Me at the Barnes & Noble book signing:

*The books went flying off the table in all directions, and not only were none taken, a couple of extras were found.

Recently finished best-seller "Demon Copperhead", by Barbara Kingsolver. Highly recommend.

I really struggled with the first 30 pages or so. Not crazy about the voice. Should I hang in there?

Yes, I think. I do know what you're saying. Maybe it's just not your cup o' tea. I really liked it. I'm sure a lot of folks have read this: Any other opinions on Demon Copperhead?

It's been a few months. I started it because all the attention it was receiving and because I like dark academia. I'm a writer and former English major at Cal so I can sometimes get sidetracked by looking at craft and analysis of the author's technique. If I remember correctly, I had the impression that the text was somewhat overwritten and loose with its precision. But maybe I just need a few more pages to get into the groove of the story and style.

I am reading Secret History now and maybe I'll return to Copperhead next.

To add an endorsement of mine, despite becoming a questionable film, Cloud Atlas is perhaps my favorite read of the last 20 years or so...and you do need to be patient with it. The payoff is worth it. And David Mitchell can write! Damn.

Can't believe it took a throwaway comment from comedian Artie Lange to make me check this book out. Pretty sure Ignatius was my Poli Sci 3 GSI.

Just an awesome book, by a unique author. Bump. Speaking of authors, anything by James Elroy or "Elmore Leonard" is likely to be a very good read.

My two cents:

The Wager: A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny and MurderAthena Bookshttps://www.athenabooksog.com product-page the-...

Real page turner. I could not get through Gann's other famous book, Killers of the Flower Moon, because it was impossible to follow. IMO, the movie went the opposite direction and told you everything up front so there was very little reason to watch the 3.5 hours of boredom. Hopefully the movie on The Wager (another Scorsese/DiCaprio movie) in early production is a much better movie. A less known Gann book, The Lost City of Z ,is a good read.

I enjoyed The Wager--I like a good survival story. I also read The Lost City of Z, which I enjoyed. There is something about explorers that captivate me. What is also interesting about The Lost City of Z is that, after all these years, the ancient cities Percival Fawcett was looking for are being discovered through lidar technology.

Given your focus on Hollywood and media, you may want to read this:

Difficult Men: Behind the Scenes of a Creative Revolution: From The Sopranos and The Wire to Ma d Men and Breaking Bad$18.80Amazon.com

Martin was able to have an insider's look how TV changed from a network "vast wasteland" to the way content is now delivered, and thereby completely disrupt the economic model for making movies due to a new breed of anti-heroes that emerged from the debut of the Sopranos onwards to the "showrunners", the "all-powerful" writer-producers behind them, changing TV forever. The first chapter starts with an eye opening account of Gandalfni literally falling apart mentally and engaging in physical self-harm, in order to be able work himself up for his ground-breaking scenes, and goes high voltage from there. A nice high wire act.

Not only am I aware of that big, I'm also aware of the 10th anniversary edition released last year.

A fun Hollywood book I read some years ago was The Fixers--about the guys who swooped in to squelch Hollywood star scandals before they became public--from sex scandals, pregnancies, suicides and even murders.

I've been listening to Michael Richards' memoir. It's excellent . Just great.

I had no idea he was a really intellectual curious person.

I highly recommend.

Homegoing - Yaa Gyasi. She's a Stanford grad, but now lives in Berkeley. That counts for something, right?

As much a collection of intertwined short stories as a novel. About the lives of two families across seven generations, starting with two half sisters. One branch lives in Africa, and one in America beginning as slaves. Eventually the branches reunite. Spectacular.

Really like this thread, glad it's come back to the top.

Two good reads since the thread started: 1) Freedom at Midnight by LaPierre and Collins about the tumultuous period before, during, and after India's independence in 1947. Didn't want to put it down at the end of the day. 2) A Well-Paid Slave by Brad Snyder about Curt Flood and Marvin Miller and their fight against baseball's reserve clause.
