We have long wondered about JT's working harder, longer, diminishing returns gambits. It seems that even now, he just wants to put on the blinders and try and concentrate,, focus, effort his way out of the hole. That doesn't work.

Isn't there anyone in the inner circle capable of expanding his thinking? He talks about looking in the mirror, but the point is to do it with your eyes open.

Being tough is great...being smart is better.

His quotes really do sound like man banging against a wall and wondering why it won't fall down. I've been there. Sometimes you are too buried in your own approach.

Last chance JT. Step out of the comfort zone. There actually is value to hearing the criticism and opening up--maybe you can see what you are missing in that mirror.

Not hating. Wanting you to prove us all wrong and recapture your spark!

Emerson: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Einstein (attributed): "Insanity: doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."

If he were going to regain the spark, it would have been this season, coming back to the renovated Memorial. It's over.

Agree! If a beautiful new statdium and killer athletic center doesn't kick start your inner spark...nothing else will...except maybe winning.

Since you mention Einstein, here are a couple more of his quotes which are relevant to JT's plight.
Albert Einstein said:

"Routine becomes of no avail under the swift change of conditions; conventions fall away like dry husks."

Albert Einstein said:

This just baffles me. Tedford got burned by stubbornly sticking with an injured Nate Longshore in 2007 after the OSU debacle, and in the process, he wrecked both Riley and Longshore's collegiate careers. Now, he's stubbornly sticking with Maynard despite the poor results. He also has a history of not maximizing the talents that he has. He underutilized Desean in 2007. He would only give guys like Marshawn and Jahvid a shared workload but would drive guys like Forsett and Vereen into the ground. Fast forward to Bigelow not even being able to see the field.

My point is, what is holding Tedford back from changing things up? Seriously, what does he have to lose at this point. Grow some balls. If you can't deliver a winner. At least deliver a product that's entertaining and that gives us hope for the future. This conservative crap like kicking a FG with a guy that's already missed twice in the game on 4th and 1 on the road at the Horseshoe won't win him any fans. I just don't get it. It's like he's scared to lose his job when in reality, he should have nothing to fear. He's got such an ironclad contract, that he should be free to make whatever ballsy moves he wants. Instead, he's just comically risk averse. This is not the guy that we hired, the guy who opened up with a tailback pass and dropped 70 in his very first game. Tedford lost himself, and if he wants to serve more than the remaining years on his contract, he better find himself quickly.

Working harder on the wrong things never results in success.

JT has not surrounded himself with people who will tell him the truth. Do you think anyone on the staff could straight up tell him "you're wrong about this one, Jeff"? Not sure about that.

I bet he does but he just keeps staring at his wine fridge in his office and offer a taste everytime.

We should coin a term called the "JT Principle", in lieu of the Peter Principle, when it comes to football. The Peter Principle is essentially when a person gets promoted to their level of incompetence...they were really smart and good at what they did, but they'll eventually get promoted to a level where they are no good at all.

So, let's just called it the JT Principle.

- Great at being an offensive coordinator, play calling, and creating mismatches. Oregon genius, turns around Cal team to a high-scoring affair.
- After 2007, becomes more of the HC to oversee the entire program (promotes himself).
- Moves others to take on the OC roles, leaves those main duties behind. Avg score per game declines steadily every year. Complicating the playbook with a multitude of philosophies.
- As HC, makes very questionable decisions:
such as:
- changing starting QB night before opener without telling team
- traveling across country the day before game
- punting in 4th down 2 scores with 6 min left
- etc, etc, enough to fill a book of what not to do as a rookie HC.

Plain and simple, JT is a great offensive mind, but a terrible HC and motivator. He is not cut out to be a great HC.

KAB, according to a post here sometime ago, JT and his then OC Mike Dunbar had to be separated by others during halftime of a game in 2006.

Tedford: "I said put Bigelow in the game Gould"

Gould: "Shove it up you windbreaker, Teddy"

And then the fur flies.

I don't think he knows any other way to be.

Truth be told, coaching is a brutal profession even with the money. Coaches (not just head coaches, but assistants too) put in hours that the rest of us would consider insanity. They spend large chunks of their lives away from their families. Tedford, by all accounts, was even worse about this than your average coach. I suspect that he attributes some of his early success to how hard he was working back then. I'm sure he probably doesn't put in the hours he once did, but he probably still puts in way too many.

At the end of the day, putting aside the questionable decisions, I think the man has been burned out for a long time and the lifestyle has probably taken a toll on him to boot.

Yep- just burned out, passionless.

Last chance JT. Step out of the comfort zone. There actually is value to hearing the criticism and opening up--maybe you can see what you are missing in that mirror.

Quote:

While some have suggested that the team could help Maynard out with a shorter passing game, Tedford explained that the team's constant third and longs make that difficult.

"If you're in third and four, you can throw quick passes. If you're in third and twelve, and you throw a four or five yard pass, you ask, what are you doing throwing that?"
Coach, how about having the young man throw those short passes on 1st & 2nd downs (and cutting down on Isi runs down the middle on 1st down) so that ZM can have more of those 3rd and shorts? How about giving Bigelow 10-12 carries a game to alleviate some of the weight off of ZM's shoulders?
Quote:

On freshmen receivers Bryce Treggs and Chris Harper, who have been quiet recently, Tedford said that they have to continue to catch the ball, run the right routes, and be ready. "If the defense dictates that we go to them, then we'll go to them."
Coach, how about your offense dictate the action more often instead of being so reactive to defenses all the time?

You raise a very good point, why does a guy that is practically revered with an ironclad contract play scared? It is so counterintuitive. He of all people had the luxury too play batshit crazy football--his job was completely secure and we were BEGGING him to take risks, to try other QBs, go for it on 4th and short, etc.

His ass was completely covered and he was still protecting it.
