Really young team decimated by injuries on both sides of the ball, with a brutal schedule with the 2012 quit when the going gets tough psyche to overcome and a culture that needs to be changed, don't blame the coaches at this point.

I love the fact that the kids don't quit and we're seeing kid that were playing in high school a year ago playing against Pac 12 elite players.

I love that the coaches don't throw kids under the bus, don't throw their play charts in disgust and more importantly, keep talking to the kids to help them get through this injury laden debacle!

I 'm definitely no sunshine pumper but I am a realist with coaching experience and more importantly, a fan with 6 decades of watching the ups and downs of not only Cal football but other Cal sports as well.

Hopefully, all the Cal football fans will wait until after the 2015 season to call for any coaches head.

Until then, imagine how bad the kids on the team feel and despite the potential outcome, we all need to come out and support them. It will be worth it in the long run! Think about them like your own kids gong through a tough patch and how you'd encourage them.

They need us and if you went to all the games during the Holmoe era like I did, bringing my future Cal alum son with me, trying to explain why the decks of the frats were empty unlike the examples I had told him about for years, this is waaaaay better.

This is our team and they're fighting the Taliban with no weapons, yet they don't quit. I say we shouldn't either!

I think that is fair. It is also fair to ask whether THIS group - with a guy who clearly didn't really know the assistant ranks well and who lacks side line passion - is the guy to do all that you note above.

Cal loses 55-16 against Oregon. A few hours after the blowout loss in the rain, and Chris McCain is dismissed from the team out of the blue. No reason ever given. No interim suspension. No other public disciplinary action taken before this.

If that isn't scapegoating and a sign of coaching desperation and acting emotionally rather than rationally, I don't know what is.

And the Pollyanna morons on this board who defended that? 44, 37, and 49.

Those are the points we have given up in each game since McCain's dismissal. And each game could have been worse, except that the opponent killed the clock at the end of each game.

Our closest loss is 14 points. We are getting trounced every week. If they aren't quitting, then the coaches are not doing right by them. I don't expect them to have won a lot of games. How about being competitive? How about beating a spread? With as bad as everyone thinks we are, they keep setting spreads and we keep failing to meet even those abysmal expectations.

I was there for every game of the Holmoe era. What burned me was how wrong we did by those players. And that was just emphasized when Tedford came in and they responded to a modicum of coaching.

If we hadn't fired Holmoe when we did, Kyle Boller never gets drafted or gets a sniff in the pros. Asomugha never gets drafted and, unless he gets very lucky and somebody seems something in him as a free agent safety, he probably never gets a sniff either, let alone become the best in the game for awhile. I always wondered how many guys didn't get a chance because they chose Cal and we let them down. Think about those guys when you decide you are going to give the staff a 3 year blank check.

This staff is letting these players down. And they clearly are fumbling around in the dark for a solution. Yeah, something changed against UCLA. Our best 4 days of practice, and this game is going to be the turning point. They can only sell this stuff so many times before it stops working.

I will add that we are playing db's who have no chance against any tall athletic receiver. We need a 2014 recruiting class that has playmakers on both sides of the ball. It's 75 percent athletes and 25 percent coaching in my opinion

I am tired of the blanket injuries excuse. What about on offense? The scheme was supposed to minimize talent deficiency issues, remember? The scheme was supposed to make it easier on the OL, remember? We were promised excitement. We were promised weekly improvement. Remember when Bigelow's problems were going to fixed by a simpler scheme? Where is any of that?

Just curious. If a team is being steadily overwhelmed from the beginning of the game to the end and they are being worn down by superior experience, depth and talent, do you consider it quitting when the other team continues to score in the fourth quarter?

Coaching and game planning can help a team to be competitive in the first quarter, maybe into the second and for the first five minutes of the third, but a superior team will win nine times out of ten and there's nothing the coaches can do about it, that year. Take away 3/4 of the talent that the team started the year with, that year, and you have what we're looking at.

This was a 3-9 team last year and a mediocre one the two years before that. We all hoped and rooted for them, nonetheless, but how can you expect any new coaching regime to turn the players into stars in 9 months when they haven't been for 3 years?

