"Not true at all. Middling Cal teams competed with Oregon, UCLA, Stanford for recruits and won quite a few".
- my post said usc, not ucla, furd, or oregon. It is a recent development that cal is struggling to compete against these three schools.
"There were also years Cal got a handful of players SC wanted... Im not just talking about last minute offers like with Treggs either. In hindsight it was mostly Tosh, but that doesn't change the fact we took many of the top dline/lb recruits away from SC... Gabe king, moala, moose, Jason Gibson, whiteside (oh joy!), Martin (super oh joy!), Scarlett"
- that's a fair point, although i believe most of that was the 2011 class, where recruits were shying away from SC because of ncaa sanctions. If you take a look at that class, there was a shocking number of 3* talents (they may have been trying to load up on jucos, i don't recall). the drama at usc conincided with tosh really exploding as a recruiter, he was suddenly the defense whisperer over ed orgeron, and cal fans had sugarplum dreams as we fantasized about what was to be... sigh. but anyway, there was a stretch of time when cal was somewhat competitive for high-level defensive talent in california with usc.
