I'm guessing during your time and mine we were in quarters. i think 1969-73..approx $150/QTR..so $89/qtr could be right.

2009-2013 - ~10,000 per semester

I started at Cal in 1962 and graduated in 1968 with a Bachelor of Architecture, a five year program. I seem to remember we were still on a semester cycle in '62 and the tuition was $98/semester.

I worked as a dishwasher in Smyth (sp?) Hall to help pay my tuition, and then worked at a second job doing take-offs for glazing contractors working through the Contractor's Exchange in Oakland. I believe I got through the whole year for around $2800 including room, board and tuition. I spent my summers surfing with friends in Hawaii.

I think it was October 1962 that we saw The Beatles at Candlestick Park. It might have been '63. They performed for only 45 minutes as I recall. I only went because my friends dragged me along. I had no idea who The Beatles were. They set up and performed on the pitcher's mound. I think the tickets were $5.

I recall seeing Jemmi Hendrix at the Greek Theater in the fall of 1963 (might have been '64). He opened for some other group that we were there to see. Like The Beatles, my friends and I were not that familiar with Hendrix and who he was. He stood out with his white/bright sequined outfit and his left-handed guitar. We thought he was weird, but surprisingly good. The clouds of smoke were so thick we could hardly see him. Ah, but what did we care? Life was simple and straightforward.

Those were the days.

1987-1992 $1,800-$2,000? Not sure though, you would have to ask a guy named Mr. liverflukes to be certain. (Don't ask him what I did with that extra year.) I do recall that rents in Berkeley during that time ranged from $400-$1,000 unless you were talking the towers in Emeryville or a pad in the City. I don't remember the dorm price housing but Co-ops were $400-$600 per month and so were fraternities. Nice housing with a group of friends could be found in South or North Berkeley for $400-$700 per month.

For additional reference, A Top Dog and drink was $2.50. Blondies, La Vals and Fat Slice all had a Pizza and Drink Special for $2.50 or $1.75 for just the slice. Black Lightning lecture notes were $18.00 per semester. A concert at the Concord Pavillion was $16.50 and a ticket to a game at UCLA in 1989 cost $18.00. Somehow, I got in free for all the shows at the Greek-so say my ticket stubs. Gigantic cups of beer could be had at the Bears Lair for $2.50. It's funny that I remember what [U]I[/U] had to pay for...

I graduated in '09. I think my tuition was $8500 my last year. I just missed that 30% increase that my sister walked into.

The Beatles first stepped foot in America in February 1964.

They only played in the Bay Area 3 times -- in August 1964 (Cow Palace), August 1965 (Cow Palace) and their final concert in August 1966 at Candlestick.

Before 1966, Hendrix was a contributor to other music groups.

He didn't form his own touring band until 1966.

1996-2000 was around $1600 per semester, so 3200 for the year. Health insurance was $800 for the year, now I'd imagine that would be closer to $2500/year

I don't think there was tuition as such when I started (1954). There was a small ($15-$35 ??) "registration" fee per semester that covered processing and things like lab breakage, student health etc. That charge rose over the years but was never more than $50-$75 or so. The athletic privilege card was another $10-$12 and covered entry to most events except the Big Game (FB). When the new student union building was built, student body membership became mandatory, another $15 or so. Somehow, the figure $135 sticks in my mind as the most I ever paid in a semester to attend and it always consisted of fees and/or card privileges, not "tuition".

Yes. In 1978, it went up to $262.50 when students agreed to an additional $50 assessment to built the Recreational Sports Facility even though it wouldn't be completed during their time.

Two-bedroom apartments in the Southside in the late '70's were in the low-to-mid $300's.

1969 - 1973
Started at $100 plus fees
Ended at about $200 plus fees

It was about $50 when I entered, but my last year was about the $89..

Not sure on tuition, tho by looking around here im thinking under 10k. I do know that pops said it was around 25k a year for everything. Oh, graduated a couple years ago.

1959-63 semesters.

$28.50 is what I recall per semester.
There may have been a couple other fees, but it wasn't much.

This does not include books, gas, bus fare, food (brought my lunch...a bunch of us commuter students sat on the Campanile stairs everyday and ate lunch).
10 cents green/tossed salad in dining hall for dinner (dining hall is now Cesar Chavez Tutoring center)....

