I agree with your analysis of the laws in your first paragraph. I do not comment on anything beyond that.

KAM asked what the Law was for this play and I was answering that.

I cannot comment beyond providing clarification and explanation of the LotG. I hold a position with USSF where I must adhere to a code of ethics, a code I take seriously. This code restricts me from commenting directly on the performance of a referee nor to question or comment on their calls.

Not directed at anyone in particular:
Just to pick a nit, in soccer the word is singular: Offside.
This comes from the British term for team (a "side"). When a player was out of position, he was "off his side". Hence, offside.
Sorry. The term offsides when used in terms of soccer is as grating as fingernails on a chalkboard for me. Yes, pedantic.

Actually my mistake. The PBP guys were the ones that said Dos Santos was offside off the Cameroon touch from the El Tri corner. It was Taylor Twellman and Ruud Van Nistelrooy during the halftime show who were emphatic that El Tri were robbed. Bob Ley was trying to get them to explain it, but they just were busy being so indignant that all they provided was a conclusion rather than analysis. Funny how guys that have international caps got this completely wrong -- but Taylor especially sounded like he knew what he was talking about. Oh well.

Man, thats where they put their good crew. That game was pretty well called... let those guys play mostly, and it was insane.

Edit: Nope. Garbage

I'm not going to blame the ref too much for this call. At full speed it did look like his leg got clipped, and they did not have the benefit of this replay (maybe they should).

Though on this angle it seems obvious that he deliberately stepped on the Dutch defender's foot. Kind of like when a basketball player pump-fakes and then throws himself into a leaping defender to draw a foul.

To me (and the camera) it looks like he was making a play on the ball, which to my knowledge is Not a foul. Slide tackles happen all of the time, but when you are doing Tick-Tack stuff in the box you should expect it and so should the ref's.

The De Los Santos goal with the offside call is the reason I think the offside rule needs to be tweaked. Even assuming the rule was enforced correctly, I simply do not see what possible unfair advantage the offense gains by being offside on a corner kick, or other ball played when the passer is already past the penalty area. In that scenario there is already so much congestion near the goal that it's ridiculous to ask the referees to decide who exactly was offside at any given moment for any given pass. Forget about offside and just look for fouls.

Again, I get the need for offside so there is actual passing and flow to the game and guys don't just bolt for the opposing goal every time their team gains possession. But when the ball is already in close it seems the only thing offside prevents is goals being scored on legitimate plays. Maybe there is some other reasoning I am missing.

They are most agreeable and congenial. Just never do business with them. That's when you realize why they were amongst the most brutal of colonialists.

To be fair, at full speed I also thought it was a good call (I was too busy yelling at people at work to see the replay until later).

Also, I dont think it was a flop, or that that guy could possibly plant on that moving target to draw a foul.

It should be overturned on a review, but it wasnt such a bad call.

And why do you think this German is rooting for Chile? She's tall, she's thin, she's hot, and her dad is from Chile.

Just ask her who she is rooting for. You'll get two to three weeks of conversation out of that alone.

A very England kind of loss. Give the early appearance that they might be able to take down one of the power teams, then fall apart down the stretch.

That Tuscaloosa News article was dead-on -- they are Notre Dame.

What might be worse is watching ESPN have their re-cap with three of four being Europeans, all dressed in suits doing commentary on a faux deck sitting on lawn chairs.

I'd give cred if one of those guys showed up in shorts and sandals.

Exactly. They are Notre Dame. A team that once almost single-handedly popularized college football but is now in the middle of the pack and trying desperately to get back to the top.

In this case, most easly asserted because a defender is at the post. Literally as far towards the back line as possible.

Additionally there can be no offside on a direct corner. If there was no contact, the first player to touch it would be legal for those two reasons.

Finally, a player can not be offside on a ball deliberately played by a defender. Ie the header (if it touched the yellow player) is a deliberate play, not a save, and so not offside if a green player then plays it. (Maybe control is more of a factor than I understood)

I posted a gif replay. There is a claim a defender touched the ball first...even then it was a tight call. Everyone was basically in line, with the yellow player sprinting for to clear the ball. You don't stick yourself in the game on that kind of play. No one can tell anything on the replays...but the ref seems to have seen something to disallow a goal in the World Cup for the third time in two matches.

I am interested to know why you would say an offside call on that play (a corner played by the first person to clearly touch it) would be called

Hi Phantom:

Thanks for the response.

I think I may not have been clear in my question, however. I was not so much interested in the assessment of this particular play.

Rather, I was wondering why you had originally posted that the call was terrible because offside had been called during a corner kick play. The inference was that offside should never be called during CK plays.

I was particularly interested in discussing this aspect because this is one of what we call the "Myths of the Game"

For some reason many folks believe that offside should never be called after a corner kick (and again, I really am not trying to single you out - I have argued with many who believe this position religiously). I was just wondering if this was something that was considered "common knowledge" among those in your circle.

My own theory is that this myth comes from an incomplete understanding of Laws 15, 16 and 17. All of these restarts exempt the teammate, who receives the ball DIRECTLY on the restart, from being sanctioned for being a PIOP who subsequently is involved in active play.

However, as already explained, offside can and should be called if the subsequent play warrants.
-TBHW

Aside - there are many other "common knowledge" Myths of the Game e.g.:

-Every time the ball touches a hand, a hand ball should be called.
Um. No.

- It can't be a foul 'cause I got the ball first.
Just because you touched the ball doesn't mean you cannot commit a foul.

- I don't have to back up - they need to ask for ten
No they don't, and you better start backing up right now.....

- That was a high kick! Why doesn't he call the high kick???
There is no such foul as a "high kick"
etc...

Another bad offside call negates a perfectly good goal by the Swiss (fortunately they won anyway). Tell me why it's important to worry about offside on a pass already in the box?
