I am wondering if Wilton is the guy pulling the strings on some of these decisions, what that might mean? He is a finance guy. Is he thinking cut the fat, or invest in the future? Cut the fat could mean bye bye to several non revenue sports we love. Invest in the future could mean that he has convinced Dirks that we have to as an institution go 110% for athletics or not go at all. The Martin hire leads me to think the later, but I just don't know.

We need to go 110% for football and men's basketball (in fact maybe 150%). The rest of the athletic program is less important; if some of it has to go, so be it. The reality is, however, that if we're successful in football and men's basketball, the rest of the program is much more secure.

Rumor is the interim AD will be a "former student athlete." My guess is Mark Stephens, who played football at Cal during the Kapp years.

She will be tough to replace without question. Monty, Cuanzo, gorgeous stadium, etc.

the chronicle says "prominent alum and former Cal student athlete".

Wonder if that could mean someone from the business world like Stu Gordon?

It also says the sports management program will be through UC Extension. Her contract lasts through june 30, 2015 and is apparently guaranteed, so she needs some kind of task right?

Thank you. Gladstone hired Tedford. Barbour hired Dykes. Tedford created a winner-for several years. The academic problems were happening on Barbour's watch. The winning by Tedfords teams made it possible to fundraise. If you get the football coach right, you can whiff on a lot of others and have a successful department. If you miss on the football coach, well . . ..

For instance (and admittedly this is a small thing) inside Memorial on the wall around the field we should have painted the Periodic Table signs for Berkelium, Seaborgium and Californium.

That should be on the field, the endzone even.

SB isn't perfect but she did a heck of a lot and got Cal stuff it needed (like no other AD in Cal history). I don't think finding an equal or "better" replacement is an easy task but maybe Dirks knows something, or has someone lined up.

This. . . . I think she definitely above average. Kinda a like our last football coach. PLEASE upgrade CAL. Don't CAL this up.

Choosing the most appropriate espoused poster to quote -- Bob Bowlsby. Just need to sort out his current contract through 2019.

You may have a point about TF's moonlighting but he can't be blamed for the defensive problems. With or without Franklin, Dykes offense isn't likely to appeal to 5 star running backs.

I disagree entirely. The Ratto piece casually brushes aside the football calamity and makes this into an issue about our institutional culture making Berkeley such a tough place to win.

It is simple -- if she had never given Tedford the 2008 extension, fired him 2-3 years ago, and then hired a Mora, Shaw, Kelly, DeRuyter or Graham, she would still be our AD.

Instead, she gave Tedford a big extension, waited a long time to fire him, and hired a coach whose only win was a real squeeker against a bad Portland State team.

She was an excellent Athletic Director in a lot of areas. But she was a disaster for football in all areas save the facilities.

Sandy was the head of a culture of no accountability, excuses, and ineptitude for the last 5+ years in that department. No her pantsuit does not return kickoffs but replacing her (hopefully with someone competent) is a huge step in a positive direction.

Well he said it was a money issue which ultimately is a football issue. Had we done much better, our financial situation would also be much better. I'm sure we would've sold more ESP seats, made more overall revenue from ticket sales, wouldn't have had to dilute the Cal experience and, most importantly, elicit money from large donors.

After multiple mistakes of the past few years with stadium financing, APR and Sonny, the donors probably decided that it was time to close their wallets.

And with only a few exceptions a reasonable and sincere discussion.

I've always been a big fan of Sandy's. I think Sandy did many things (85%) really well and I think she did a few things (15%) really poorly. The really poorly things tended to be the most visible.

I agree with Oaktown about the degradation of the football game day experience. I've said over and over that you have to sell it as a CAL game not as a football game... because the more you blur the lines between Cal and the two pro teams, the more you compete with them and you're simply going to lose that one all the time.

I'm also not sure what Cal Athletics stands for. We've allowed Stanford to sort of claim the "academic" thing even tho much of that is bogus. We need to imbue that into everything we do. For instance (and admittedly this is a small thing) inside Memorial on the wall around the field we should have painted the Periodic Table signs for Berkelium, Seaborgium and Californium. That kind of stuff is a great way to tie in the academics to the athletics from an easy messaging perspective.

I would love to see Jack Clark be our next AD. That guy knows how to get things done, he knows how to motivate and inspire people, he's smart, business savvy... he's a no brainer choice, imho. Which, since this is Cal, means it will probably never happen.

GO BEARS!

(Glad to see you back Xul)

I took my daughters to a Cal Women's Basketball game this past season. It was my first. I have to say that when it comes to women's basketball, I'm a chauvinistic pig. I respect the skill but I don't enjoy the game. This experience did nothing to change that.

However, the OVERALL experience was a breath of fresh air. It was like going to a men's basketball game back in our day. Some promotion, yes, but a reasonable amount. Mostly the straw hat band, the cheerleaders/dance team, student athletes busting their butts to win a game, and students and fans cheering them on. What I found was that THIS was the Cal experience I wanted to bring my kids to. The experience I had as a kid going to football and men's basketball games.

I met my wife at Cal. She had NO interest in sports. I dragged her to a football game because I honestly thought she'd enjoy it. She gave me crap the whole way. Then the smoke bomb went off and the Cal band charged out of the tunnel and she was hooked.

Literally after 30 years of going to every game, I just had to take a break from football because my kids were little and it was just torture for them. It nearly killed me not going. Then, I went back and I was literally sad. I think many of you who have not had the break I had do not see how much things have changed in just a few years.

Last year I could have gotten free tickets to one of the night games. I half heartedly asked my wife if she wanted to take the kids even though a night game is a little tough for them. Her concise answer was "Why?" And I realized that yes, we no longer want to go to games unless they actually pay us to go. I watch every game on TV and am passionate about following the team, but actually going makes me sad.

For me, the Ratto piece highlighted things I -- as a fan -- would have never thought of. I know nothing of her fundraising ability and it's rarely discussed here. I do think that from a fan's perspective, The Duke's comments seem more plausible/understandable.

I think she killed it with hiring Monty, and if she played any role (which she must have had to) with hiring Martin (who I think is a good hire but we'll see what kind of results he can produce) was also a victory for Sandy. Nevertheless, I do think that our football program has taken steps back with Dykes, almost back to the Holmoe era and I have no doubt that that played a role.

From an AD perspective, I always thought she was well-spoken, based on what she said and did. Besides the academic/graduation rate major issue (which I'm sure also contributed to her being fired), I thought she tried to keep the department in line with regulations, which if we started winning by cheating, that would end my fan-ship far quicker than losing.

I think Sandy did a great many things to advance our athletic program. I do hope we bring in someone who can hire a good football coach.

That's taking it way too far.

Cal could cut 14 or 15 sports and remain in the Pac-12 so long as those sports remaining include Football, Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball, and Women's Volleyball.

This actually has me thinking about the derivation of the term "paint suit." What gives on that? All suits have pants. Why is a men's suit a "suit" and a women's suit a "pant suit." I don't get it.

93 - I could almost forgive your ridiculous pant suit remark, but you made me agree with Eeyore and that is unforgivable.

Suit, pantsuit, skirt, kilt, dashiki, or go full "naked guy". I don't care. Just give me an athletic department that helps players succeed on the field/court and in the classroom, while maximizing wins and revenue.

It's even simpler than that (assuming we are holding Sandy to the standard of perfect foresight which of course we should). Sandy should have invested all of the AD's liquid assets in Tesla at the IPO, or even better raised even more money in the stadium financing so she would have more to invest. If she had done so the stadium would be paid off and we would all be able to enjoy an ad free game day experience with Nick Saban as our coach.