Of course, the coaches were optimistic. Of course, they praised the players. Duh. What did you expect them to say, "these guys aren't as good as they were said to be? We can't win with this team?"

Yes, we got our hopes up just as we do every year. We're fans; that's what fans do. But, WE'RE AMATEURS! We've just got to take it like adults (I was going to say men) and hope for improvement. After last night, I'm thinking this is a 3 year project, maybe 4 (OL). I thought, before the season, it would be 2. So?

Yeah, 4 & 5 star recruits are going to flock here because of our 1-12 record. Get serious! This is CAL! When a corporation hires the wrong CEO, the smart ones cut their loss right away and don't let the company run itself into the ground. UCLA has just as many freshmen starters as we do, but why are they playing better than us? Better coaching? Probably not. They recruited better! With USC's recruiting sanctions they recruited better players from SOCAL that USC used to get, It's a Catch 22, great high school won't come here because we can't win and we can't win without great high school players.:headbang

Another big question, not to be a broken record, but why are great offensive minds like Tedford and Dykes fielding Cal offenses that SUCK? Not just sloppy but REALLY BAD offenses? If the issue was Dykes' assistants you'd see lots of points, lots of yards, bad ST and defense. This? No points, no yards to speak of.

Dykes would win 10 games at TTech and will win one here. Why??

Two years before we were mediocre, but we would easily have qualified for a bowl game if Riley hadn't been injured. As unspectacular a career as he had, he would have easily gotten us the couple of wins we needed with him playing over a thoroughly overmatched Mansion in our last stretch of games.

You forget that Tedford went to the JCs to bring in many key players in his early (more successful athletically and academically) years.

We can potentially recruit more JC guys who are more physically capable of playing and can read, write and pass courses at Cal. Doesn't have to be either/or.

In general, JC transfers are more successful at Cal than students who enrolled as freshmen: Older, more mature, and the opportunity to avoid the weed-out classes.

I don't see the quit. In fact I am proud of the players.

I see enough good players, and good effort among the players, that I am forced to look elsewhere to explain the results.

I am forced to question the coaching. Running more plays faster might work for lessor opponents, but Xs and Os are important when skill levels approach or exceed par and I haven't seen the obvious signs of good coaching. Each game our players must learn the opposition's tendencies during the game rather than knowing what to expect. Our young men are not getting the coaching umteen millions of dollars should provide. But the opposition is clearly coached to recognize each of our basic plays and know our tendencies.

James Dean had it right...

We HAVE had far more than our share of injuries.
We DID have the toughest schedule in the PAC 12
We only won THREE games last year
McCain was an IDIOT
The PAC 12 IS good all around
We DO have the 2nd youngest team in football
We HAVE installed a new offense and new defense
Our O line IS bad
Our D line is lifeless
Bigelow IS a disappointment
We ARE taking our lumps this year
It. IS hard to watch

But I cannot lay it on the coaches, do not think that Cal would ever fire them this year or next, so many of you just have to suck it up or not go to the games...

We will not ALWAYS be the youngest team
Many kids will get a chance to play this year
Regardless of who plays, Goff and Kline will be better next year
Our receivers are terrific
We do need help and they will go the JC route
Watch the WSU model- that's us next year...
(but it's still hard to watch even if I have a beer or two)

Agree that we must have academically qualified athletes; nothing is more important.
But nothing intrinsically implies JC transfers be lessor students; it's just a different path. Judicious selection satisfies both requirements.

For the record, I wasn't necessarily for McCain's dismissal, but it wasn't completely out of the blue. The guy threatened his S&C coach over twitter, was already taken off scholarship once, and was already on very thin ice. I'm not sure where you're getting "out of the blue."

This again? Get over it. You don't get to be in the locker room, you're not owed an explanation of exactly what 'conduct detrimental to the team' means. A reason was given, you just don't want to listen to it. Dykes thought McCain was a pain in the ass whose play wasn't worth the problems he was causing. You want better access? Give the school a million bucks. Otherwise, get over your silly conspiracy theories.

This board is just the worst sometimes

The staff is cleaning up a massive mess left by Tedford and co. Letting him stay for so long really killed the program. This is a 3-4 year project. Any first year success went out the window when everyone got hurt. We're taking our lumps but we are in good hands.
