SI came in today and they have De'Anthony Thomas on the cover for their "speed" issue. He suppose to be the fastest guy in CFB, althgough it could be a regional cover.

This got me wondering, is B Bigelow faster?

Without looking at numbers, I would say no.

DAT had a better 200m record, while Bigelow had a better 400m record

if i had to bet, i'd say DAT had a slightly faster 40

Biggie said Wednesday that he runs 4.3 but has not been timed in a while.

Big's track numbers are all from his sophore year I think. I imagine he would have been faster in his senior years sans injuries.

DAT looks faster in pads and hits the open space very very very well. That's what matters over track times in shorts.

DAT isn't that fast. He ran the 100 in 10.65 for Oregon. Shane Vereen had similar times at Cal.

DAT looks smoother, which makes sense since Bigs has been out for a couple years injured. Give him time and we'll see next year.

Who cares? DAT does not play defense. BB only has to beat the defensive players. The two aren't on the field at the same time...

deanthony might be faster on the football field but I think going by track PRs, bigs is faster.

I hope Bigelow runs track in the spring. I'd bet you he goes sub 10.6. He looks a step or two faster than vereen.

I don't believe the sample size for Bigs is large enough to say one way or another on both quickness and 40 X's.

DAT appears to be a very small guy on the field, i dont know if he really is. But if he is, it would explain the appearance of being faster than bigs because his legs are moving faster to run the same speed.

You're comparing DAT to the wrong Bear. The question should be: is DAT as fast as Jahvid Best was when he played for Cal? That would have been an interesting race. Thomas is probably the fastest player in college ball today. Bigelow? I don't know where he would place other than it would definitely be behind Thomas...

This. There are guys faster than him in terms of straight line speed, but DAT is very fluid and just a very good football player. There are guys that are more track than football. DAT is definitely a football guy all the way.

I'd take DJ in the open field before I'd take anyone. There just isn't a better open field runner than him, IMHO. People forget what he can do in the open field becacuse nobody kicks to him, and hasnt in years, dating back to college.

Anytime someone does muster up the courage to kick to him, it usually results in a td.

Actually CalnPlay, Best is faster than DJ over longer distances, but DJ is faster/quicker than Best over 30-40 yards. They raced once and JT said Best won the 100 yards while DJ won over 40. Seems like Best is strong enough to keep/not lose as much speed as DJ

So I've heard. I wasn't referencing speed, just that I'd choose to have the ball in DJ's hands before anyone else in the 'open field'.

I think Black Mamba might be a slight bitty faster. Bigelow is fast, but he looked even faster in his highschool highlight video.

It isn't that DJ "loses speed" it is that with his light weight he accelerates and gets up to his max speed faster (he is quicker) but a taller (longer legged)/stronger runner, though taking longer to accelerate, has a higher max speed--so the longer the distance the more advantage to the bigger runner. I would think you would see something similar between DAT and Bigelow.

Mamba is fast and tiny, like trying to catch a jackrabbit--desean style. Mamba has good vision too and will set up his blocks downfield (assuming he didn't outrun everyone already). He's a game changer, game breaker of the worst kind, hate to see him on the other side.

Bigelow isn't even 100% yet. We have seen him play pretty timid and get hammered pretty bad in 2011. 2012, we've barely seen him but what we saw was incredible. I've never ever ever ever ever seen anyone do a double spin and prop themselves up on their hand and pop up and then go to full speed like that. The agility on that is rare and special. He is who we thought he was--now please, give him more opportunities to show it.

These are two completely different types of runners though. I assume Mamba is faster @ the 40 though. Top speed, I think Bigelow can edge him.

Regardless, they're both almost one second slower than Usain Bolt.

In the SI speed issue there's a article on how fast Bolt would be in the 40 with electronic timing....some suggest a sub 4.0 for the 40.
