Before I married my husband, I informed him that one of my big goals in life was to be one of those little old ladies being wheeled out onto the 50 yard line at the Big Game attending my 50+ consecutive Big Game, and that I would never be available for any event that was on the same day. This year will be my 24th consecutive game, and so far, so good. He went to Pomona, so he doesn't understand my Cal football obsession, but he goes along with it. Getting the ESP seats helped--he doesn't want to "waste" the money by not attending...

I really don't get the dilemma. Has no one here heard of the Slingbox? That came out like five years ago, yet people are still complaining about having to miss a game.

Slingbox is no substitute for seeing a game in CMS. Slingbox works for away games but not for missing home games.

This reminds me of a hypothetical I was kicking around with friends. What one would do if your significant other's mother died and the funeral was scheduled during Cal's first trip to the Rose Bowl since the 50s.

Scalp her ticket and split the proceeds with your loved one?

Yep, marrying a fellow alum yields many benefits.

You should go to the wedding. There'll be other Big Games.

I feel your pain. I dj weddings as a side gig and of course people want to get married in September and October. I'll be djing on that day so hopefully the game is an early start time, like 12 or 12:30. The late start time like last year will kill me. Sucks that you can't make it to CMS to watch the game but hey, visit first row sports dot eu. Someone will be making it available to all of those on the go.

It's even worse when the couple getting married are both Cal alum - that's what I have to deal with this year. Actually, I had to miss the Big Game last year for their engagement party. Got annoyed with them and told them they better not make me miss it again for their wedding...so they scheduled their wedding on the day of the Oregon game. Great. :headbang

I missed the Cal vs Fresno State opener last year but Slingboxed the whole game in the car. It wasn't the same experience as being at the game but boy it's an upgrade over checking the scores on every 2 minutes on my phone.

All great suggestions.

More background. My real disappointment is not being in CMS to watch the game. The wedding will probably take place in East Hampton, where the couple lives. So, getting together with fellow Bears in NYC is not in the cards. The best I could hope for is a great big plasma TV. These guys, they are gay, ("not there is anything wrong with that...")have been together for about 20 years and they are very good friends of my wife. I like them too. Really good guys.

I think I'm going to see how the season is progressing. If we win a few games where we're the underdog, I'm staying home. If it's going to be 7-5, I'm flying to NY.

If I run into any of you at CMS before October 20 and you meet my wife, please put in a good word for me and ask how she can possibly suggest I miss the Big Game. I need all the help I can get.

So this gay marriage is ruining your own marriage.

Interesting.

Been dating/shacked up/married twelve years and there have been zero discussions/conflicts about attending football games home AND away plus bowl games and home basketball games because I explained what my priorities were from day one. The other 330 days of the year - have at it.
I have missed zero weddings/birthdays/family events OR games because there are no conflicts.

I admit to being an idiot when it comes to technology. Can you please explain this Slingbox thing to me?

I am going to be living in Switzerland all of next year. And with the 9 hour time difference, it is hard to watch all the games online. Would slingbox allow someone to save them until after a wedding (or when they wake up the next day)?

Thanks!

Go to the wedding, that's about life and things that matter. This is just football.

This appears not to be about a wedding. That appears to be the field of play.

This sounds more like a power struggle. Or, wealth envy (sorry, but I don't know if you are). East Hampton? People there are extremely well off and this may be a chance to spend a day or two in some really rare atmosphere and see some really cool homes.

Just guessing, really. Shouldn't do that, I know.

If it were just 6bear6, knowing these guys to the extent that he does, would he go to the wedding himself, alone?

Well, the catch is that it all depends on what kind of TV package you have with your cable/satellite provider. Assuming you have a DVR, it would be very simple. You hook the Slingbox up to the DVR and hook it up to your internet, and pretty much wherever you have internet, you have access to your own TV including the DVR function. You can access your Slingbox through any computer, or if you pay for the app, you can get it on your mobile phone or iPad. I sprung for the iPad app, and I think it's worth it.

Assuming you won't have your own cable/satellite package here, maybe you could hook up the Slingbox at your parents or friend's house if they'll let you. The downside to that is you watching the Slingbox could interfere with the person who's at home watching because whatever you watch through the Slingbox, they watch and vice versa.

Of course it isn't. In fact, Slingbox is not the same as watching it on a 50 inch plasma either, but the point is that it provides you with the ability of catching the game wherever you go. And honestly, I think going to games is a bit overrated.

In the immortal words of John McEnroe, "You can't be serious?"

After we went through a year and one half of tree sitting, COB's opposition, the Panoramic Hill Gang and now Barsky, you say it's overrated to go to CMS to see a game. Unbelievable!!!

Tedhead, please reconsider that statement.

To be perfectly honest this seems like a bit of a control struggle over who really has the upper hand in your marriage. The East Hamptons is like Napa + Lake Como, really posh and luxurious. I think part of the allure of going to this wedding (for your wife) is not just for the benefit of your mutual friends but as someone noted due to the sheer ritziness of the destination.

Brace yourself, it's going to be an expensive trip, especially if she likes shopping. What is in it for you?

Misery loves company 6bear6. I have it a bit worse than you because my wife's sister is getting married on October 20th and we're both in the wedding. Thus, apparently, we HAVE to go. To make matters worse, a good friend of hers is getting married on November 10th (the Oregon game) and apparently we have to go to that as well.

First off - who are these people that get married during football season? I have a standing proclamation with all of my friends. If you are doing anything important during football season do not expect me to attend - Cal Football is more important than you. That rule, however, does not seem to apply to my wife's family or friends. Complete cr@p.

As you can tell, I have not yet made peace with the fact that I'll be missing Big Game for the first time in 15 years.

HAHA, if I remember correctly Oskiblue42, you had your wedding the same day as the NCAA tournament. While Cal did not make it that far, you had no way of knowing that beforehand. BTW, we missed most of your wedding while at the bar watching the other bball games. maybe you missing the big game is retribution.

Me on the other hand, has his wedding in May while there are no sporting events going on at all. To top it off, I have my wedding at lawrence hall of science, with cal band and top dog, thanks to my awesome wife.

whose house? run's house.
