I've never been, but have heard nice things about TCU. What's turnoff with Ft. Worth, NYC? Just curious.

Personal bias. Good friend coached there (not a great experience for him) and it's just a boring red bible thumping neighborhood in a red bible thumping state. I don't mind parts of Dallas though.

In the early 80's we had a pretty good string of road trips...Florida, Georgia and Michigan. Went O-fer.

Cal also took trips to Army and, later in the 80's, to Boston College and Minnesota. All of these were losses.

I was pissed that Dave Maggard never got return games from any of these opponents, except Michigan.

The big variable is whether the power 5 ban games against FCS schools or even games against non P5 conference schools.

As Cal's position right now is pretty low, I can't see a home and home arranged with any real power any time soon.

But for curiosity, I looked at LSU and Georgia's OOC schedules during the BCS era (1996-2013). I believe the NCAA allowed a 12th game in 2005? so an SEC school would have played around 66 OOC games. (Maybe a couple more because there were ways to play a 12th game before 2005).

LSU has played only 6 OOC road games @ BCS schools in the BCS era. 3 of 6 (AZ, ASU, UW) were against Pac10 schools. Georgia plays Tech every year OOC, and in addition they have played @ASU, @CU, @ OkST, @ Clemson (Twice), so they have played 14 OOC road games in the BCS era vs BCS opponents.

But it seems the Pac 12 is 'relatively' popular as a OOC destinations for these once every 4-5 year OOC road games.

Yep. The rest of the Pac-12 does:

2011 CU and UW
2012 USC
2013 USC and OSU
2014 UW, OSU and CU
Open dates, but so far:
2015 CU
2016
2017 UCLA
2018
2019 UA and OSU

The advantages of playing Hawaii are many. Looks like a win right now. Great recruiting territory, an extra game if played there (can be a defacto bowl game in December), lots of flights from NorCal and SoCal with relatively low rates during football season, great roadtrip, great Cal alum base....

But lots of bad stuff happens in Hawaii, too.

Not sure I get this. If you were a Big 5 Power and FBS games were not allowed it would seem like we would exactly fit the profile of a team they'd want to schedule-bad team in a good location.

should have been more clear - i meant as the rules stand now cal is not that attractive, though we are always decently attractive due to location. I doubt the P5 go to only playing P5, but I'd agree that if they do, a not so great team in good location (ie Cal right now) would be very attractive. Why won't the P5 choose play only P5? Well, most P5 schools just smoking a few lowly teams will keep them in their place and show the P5 schools are on top. Now, we don't know exactly how the paying players 'full cost' or additional stipends will turn out, so there may be cases where non P5 FBS teams choose to back down or play only non P5 FBS schools.

I'd say the best way for P5 conferences to have scheduling mandates is stop short of only playing P5 schools, and for sure ban FCS games. Set a min of 10 P5 opponents to be eligible for the playoff, and teams can play non P5 FBS schools with the other two games.

A long, long, long time ago (as in back when I was in college), I think Sports Illustrated ran a "best and worst" feature on college football. IIRC, UNC and Cal finished first and second in the "best venue to watch bad football" category.

Unfortunately the venue is even better: but the football is even worse.

Now that's what I'm talking about! We need to schedule major public universities with decent academics (in Carolina's case, we're talking about the school not the program).

We already have Texas on the slate; would love to see Michigan, Wiscy, Iowa, and at one time I would've said PSU but now don't want to have anything to do with the taint of that program.

you want no part of LSU in early September...a night game would help with the weather (marginally) but then the crowd is a bit louder. Playing at Georgia would be marginally better because of the weather...I will give you the two crowds as a wash (only because of the number of years its been since I have been between the hedges) but the LSU scene is intense...

I think Luke and the guys coming from AZ might be a little less over-whelmed by the weather(yes, I know the AZ heat is different, but they have dealt with more extreme elements) but for NorCal guys the humidity can be shocking; it was for the team at Maryland, and North Carolina certainly will have that potential....

Nothing ... especially if you live in LA. However, if you reside in the Bay Area or a place like NYC, then Ft. Worth will be a real drag. Dallas is to Houston what LA is to SF in California. Houston is the international port city with major cultural influences and neighborhoods around town from all around the world. Dallas - and Ft. Worth in particular - is the epitomy of plastic living. If you like that sort of thing, then you should be fine...

In fact ... after having lived in the Bay Area for 22 1/2 years and here in Houston for 28 1/2 years, I would draw the very rough cultural "equivalents" for you California folk:

Houston = SF Bay Area (ex Berkeley)
Dallas/FortWorh = the LA sprawl
College Station = Davis
San Antonio = San Diego
Austin = Berkeley

If you love the LA lifestyle then I'm sure Fort Worth would appeal to you. Otherwise, it is just a s#&t hole.

I see that's on a relative scale, but on a more absolute scale, I propose:

Houston/Bakersfield
Dallas/Fresno
San Antonio/Lancaster
College Station/Redding
Austin(not as liberal as people think)/San Diego (not as conservative as people think)

It's also ribs/brisket vs pulled pork. Don't even bother asking anyone from North Carolina about Eastern vs Western NC style sauce unless you've got an extra hour to kill. Lexington, North Carolina is the capital of North Carolina BBQ. It's about an hour and a half away from Chapel Hill, but on the way from Charlotte if people want direct flights to anywhere. Allen & Son on the outskirts of Chapel Hill is outstanding.

Ha! Yeah ... it was totally relative. But your absolutes are just a carzy off-the-charts as well. Bakersfield? More like Midland and Bakersfield would make sense.

The truth is likely some where in between on an absolute scale.

I think UNC is an attractive matchup, but I still think this was poor scheduling.

Unless they do something to change the order in the next few years, 2017 will be at Stanford for the Big Game. That means five conference road games. With BYU being an away game, and assuming a bodybag home game for the last OOC opponent, that will leave five home games and seven away games. That's pretty brutal for both the team and the fans.

Actually, North Carolina has turned into such a disgusting state, I'm sorry to see this.
We won't go to the Outer Banks or anywhere else in NC.
NC makes Georgia or Alabama look almost progressive by comparison.

Yep, Chapel Hill is fun! I went there for grad school long ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Met some great lifetime friends there. If you can go, I'd highly recommend it. Especially in the fall, since the colors are underrated in my opinion, 2nd only to the NE.
