I hope they keep that rule. I hate games that drag on and on when you have BART to catch. Just eliminate it during the playoffs. Don't waste bullpen arms for 18 inning games during the regular season.

Dodgers and Padres played a 16 inning game under this new rule so it doesn't prevent long games. It just makes for a weird new game after 9 innings that is something like baseball, but not baseball.

I hate it almost as much I hate ending soccer games with penalty kicks.

This will be the last year for the rule. The Commissioner has already stated that the rule was temporary and will not be extended.

I watched the last few innings of that game. That was not pretty baseball to watch. Also, I would say long games under this rule are anomalies.

New rules can improve the aesthetics of the game. If the old September roster rules existed and there were no 3 hitter minimums for pitchers, they might still be playing, except it'd only be the 13th inning at almost 5 hours.

Safe! Credit the catcher, Buster Posey for busting his ass on an infield grounder in the 11th inning. Giants win.
The difference between a right wing conspiracy and the truth is about 20 months.

I love this Giants team.

Curious and earnest question: do Dodgers fans love the current squad? I don't have a good read on the fan base.

Both teams have a passionate fan base. The beauty of the rivalry is that it continued unabated following the move west in 1958. It is now well over a century old. I can think of only two other rivalries in American professional sports that are as passionate and neither dates to the 19th C. (Yankees/Red Sox and Packers/Bears).

You misunderstand my question. Each season your team is different. This particular Giants team is both surprisingly good (though I thought they'd be better than most people figured, I did not think they'd be this good) and very likable - a core of guys we've had for a decade or more and then a lot of likable guys filling in the gaps. The team seems to like each other. The manager makes the right decisions and has the respect of the team. It's just very good vibes all around. So I like *this* Giants team more than most Giants teams.

I'm wondering if Dodger fans feel the same way. On Twitter (and on here) I sense a lot of discontent.

Lots of frustration with injuries (now one of the most consistent hitters in Pollock) and some really subpar play from guys who should be much better (Bellinger) combined with the disappointment that is Trevor Bauer have made this a difficult season.

However, overall this core group of Dodgers is pretty likeable and having success despite the setbacks.

Outside of Bauer, they are a likeable group. Yes, lots of injuries. Most smart fans realize that Bellinger needs a season to come back from a bad shoulder injury and get his power back, especially catching up to high pitches.

I thought about that one but they only play against each other twice a year (out of 82). A long term rivalry requires more interaction..

The Bauer signing made no sense. He has a long history of being a difficult personality. Up until that signing, current ownership was focused on building a team of guys like Kershaw - solid guys who are team players. Why they added a pain in the ass to the mix tells me that hubris may be lurking in the owners' suite.

As for injuries, SF has experienced a bunch as well. However, an older team is always subject to that problem so it can't be a surprise to anyone.

If Bellinger continues to play like this he should be benched. He is basically an automatic out. He has a .550 OPS and a 49 OPS+.

He can't hit a fastball. His BA is .167!

If he's hurt shut him down and bring him back healthy next year. He's hurting the team right now. Problem is, his defense is still pretty good so Roberts keeps playing him.

As for injuries? Seriously? The only team to lose more days to the IR is the Mets. The Giants are in the middle of the pack. Perhaps the law of averages will catch up to the Giants and they will lose half their team for the next three weeks.

Giants are killing it but I'd take Scherzer over Bryant, at least for a WS run. I trust Farhan but I think Giants pitching will do them in.

You sure about the Mets being the only team with more days lost to injury than the Dodgers?

According to the Man-Games Lost website (mangameslost.com), as of last Wednesday:

From Wednesday 9/8, MLB top 5, games missed by injured players and IL

SDP 2025
NYM 2002
TOR 1875
TBR 1810
LAD 1684

The Dodgers haven't had enough time to move ahead of the Rays since then, so they can't be in any better than 5th place.

But isn't it more important to look at the significance of the players lost? I mean, 300 days lost by your two worst relievers and your worst bench player doesn't mean as much as 200 days lost by your two best starters and your most important position player. Number of days lost to injury can be a very misleading stat if we're trying to look at who has been most impacted by injury.

So let's look at the Lost-WAR metric. In that case, the Dodgers don't crack the top 5, the Giants do. Sure, the Dodgers have lost more days, but the Giant have been more impacted:

From Wednesday 9/8, MLB top 5, impact on teams from injured players and IL (Lost-WAR metric)

1 CHW 19.57 WAR lost
2 NYM 14.90
3 TOR 12.58
4 SFG 12.26
5 MIA 10.27

I'm not sure how the Dodgers have ended up with such lousy hitting in the second half, they have so much more talent than the Giants, there is no excuse for how they've been doing offensively lately. The Scherzer acquisition makes the Dodgers' top 3 starting rotation stronger, in theory making them stronger than the Giants for a deep post-season run.

On the other hand, the Brewers also have a really strong top three of the rotation for the post-season. The Dodgers are built as a World Series championship or bust team, the Scherzer-Turner trade only reinforced that. If I'm the Dodgers, I'm more worried about the Brewers causing the season to be a bust than I am the Giants, because a) they have a top three of the starting rotation to match the Dodgers, b) as much as I don't like Hader, I have way more faith in him than Jansen (or McGee of the Giants, for that matter), and c) the Brewers are better offensively than the Dodgers. Anything can happen in post-season, but make me choose a favorite to win the NL pennant right now, and it's the Brewers.

If either the Dodgers win it all or they resign him, yes.
Otherwise, I think they gave up too much to acquire him.

I read a stat which said that over every 10 game stretch of the season. - no matter where you start the 10 games - there has only been one stretch where the Giants were under .500 and they went 4-6 in that stretch. That is remarkably consistent. They are having an incredible and very unexpected season.

TBH, Dodgers would be tied with the Giants right now if not for Buehler's meltdowns.

He hasn't gotten out of the 4th inning in 2 of his last 4 starts and one of the others wasn't superb by his standards, either.

If pigs had wings, they would fly.

After over 150 games, both teams could pick out a dozen where they lost inexplicably or they pulled off a miracle win.

You are what your record says you are. Right now, LA is two off the pace. That is not an insurmountable deficit.

After over 150 games, both teams could pick out a dozen where they lost inexplicably or they pulled off a miracle win.

You are what your record says you are. Right now, LA is two off the pace. That is not an insurmountable deficit.

I agree.

I am just saying it's not fair to pin this on Kershaw when it is Buehler who is really underperforming down the stretch.

Urias is also struggling. His velocity is way down.

We're just happy to have Kersh out there at this point. He's not the player he used to be, whatever the time of year it is.

The Dodgers also had their chances to beat the Giants head-to-head and couldn't do it, even after being spotted a three-game sweep in the first series.

Absolutely.

No arguments there.

I love Mr. May and I appreciate whoever it was that told him it's already October.

TBH, Dodgers would be tied with the Giants right now if not for Buehler's meltdowns.

Well, I agree with you that it's not fair to pin the Dodgers' deficit on Kershaw. That would be ridiculous. It's hard to even say there is "blame" for a team with 99 wins with 7 games left to play. They haven't stunk. They've just been outplayed.

I just like teasing dodger fans about Kershaw. It was a big loss for LA and a big win for SF.

This is Buehler's career high in innings after last year's shortened season. He may be fatigued.

First it was the Brewers, now it's the Cardinals that look like the scariest team in the Central. Wouldn't want to face them in the WC game.
