disrupt young Mr. Carr (O-line a big question) it may be a nice fun Cal evening. If he has time....it won't be. Their Defense will, IMHO be so-so. Maynard will be the other key. And the question mark. A good game by our Newest Savior....lots of ToP...and it could be the laugher we all hope for.
The last meeting between these two schools was a long time ago. A lot has changed. A little respect Boys, might be in order.

If [U]a[/U] (a definite article meaning one) QB fumbles 2 times in the first half, he's probably benched. If he fumbles 3 times in a game, he's probably benched. That's a JT trademark: ball security is top priority.

Might I point out that all of this is the result of some off the cuff remarks by a guy who couldn't cut it at ucla and who was projecting the ucla attitude onto the Bears. This guy doesn't speak for the FSU team... so, yeah, I get the locker room hype angle here, but there really isn't much to his flapping.

FSU has basically replaced their entire OL so I hope we go after Carr like he stole the last dollar from someone's momma AND tore her one best dress...make Carr ineffective and the game IS over. I bet they try to bubble screen us like crazy to test our new LB crew, keep our rush in check, and dare our smaller CBs to press and tackle well.

I think Fresno is going to take a page out of USC's playbook with a lot of rolling playaction passes to move the pocket and launch point of the QB..and I think the game will be decided on if we have learned our lesson from last season.

+1. This defense should pour through that line.

But that's never really been the issue with us. Our teams have talent. The problem has, in the past 3 years, been what we do with that talent.

The question has also been heart. Going on the road and knowing the game is over for us in the first 10 minutes is not something that is going to go over with fans very well this year.

I can only hope that we will come out strong and look to end the game early. Blitz this kid up the middle and on the corners and make him afraid to drop back. On offense, start short passes up the middle followed by a healthy dose of running to roll the clock. Then launch some 20+ yard throws along the sideline.

Do not give this team hope. I live in Fresno. The Bulldogs always try to rise up to and surpass their opponents' enthusiasm level. No question, their heads will be in this game.

We have the talent. They have the chip on their shoulder. Give them hope - and it could be trouble. We need to stomp on them early.

I'll admit my last experience with them was the visit to Frestucky and encountering the most vile group of people I've ever met at a sporting event, and that includes Raiders games in LA and Oaktown. So my expectations are for more of the same loser behavior. If they surprise everyone and show even USC-level class, I'll be flat-out shocked. So the bar for "exceeding expectations" couldn't be lower.

We'll see if they can do it, I'm not holding my breath. From what I saw in Fresneck you'd need 50,000 labotomies to get that group of fans up to the level of only being "annoying." I know it's been a long time, but I'm still upset we're scheduling them and I hope we give them a serious beat-down.
