This game isn't on Maynard, it's on Coach Tedford for trying to run with Sofele on goal line. After CJ had been successful on ever single goal line situation so far this year. Why, why, why. Sofele is a D2 player, not a d1 guy.

Sofele: 17 carries 98 yards
Anderson: 7 carries 9 yards

Sofele had a great game, and you are a dipshit.

And it's not his fault the coaches didn't put in CJA on 1st down.

Dipshit? Really? personal attacks show your level of maturity. I don't what game you were watching? Obviously not Cal vs. Washington. Sofele is a d2 athlete. He has no business seeing the field on this level unless it's on special teams.

Good teams -- and good coaches -- score in the red zone. Our play calling and offensive composure with first down at the two was so bad it was comical. Classic Tedfurd.

Can't say we didn't have our chances to win this game. 3 field goals from close range on top of that last series at the goal line.

You throw it to allen or Jones on 3 straight plays

I say, roll out and give Maynard the option to throw it to Allen/Jones or run it in. Make the defense defend all possibilities.

You realize Sofele had more yards, better YPC than all the runningbacks in the game? By almost a factor of 2? This includes the NFL-bound Polk?

Sofele played well, but he was not used well on that last sequence. At best, he should get one carry on a sweep. Not twice into the middle.

Also, not even trying one play-action rollout is a total Fail.

That said, I'm actually not that mad about it. The team showed heart and fought to the end. That alone is better than last year's team.

Completely agree. JT and company should know we aren't a 4-yards-up-the-gut kind of team by now.

I like how this team fights on the road. Something to look forward to when we go down to Pasadena and out to Tempe... and maybe Eugene??

Tough loss going into the bye week... freakin' U Dub...

How can you say that when he averaged nearly 6 yards per carry?

Elpbear, obviously you're a personal friend or parent of Sofele. I don't know who you are, and frankly I don't care. I would highly recommend staying off the board if you're going to resort to personal attacks.

Sofele played very well outside of the dropped 4th down pass... but when you have 4 downs to get 2 yards. Isi is NOT our running back for that situation. CJ Anderson just doesn't lose yardage. He would have gotten 2 yards on the 4 carries. There are times in which you can't shake & bake and one of those is when there are 11 defensive players trying to stop you from getting 2 yards.

Absolutely fcking ridiculous play calling.

2 plays to your midget running back with CJA and CDJ on the bench followed by a low percentage fade pass.

Worst goal line play calling since Riley lost his game of smear the queer v. OSU.

Granted it was not a blowout, but this was only the Huskies.

The "same old Cal" comment applies to Cal managing to come up a day late and a dollar short, yet again. Tell me you don't have that familiar feeling in the pit of your stomach. Others will no doubt comment on it, but you can expect some glib "We put on a good effort, and but for a play here and there, we would have won. We've got to work a little harder, yada, yada, yada" comments from JT after the game, when it looks to me like we have a LONG ways to go, particularly on defense and special teams. It could get ugly in the next couple of weeks unless things turn around quickly. (Don't we have any safeties? If so, where the hell are they?)

There WERE a few GOOD things to take away from the game:

1. Maynard generally looked pretty good. The Husky pass defense sucks, but 300+ yards passing is 300+ yards passing. (I never thought I'd be asking this question, but why doesn't he scramble more?)

2. Allen and Jones looked good.

3. The OL looked better than I have seen them in a long time.

4. Tavecchio looked good. You have to give it to him. He looked good today.

CJA did not show the burst and toughness he had the previous games and it showed in his YPC. The Oline didn't get much push on the Dline either on those running plays.

Our D stepped up a couple times when we needed but they have not played what we've expected out of the unit this yr.

I keep saying, nothing against ISI, but he isn't being put in a situation to succeed by Tedford with that kind of playcalling. Isi has great heart and a good player but you CANNOT run him up the middle continuously like we do.

CTP - You think Sofele is only a D-2 athlete...... Seriously???? If you actually believe that then maybe you aren't the best judge of talent. Sofele was FINE. Some of the situations in which he was asked to perform were just dumb.

They're not a bad team. Obviously their QB has something. Also, it was a tough road environment, the kind where lesser teams will fold.

Actually, I don't. But then again, I didn't think this team was going to be a serious contender for a title, so a close road loss doesn't kill me. What would have killed me is if we had simply been uncompetitive in the second half or something (or for the whole game). That didn't happen.

I don't blame anyone else for feeling down after a loss (any loss), but as losses go, this wasn't so bad.

Well at least Tedford saved some great goal line play calls for later in the year. Play action with CJA and a pass to Miller. Roll out Maynard, etc., etc. Let's hope Tedford can find them in his playbook because that was a pathetic display.

It was the same way with Riley. He used to be kind of a scrambler, and we saw less and less of that over the years (boneheaded run against OSU notwithstanding).

You're out of line because Sofele played a good game (on the whole) and you're saying he doesn't even belong on the roster. That's a d*** thing to say.

Total team loss. It's easy to go down to the end, and say it was just the coaches or it was Maynard, or Sofele. The reality was, we couldn't convert in the red zone when it mattered. We kicked 3 field goals, when we should have had at least two touchdowns, and then we damn near win outright, maybe we kick a field goal to win the game.

But what I like, is that through all the mistakes, bad calls by coaches, **** poor roughing the quarterback call to set up Polks 70 yard TD, being in a hostile environment, etc. the team fought the whole way. This had the makings of an EGG. 40 point route of yore. We damn near pulled it out. I like this team. Now we'll see if we have the same fight against SC.

The Allen catch at the 2 should've been a touchdown if Maynard threw it more accurately. The Jones pass interference throw was on the money. Overall still impressed by Maynard.

Agree with d.o. throw it 4 times at Allen from the 2. If they double team him, go to Jones or run the ball.

He does damage outside. Running him up the gut every first down and in goal line situations is just not smart.

(One of the few plays with CJ was a pitch outside! And he got run down.)

We really need to run more play-action on first down. We run all the time, four games now. Sofele behind our line and Will Kapp with everyone knowing we are running is a waste of a play and puts us into too many third and longs. Maynard has been amazing at converting them, but I'd rather see him throwing deep to Jones/Allen behind the safeties (or to TEs) off play-action.

And Vereen, and Forsett, and even JJ Arrington. They were all smallish backs but none as TINY as Isi. They all bring a few other things to the table too, with Best's speed, Vereen's wiggle, Forsett's quick hit to the hole, and JJ's toughness.

It is clearly a mistake to use Isi like the back above.

Yeah, I guess you could say Allen looked "good." 10 catches for 198 yards and the longest pass reception TD in Cal football history. Just another day at the office...

If you review my previous posts, I've been one of the few to defend Isi. I'm sorry, maybe I'm not the best judge of character, or maybe I am. It's irrelevant at this point. He's just not the caliber running back that should be leading a d1 backfield. Just my .02
