I thought we had a "crappy" high school system.

Quote:

The recruiter from Maryville University, a private school in St. Louis, touted the $5,000 scholarship automatically granted to Californians. The University of Arizona recruiter mentioned that Los Angeles is only an hour's flight away, and the recruiter from Southern Methodist University in Dallas mentioned the In-N-Out Burger a mile from campus, which drew "oohs" from the students.

You get 5k just for being from Cali?

Kendall Williams, a senior at Mayfair, had his heart set on attending Cal Poly San Luis Obispo next fall. He and nearly 37,000 others applied.

With good grades and an interest in science, the school seemed to be a perfect fit. He was rejected. Just 11,533 made the cut. "I was really shocked," he said. "I really didn't think I wouldn't get accepted."

He soon began receiving emails from Northern Arizona University, asking him to apply. His friends encouraged him look at Arizona State University as well.
Can't get into Cal Poly= auto admission to ASU and NAU?

I mean, are Cali HS students that good? What makes these out of state colleges want them so much?

Most public schools (including California schools) charge significantly higher rates for out of state students.

Schools outside of California know that they are competing with much lower cost public schools in California (yes, they are still relatively inexpensive) for California students. So if they want them they have to offer incentives relative to other out of state students.

They still make more money on out of state students than in state, so they can subsidize
the cost of education to their in state kids and provide a better education to them.

This is a generalization, but applies pretty broadly. My son was offered pretty significant scholarships to U. Oregon, U Colorado, etc to compete with UC schools. He is now a junior at Berkeley.

The better and desirably located public CA schools are overwhelmed with applications, and if anything have been reducing enrollment (other than Davis) to address budget cuts. That leaves a lot of very qualified students with the choice of going to UC Riverside (in SoCal) or UC Merced (NorCal), or if not UC eligible, an undesired state college. All of a sudden, the U of Michigans of the world, which are surviving off out of state tuition students and dropping standards for out of state students, are looking real good. I might add the comment about CA high schools being crappy really varies on an area by area basis.

There aren't enough of them. ASU has 73,000 students-largest in US

So they do open up the pocket book. I've been wondering why California kids have been heading to Oregon and Colorado in droves.

And they're asserting that they have smaller classes?

Yes, the California high school system produces phenomenal students that elite academic institutions throughout the desert southwest and Oregon eagerly poach from our beloved state after said students are rejected by the likes of Cal State Northridge and UC Merced. The cash-rich Lobos are taking the cream of the California crop.

$$$, especially in more affluent areas in California. You don't see UW, Oregon, and Colorado sending their admissions people to Bakersfield or Stockton. These schools see:

1. Qualified students who attend excellent high schools. These are types of students that will be well prepared for college and likely won't struggle academically when they get there.
2. Kids who can pay the sticker price

I got some pretty decent scholarship offers from UW and Oregon. Colorado wanted me to pay sticker price (**** that). I had the option of attending a few different UC's (UCI, UCD, Santa Cruz) but preferred to leave the state.

In state admissions to the best Cali schools are extremely difficult these days for those of us with children who are ready to go to college. Our daughter ended up @ Kansas for a variety of reasons, one of which was solid academics and a reasonable out of state tuition. Our son, who bleeds blue and gold in everything he does, is very sad to know that he won't get a sniff from Cal so he is looking at UO and their honors college and UW which is his grandmothers alma mater - and also a very good school. He is also considering Santa Clara which offers scholarships to qualified candidates to lower the tuition cost to the equivalient of the UC system. All are great schools and we will be proud wherever he ends up. The current environment is just impossible for most high achieving, academically solid kids these days when it comes to gaining admittence to Cal etc...

Well, I could tell you were being ironic (or quoting "pundits", or something) when you said that CA high schools were supposed to be crappy, but, for the record, they are largely "pretty good, though in a current state of decline due to lack of funding and societal support".

The answer to the question, though, as described by others on this thread, is that California high school graduates are PLENTIFUL, as we are the largest state, and that's why they are being recruited by other states. The fact that our public universities are becoming more and more expensive also makes CA students more willing than usual to consider going elsewhere.

Probably because only 10% show up on a given day.

As dumb as our average students may be getting, the sheer number of students means that we still have the highest amount of smart kids. Schools in the Bay Area like Lynnbrook, Mission, Gunn, Paly, Saratoga, Cupertino, Monte Vista, Lowell, etc. are basically the DLS or LBP of the academia world.

I seem to recall that the UC system as a whole was supposed to accommodate the top 10% of California HS students. I suspect the actual spaces are less than that. Any idea what the % is in reality?

No, of course not. At least 90% of all HS grads in the country, California included, are pretty worthless academically and destined for illustrious careers in marketing and sales.

Except for the upper echelon schools, all institutions are hurting for money and the best way for them to get money is through tuition, and if California has too many students for its schools, then other out of State colleges will be happy to take up the rejects. The only other source for smaller schools without much national drawing power is international, and probably not too many Chinese or Indian students have heard of, of would be willing to pay tuition for, places like SMU or ASU.
