You guys are going to be disappointed. The uniforms are for the kids on the team, not the fans, and the kids don't care about classic.
And that attitude is exactly why our uniforms suck. It should be at least partially about the fans, right? Players cycle through the program, but fans are asked to keep coming back. Fans buy jerseys, etc.
Also, IMO it can't just be about the players. Uniforms are also meant to represent the University, and their appearance reflects on the tone the school is trying to set and the message it is trying to deliver about itself and its sports teams. Oregon wishes to deliver the message that their university is hip and modern, and that is reflected in their uniforms. On the other end of the spectrum, Notre Dame is trying to deliver the message that their university (and football program) is storied and timeless and that is also reflected in their uniforms. A program can be successful with either approach (as last season proves).
I would argue that Cal, in all respects other than uniforms, is closer to the Notre Dame side of things than Oregon's. It's the oldest university on the west coast, the campus and stadium are "classic collegiate" in every respect, and we have an old-school marching band. The Oregon-type uniforms just don't fit in this environment, and because of that environment can never go as far as Oregon does in being cutting-edge, so we basically get a bunch of half-measures with updating the uniforms. It gives the impression of an old-school type program desperately reaching at something hip and modern, but not getting there. I say we should go back to the classic uniform style, because it fits with everything else that is traditional about the Cal football experience. If we want to be like Oregon, then we need to go all-in with it: new cutting-edge stadium, band, mascot, etc. (but I don't think the fans and donors would support that).
