The big difference is the guaranteed money. His contract with the eagles had something like $15m guaranteed. He only saw $18m from them total.
Now he gets another $16m guaranteed. That is huge.
The only thing that really matters is the guaranteed money, you most likely see very little of the rest that inflate the contract #s.
This is like saying 2 years ago, he had a $30m guaranteed money for the next 5 years. Who gets that kind of contract? no one but star QBs.
dude played it right, balling out of control, just look at that sly smile
This is mostly true. He did "only" earn $18 million from his last deal, but he did it over two years, which is a pretty good annual salary for a WR. When they say you're not likely to get the non-guaranteed money in an NFL contract, it's often because of this exact situation: you get cut before your contract is up. Had he continued to make the Eagle's roster, he likely would have realized the majority of the ~47 million promised to him at roughly the same $9 million/year rate.
Interestingly, his new deal is the one that guarantees him less. He can be on the roster but miss out on as much as $3.75 million in years two and three by failing to play in games, since he has a per game bonus. Technically, he could be on the roster all three years, and only make $16.5 million of the $24 million contract. That's not very likely, but it's possible.
The way this is structured, though, does make it very unlikely that he'll be cut before the end of the deal. In year two, his cap hit would be less than the dead money owed, and in year three, his cap his is only ~$3 million more than the dead money owed. His production would have to fall off a cliff for him to be worth cutting either of those years.
This looks like a pretty good deal for our guy, and for the redskins. I'm pretty happy he landed in a place that will capitalize on his talents. Should be fun to watch.
