If it's an academic issue, then I'm not certain how much can be made "public" by Cal, other than "he didn't meet the NCAA standard". It's hard to understand as ZM had a year of adjustment to Cal - and advisors to make the Fall semester less stressful. I was under the impression that football players tried for an "easier" Fall semester and took the harder stuff in the spring, because of time commitments. ZM could make it - he'd had a whole academic year under his belt and was eligible for Fall 2011. Wild wild speculation - maybe he took "incompletes" so what happens if he finishes up the incompletes quickly?

Without knowing the facts and keeping it at face value, I would say that not living up to an academic responsibility is not an injury and the player MUST earn it back. In my book, being suspended for lack of academic progress shows a lack of responsibility and that player has let the team down.

San </b><br /><br /><b>Kline, a Cal commit, has been by far the top quarterback on either team during the first three practice sessions. We feel like he has the strongest arm, the most compact release and continues to fit the ball well into tight spaces. On Tuesday, he showed the ability to keep a play alive with his feet, making an accurate throw rolling right to the sidelines. Kline is a quarterback that doesn’t have to have his feet set and balanced up perfectly to make throws. </b><br /><br /><br />2- Tanner Mangum, Eagle (Idaho)<br /><br />Mangum has looked best in the intermediate passing game. He changes ball speeds well and does a good job of picking up blitzes and finding hot routes. The BYU commit does not spin the ball as well as the other quarterbacks on his team, but still has a high skill level in other areas. <br /><br /><br />3- Jameis Winston, Hueytown (Ala.)<br /><br />While we expect him to be much better in a game setting than a practice setting, the Florida State commit has struggled with consistency all three days. He’s been erratic in the passing game and this setting does not lend itself to him making big plays with his feet<br /><br /><br /><b>While Winston was balls out in the game...both CAL and FSU have future star QB's in their future.<br /><br /><br />I'm loving all the BE...OTCHes (USC, Oregon, Washington, UCLA even ASU) bitching about CAL being a team with no future.<br /><br />CAL is a good QB away from being a contender and a Great QB away from winning a BCS game.<br /><br />Beginning in 2013 ... CAL's "D" will outscore some PAC 10 teams "O".<br /><br />It may take a year or two...but CAL will be waxing USC and Oregon... and the rest of the PAC.</b><hr></blockquote><br /><br />Excellent take on the situation. There are obviously a lot of complexities to this issue beyond the recruiting front, but I like the positive attitude. And I think it's correct.

I wouldn't be surprised if this is an academic issue given Maynard's past. <br /><br />Hopefully Maynard can prioritize things and focus entirely on his education at this point, it would be a shame to leave Cal empty handed.

Weighing in on the "lets wait till there is an announcement" side of things.<br /><br />And anyone that thinks that passing 3 classes with the amount of time these kids put into entertaining US is "easy" simply is kidding themselves. They are asked to put in a 50-70 hour "work week". Part and parcel of the backa** priorities of the NCAA when it comes to revenue sports. <br /><br />FAR better for the kids would be to reduce load to a minimum in the fall and make up in Spring and Summer but THAT would be more expensive for the institutions - since Summer school is run to be a revenue positive at many member institutions and skewing toward athletes would be a money loser.

Give Kline the rock. Let's get this new era started.
