Well yeah, getting out of last place is worth celebrating.

Do dodgers fans put up banners for getting out of last place? I was told earlier in this thread that Lakers fans only put up banners for championships and would find the current dodgers fans pathetic.

Patting yourselves on the back over a second round appearance? That's pretty pathetic.

Nope. We don't put up banners for getting past the first round. Championship or bust. This year was a bust. Hopefully, next year won't be.

Well, not only for championships.......

Since July of 2012, the A's are 44 games above .500. 106 W and 62 L.

So both the Giants and the Dodgers can SUCK IT.

Edit that, the A's just beat the Cubs 1-0 in Oakland making them 45 games above .500 since 7/12.

In 2013 the A's have 50 wins in 86 games. Currently first in the AL West.

But 1 game under .500 in games that really mattered....

Don't be obtuse. When your team is in 5th out of 5 teams, and it climbs out of the cellar into 4th, it's better than being in 5th. No one is talking about banners or champagne.

Giants suck!

The LA/SF rivalry is the best in baseball. Molly Knight @ESPN concurs. (ask her.) Both have been fighting for the division more frequently than NY/Boston. Compared to NY/Boston, long periods are suckitude are not as long. they're geographically proximate. and there are plenty of anecdotes of fan/player bitterness over the years.

however, I don't think the players are particularly bitter with each other right now. the Giants didn't appreciate Hanley Ramirez' "I see you" gesture on display to the LA dugout after a HR, but that's all that's current as far as I know.

As a Dodger fan, I enjoy going to A's games. Most A's fans are nice, or at least curious to know who I'm rooting for while wearing an LA hat.

Plus it's dirt cheap to get into the park, and you can sit anywhere.

Yankees-Red Sox gets more attention and the fans are probably more passionate about this (West Coast fan bases aren't going to win on that score), but in terms of relative success it's not even close; the Yankees are way ahead. Same with Cardinals-Cubs.

The Giants and the Dodgers are pretty even in terms of all-time success as franchises and have carried the rivalry across two coasts. "Best" rivalry is of course a very subjective idea, but if competitiveness is a major factor then you can make a good argument for SF-LA being the best:

World Series Championships:
Giants - 7
Dodgers - 6

League Pennants:

Giants - 22
Dodgers - 22

All-Time Winning %:

Giants - .538 (2nd all-time)
Dodgers - .524 (3rd all-time)

If some Giants fans can't be happy unless WS happens, well then that's good news for me to hear, because that means they can't live in the present, they're going to be miserable, and I really enjoy that.

Omg, ouch. That's an incredibly depressing thing to wish on anyone. If in person, I might say shame on you.... Lol Jk. Still, this is probably what is going to happen. Early alarm bells are already sounding. Def NO WS this season. That's a reality. We must all accept that. I am Sad.

Still a long way to go and everyone in the NL West is still in it. How many seasons have we had of Monty where it appeared that we were going nowhere, only to make the Big Dance? Why am I giving you hope like this?

Respect. Haha

The Giants are in a horrible slump. Hopefully this changes after the allstar break.

Yeah, the mediocrity of the NL West this year is the one thing that keeps us all in it.

Yes-- an egregious error at best -- a sinister attack on the integrity of Major League Baseball at worst. I call for a Congressional investigation immediately. Where's that guy Issa when we need him?

YES. Losing a 16-inning game while stranding 13 on base, and allowing the winning run to score via a booted ground ball.

It didn't take them long to find a new way to lose. This extra-inning game vs the Mets happened 2 days after the batting-out-of-order gaffe.

It wasn't even just the winning run -- basically all of the Mets runs scored because of misplays in the field. The Giants' terrible fielding for most of this cold streak has been the most befuddling thing, because at the end of last season their defense was terrific, pretty much air-tight. They had mostly the same players on the field last night, and the one guy who is different (Torres) was generally considered a pretty good defensive OF coming into the season. And yet, multiple poor defensive plays that turned a 3-0 win into a 4-3 loss.

Very strange, though again I don't feel like I can complain that much given the two recent championships.

Voggy = 1 world series championship
Kershaw = 0

If we want to give Kobe the title of the Greatest of All Time because he has more championships than LeBron, same can be applied here.

A great night for baseball.

Lincicum pitches a complete game over the Padres.

Griffin pitches 8 shutout innings for a win over the Red Sox.

Complete game? True, but I would have gone with "no-hitter."
