To say he was "highly valuable" is not true.

What?? Tosh had assembled a top 5 recruiting class before he bolted. And he did this with the program stuck in a rut for years and no history of real success (e.g. not even one BCS bowl or outright conference championship under Tedford's decade at Cal). He was/is much more valuable than Tedford. Imagine what Tosh could do with the new coaching staff... Rose Bowl within 3 years baby!

A close friend of mine who went to high school with Tosh said he was psyched up about the Dykes hiring and the possibility of working with DeWayne Walker to build a recruiting powerhouse in Berkeley for years to come, according to my sources...

Like HCs and ADs elsewhere are prone to do with other openings, Tosh could always say he was offered a position at Cal, but turned it down.

Recruits do it too with (alleged) scholarship offers from certain schools. Helps your rep at your final destination....lol

Long story short -- Tosh will stay at UDub and collect his paychecks. Still young enough to be forgotten and forgiven years from now.

There are various ways you can leave for more money. One way is to be douche like Tosh/Kiffin and there are other, classier ways to leave. If he had to leave for money, advancement, he could have at least waited to recruit Shaq to UW when he wasn't on a Cal visit, not snuck out in the middle of the night and leave Tedford hanging, and been upfront about monetary demands.

No question, of course there are classier ways. However, if he wants to admit fault, you'd still hold that against him? I think you just let it go but know who you're dealing with. Sure he's a dirtbag for pulling a move like he did, but good recruiters are damned dirty (like most agents). Take the gamble and keep him on a short leash.

As for academics, I think that goes well beyond Tosh.

My response was more to you saying you didn't fault him for leaving for more money. I think most people would've accepted that decision. It's entirely on the way it happened.

Wow, truly hell hath no fury like a mediocre college football team fanbase scorned.

Get over it guys.

Tosh, as a former Cal player, did more for the Cal football program than any of you who are not former players have done or will ever do. And that includes all the mega-rich, personal injury lawyer boosters out there. He made some poor choices, but so did Tedford.

Now, Tedford is thankfully out of Berkeley and so let's welcome back Tosh to his alma mater and let this highly valuable and talented young man help his program get back on track and finally lead us to the Rose Bowl with the new coaching staff.

Agreed. We should be able to forgive. He's a young guy and made a serious error in judgement. It happens.

If he can helps us moving forward why would we not want that?

Please. Serious error in judgement? At a certain point you have to accept your consequences have actions and for a Cal graduate to not see that, well, now he learns the hard way. He burned this bridge and he will need to accept that and hopefully it will make him a better person in the future if he ever feels bad about it.

Your argument sounds the same as the one the Bozeman apologists made right before he was caught paying a recruit.

If Tosh is as unethical as his behavior would suggest, UW will be back on probation soon and we'll consider ourselves fortunate things turned out the way they did.

Some of you are taking this as a personal affront.

If this helps Cal football I'm for it. If we're going to get to where we want to get then we need to be all in. Utilize all our advantages and resources. That may or may not include Tosh.

There's a lot of butthurt here but this was never personal against Cal or any of the posters here. Tedford pissed on his own grave when he let Tosh take the fall for that Oregon debacle. Doesn't excuse Tosh's behavior but I'm over it and would welcome him back.

I'm sure Tosh still loves Cal. Byegones.

Tosh is a cancer and a program destroyer. He is not someone that anybody would want on their staff. Football is a team game and he is in it all for himself. He is not a Bear.

I would be okay with bringing Tosh back as long as his contract including several clauses with financial punishment if he were to pull the same **** twice. Something along the lines of being unable to interview for a new position until after signing day, and having to give a 7-day written notice he is leaving or else he is in breach of contract and owes the university some ridiculous amount like equating to his last two years of pay.

It honestly would not shock me if Tosh did turn out to be the person who did spearhead the flopping. He coached the D-line and given what he's done so far it seems like its in line with his cutthroat attitude.

I don't know how you can even compare Tosh to Bozeman (who, incidentally, attacked one of his players at Morgan State last year), that's quite a stretch based on mostly speculation and heresay. Or, as the Vice President might say, a bunch of malarky.

People seem to forget that like them, Tosh is a Cal grad also. And even more, he's a former Cal scholarship football player. Give the kid a chance to redeem himself by recruiting bad @ss players who, under the leadership and direction of a good coaching staff, will take Cal to the Rose Bowl.

Let's say this is true. I don't know. I'm guessing Tedford knew about it but maybe Tosh did this all on his own.

Wouldn't the best move have been for Tedford to take 100% responsibility? What are the chances that Tosh turns around and does what he does to Tedford? Loyalty goes both ways. It's really too bad it went down the way it did. Tedford should have taken that bullet.

Let's take a step back for a second, and instead of "Tosh", think "Washington DL Coach, Anonymous Name".

This "WaDLCAN" makes a lot of money... not sure how much, but reported to be ~500k a year when you factor in incentives... in a state with no income tax. He is paid top dollar for what he does.

Imagine that said WaDLCAN wants to come back to the school he left for more money. Would he do that for less money at the same position? No, of course not. He'd want the same or better $$, and likely a promotion, which could only mean Defensive Coordinator.

Does anyone want anonymous WaDLCAN to be hired as our DC? Aren't we looking for an established DC with experience at that position before coming to Cal?

In my opinion, even if you remove the question of "Tosh" from the equation, this just doesn't hold water. Maybe he really has applied for the job, but why would we want him?

The original post alleged he wanted back in as an assistant to the DC - not as DC. Zero chance he'd be back as DC this offseason. That's just crazy.

He'd obviously have to take a cut. Contrition.

So he'd come back, take a pay cut, and be moving from a state with no income tax to a state with among the highest (if not the highest) tax burden?

I imagine the cost of living in Seattle is ballpark that in the Bay Area, so I guess that wouldn't be much of a factor...

Still, I think that's "just crazy" too. Why on earth would he do that?

He'd do it because the job at Washington might only last one more year and he could see two-three years with the new coach here.

He'd have to accept a pay cut and know that he'd have work to do rebuilding trust with donors, but I would give him the chance if we hired Wilcox as DC. Tosh as DC is not going to happen.

Not to mention that he'll have Prop 30 waiting to take more of his money, as he'll likely fall in the $300-500k new tax bracket:

Quote:

Imposes an 11.3% tax rate on taxable income over $300,000 but less than $500,000--a percentage increase of 21.5% over current policy of 9.3%.

Housing is still cheaper here. You can get a pretty decent home in Seattle or Bellevue for $1M, a nice one for $2M. Probaby not so much in the Bay Area, although the East Bay is cheaper than SF.

To get off that sinking ship and back to his home state and alma mater that is now looking much better with the regime change.

+1, for crying out loud. What are we, New Mexico St.?

What would it say about our program that we had no better option than to go back to the guy who dicked us in spectacular fashion less than 12 months ago?

To anyone who said the Dykes hire suggests we're a small-time program...no it doesn't, but this would. You don't like how certain media members treat Cal football like a red-headed stepchild? I think if we rehire tosh, we get that treatment for the next 20 years.

To me, this would be 10x more embarrassing than UW beating us at our place last month.

Speaking of NMSU (the most hopeless outpost in FBS) I hope that's tosh's next stop.