All day free parking just past Dwight...

You're right. It was called a registration fee rather than tuition. Two buddies and I rented a 3 bedroom apartment on Channing Way between Fulton and Ellsworth for $90/month or $30 each. Parking was an additional $5/month. We had no idea that we had it so good back then. Cal football s*cked in the 60's. But the demonstrations were exciting and fun.

You know what they say, okaydo...if you remember the 60s, you weren't really there.

1959-1962.. Oakbear is right. No tuition, but a registration fee of $89 or $99 that covered everything, including entrance to all FB and BB games. Student health card might have been an additional $15 or so. A year, living at Bowles would total about $1700. working in the summer in canneries in Sunnyvale and hashing at Bowles/Smythe would cover it. The big kicker was the first year's dental "kit" in 1963 that was $700.00. Believe it or not, and compare the numbers, that was big then.

Now if you think those were the days, wrong. We weekly lost in FB by 00-55 like scores. Ouch--post Pappy.

From 1984-1988 there was a freeze on fees. I think it was $475 a semester

You are close. The "fees" were $120 per year in the Fall of 1963 when I entered as a freshman. I remember it well because that was about what I made working in a Kaiser Aluminum plant in the summer after high school. When I left Cal, the yearly "fees" at Boalt Hall were either $300 or $600 per year. One of my classmates found a Boalt receipt or check and it was for $300 in 1970-71 and I can't remember if that was for each semester or for the year.
Even to this old conservative, the fees now charged are obscene. No one can do it on their own, as many of us did (being totally self-supporting) by working during the school year and full-time in the summer. It was tough, surviving the 60s after the FSM when no one would sent their sweet young daughter to Cal, the Vietnam War was in full swing, and the campus craziness was in full flower. But, in those days, men were real men.

I believe it was $198.50 per quarter when I started and $212.50 when I finished 4 and 1/2 years later. Early Seventies. All paid by friends who lacked poker skills.

Late '70s - early '80s $750.00 per Quarter

Tuition went down from $212.50 to $212.25 after my first quarter and then never changed after that. Times were sure different.

I was there '78-82 and it was $228 a quarter.. I think Cal switched to semesters a year or two after I finished? And Blondies was $1.50 for a slice and drink and I think Manuel's Burritos charged 99 cents for a pitcher and a plate of beans and chips. :-)

1992-1995: Tuition and fees ~$4000/yr. And since I couldn't establish residency (international student), add another $12K-$14K per year

I enrolled as a Freshman in 1961 and did a dishwashing stint at Smythe (I think that's the correct spelling, but yours could be correct) in the Fall of 1962. Stayed at that for a bit, then moved on to other opportunities. Who knows, maybe you took my vacated spot. During our time at Cal we were participants in and/or eyewitness to a remarkable transition in campus culture. I have always since felt fortunate to have that as a part of my life's experience.

Correct. Cal's last year on the quarter system was 1982-83. It switched to the semester system for the 1983-84 school year.

I recall the reg fees being about $800/year when I started in 1982, and going up to about $1,000/year in my sophomore or junior year. I remember there were protests about that increase.

did not start at Cal until the 90's. Previously, there were fees that were not used for academics. When I enrolled in '64, the fee was $87.50/semester, which covered: registration, Cowell Student Health, athletic card (free admission to basketball, $10/year for football), and Daily Cal. It rose to $62.50/quarter when they changed to the quarter system in 1966.

From 1961 through 1966, I paid my own tuition from summer job earnings. I believe it was $96 per semester.

In ~2000, I believe it was roughly ~$3K per semester for all costs I.e. tuition, health issuance, fees, etc...

Exactly what i remember Laf when I was there. Ah yes, The Come Bak Inn. Beer and Darts... And sorority girls.

I have heard that the State Constitution prohibits the UC system from charging "tuition," and so crafty administrators just called it something else ("fees").

I don't remember exactly what I paid (graduated Dec. 2004), but I remember being very glad that I finished when I did.

No one can do it on their own. Previous generations subsidized you and me. Now, we say to the young: "Screw you! You're on your own." Don't be surprised when at some point in the future these generations gut programs for seniors, saying: "Screw you! You're on your own." It will be no more than we deserve...
