You're right about that.

Never having been to Boise, I can't speak to that locale but I did grow up in Yuba City, still have family there and can attest that it is most assuredly NOT Berkeley.

Petterson should be at the top of the initial contact list, Sandy would be an idiot not to include him. Hopefully, she's got her feelers out and is able to get a gauge on what his interests are. He's turned down two of the four CA BCS schools in the past, one could surmise he's content with Boise. Being a N.CA/UC Davis guy, he may only be looking at Cal. Hawkins and Koetter failures are reason to pause, however I think those stumbles are a result of personality failures along with execution failures.

I don't have their records, but it would be interesting to see what Koetter, Hawkins, and Petterson fared against top 25 teams during their tenure at Boise..

Also a reasonable point, but then you run counter to the "we have plenty of players, its the coaching" school of thought...

Not looking for soup, looking for a great coach! The Cal Head Coach search 11 years ago and the hopefully Cal Head Coach 2012 search now are light years away as far as differences. First there is the new pac 12 TV revenue, which has allowed many of the other schools to pony up greater sums of money this year for their football coaches, which is paying dividends this year as far as wins, ASU, UCLA, etc. Next we have a brand new stadium, the Performance Center, an AD that is very supportive of the program and some amount of success over the last 10 years, although the last few have been weak. Couple this with the cost to the school, if they do not sell the ESP's and I think you have the economic pressure to go for the best and brightest, with the facilities to interest them, with a good core group of athletes to coach. Time to move up, step the game up, trade up, so again, after further thought, here is my short list, Peterson, Roman, Carroll (if he gets fired). Go big or go home!

Actually, we've done fairly well against Oregon over the last few years and I can't quarrel with the scheme. Coaching, to the extent that poor execution comes back on the staff, may have been a problem but we don't (nor do many others) have the same quality of athletes that Auburn and LSU employed to stuff the Ducks.

That would be fine, provided that we had the offense to go along with the bend-don't-break approach. Gregory did still bring the blitz, on occasion, when he had to pieces for it.

Many people cite extreme isolation (and Boise isn't in outer Mongolia) as a negative but we're talking about a job that, for most of its successful practitioners, is an all-consuming passion. How many of these guys have the time or energy (even if they have the inclination) to sample night life, go to the theater, opera, ballet, concerts, museums and all the other amenities of large metro areas? If you're working 18-20 hours/day six months of the year and cut it to 12/day the rest of the year, I'm guessing they're really not looking for things to occupy their spare time.

Agreed. If we fire Tedford, we cannot do it on the cheap. We've spent over half a billion dollars. In for a penny, in for a pound.

The only way we get Gruden or someone else at his level is to appeal to his ego. A lot of coaches have tried to do it at Cal and have not gotten us to the top. He would be the first (in the modern era).

Agreed I believe gruden still keeps a home here, has said in previous interviews he loves the Bay Area, definitely a quarterback friendly , Superbowl winner, etc...

If Dooley gets pushed out at Tennessee, I expect the Vols to make a big push for Gruden. His first football job was at Tennessee (GA), he met his wife at Tennessee and he has an affinity for Knoxville.
