I sense there is a bit of hypocrisy running rampant within the walls of the Cal football offices.

All we hear about is recruiting the "right academic fit" and the reasoning for running kids out of the program, yet Cal just lost two key defensive recruits because they couldn't even get in the door. If academics are such a big issue then why spend time and resources recruiting kids who can't get in?

Because it sells season tickets. Remember, tickets are non-refundable. Lie, sell tickets, then let the chips fall later. That is standard practice. And it's been going on pretty consistently under SB.

Yeah, more evidence here that Sonny is recruiting similar caliber students as the now much maligned JT. Pumpers can spin all they want now but as soon as Sonny moves on their tune will change.

Atoe didn't have the units, and Lenui dropped a class that he was told he had to take to be UC eligible. Both had good GPAs and test scores for revenue sports recruits. My sense, after reading Moraga's posts, is that the kids screwed-up in both cases, but we don't know for sure since its all private.

FWIW, most schools are going through this right now where the find a few guys are not eligible when push comes to shove.

im curious as to how they qualify say for instance wash st but not CAL ..are the class requirements any different ?

I agree, I don't think this is all on SD. I have to believe that when we recruited these kids they were academically on track to be able to attend in the fall. The staff has access to their transcripts. Pure speculation here, I think something happened in their last semester (academically) that did not allow the boys to transfer.

if i had to guess, its probably on both our staff and leniu and atoe. if either was missing a class they probably could have taken a summer school class at a JC and got in, but they would have needed to catch it in the spring while they could still enroll in JC classes.

im sure that this sort of thing probably happens at a lot of schools but this was really critical and we really needed all the players from this class. i think we lost two guys that would have been in our two deep. huge loss, terribly disappointing. whose fault it is is almost irrelevant. this is going to hurt this team this year

who offered the recruits? responsibility falls on both the staff and the recruits.

that's like asking why the staff is ever liable for results on the field when the players are the ones that are required to lift, eat, sleep, go to class, memorize plays, execute on the field.

staff usually keep in touch with recruits to communicate requirements, touch base, make sure they are taking the right courses and are on track to qualify. obviously in cases like Takk, where they are just short of the cutoff eligibility, nothing you can do. but let's not act like staff has nothing to do with getting players eligible, and getting eligible players.

sucks that we are seemingly only pursuing strong academic players, yet already have almost the same # of ineligible recruits as we did in 2012 (Takk [accepted risk], Ford, Bennett). we just have sh*t luck.

I swear Holmoe deja vu all the time these days. This is so reminiscent of losing Echemandu for a year not because he had bad grades but he didn't take enough units and they didn't catch it in time. And of course then there were those that wanted to put it all on Echemandu and none of it on the football staff.

Of course it is on the kids to fulfill the requirements, but if we want them to actually play for us, we would be all over them making sure they are signed up to fulfill the requirements. Unless the claim is that the two guys deliberately sabotaged the situation, they shouldn't be able to have any confusion. Somebody should be checking in with these guys on a weekly basis - Week 1: These are the classes you need. What have you signed up for? Okay good. You can't drop anything. You have to pass everything. Okay? Week 2: How is your work going? You need to pass everything. You can't drop anything. Got it? Okay good. Week 3: repeat. Week 4 repeat. Continue through end of term. If they did that, there is unlikely to be an issue, and if there is, they would have known about it a long time ago.

Sure, the kid has no right to complain if he was told the requirements up front, but WE do because the football staff is supposed to do their darnedest to get everyone in. If they don't pass the class, fine. You can't take tests for them. But if they just didn't actually take enough units or the right classes, it is on the staff just as much as the kids. This is the kind of mismanagement that is a symptom of the underlying problems that lead to last year's results.

So let me get this straight. When Tedford recruits guys who are able to fulfill their requirements to get into the school and who are able to fulfill their requirements to stay in school during Tedford's tenure, and then they leave after a year under Dykes and the RUMOR is that they left for academic reasons, it is Tedford's fault that those guys didn't choose to fulfill their requirements after he left. But when Dykes recruits guys who don't fulfill their requirements to get into school, how is that Dykes fault?
