Pretty sad story. Reflects poorly on Dykes and Likens. Unclear why they pulled Grisom's scholarship. I'm guessing Dykes did this b/c he didn't need Grisom with the number of WRs on the team.

Why couldn't they just try to find a donor to give Grisom some financial aid when he decided to leave the team?

This is a clear case for NCAA athletic scholarship reform. Dykes and Likens shouldn't be getting away with this if Grisom were in good academic standing.

Agree it is a sad story. But if Grisom can't get a scholarship, how can a donor give him the money to allow him to keep playing football. Wouldn't the donor's gift be considered a scholarship or an unpermitted "gift" of funds.

unfortunately this is probably very commonplace in college football in general. its why players a clamoring to get paid and have more rights. college football is a business and often times it is ran with a employee-employer relationship and can be cutthroat.

I suggested giving Grisom financial aid if he decided to leave the team. Hence, his aid wouldn't be considered a violation of NCAA rule.

im not so sure about that one eeyore. my first thought reading the story was that either a deal with the financial aid office would need to be worked out or Grisom would have to take out a loan. because of Grisom's affiliation with the football program, i could see where thatd be a violation though. not sure about the exact rules, but knowing the ncaa...

Who doesn't know that scholarships are year to year? Seriously. (especially since he is a promoted walk-on). I really don't have much sympathy there. And I'm really not too sure how someone could think it is right that they are getting an athletic scholarship and regular financial aid - which combine must exceed normal expenses. He never thought to tell someone that he mysteriously was living the high life? That said, I think it is ridiculous that the stupid university can't figure out how to manage aid packages...strikes me as a load of crap that they over pay by 11K and give the kid 3 months to pay it back or drop out of school.

Agree that this is probably common at other schools, BUT I doubt Cal alums would agree that we should behave like SEC schools when it comes to treating student athletes. Unless there's another back story, Grisom seems like a true Cal student athlete. His achievements, in spite of his financial situation, should be rewarded. And for Dykes and Likens to not talk to Grisom before he got the news via email, that's just unacceptable. It's like getting fired by your boss via email. Gutless.

the only thing I'd attribute to Sonny is that he could've made it clearer to Grisom that the schollie is renewed by year.

but the SCHOOL messed up with the disbursement and caused him to be in this position. i certainly hope that the school has reached out to donors to see what they can do about this.

if one family can donate $30000 to keep Main stacks open around te clock for finals, then I'm sure we all could help a guy who has worked his ass off to be here to stay afloat.

If anyone is a true student-athlete, it's this guy. we always preach about the case that football may end some day, well it ended for James. now what has he to fall back on? $11,000 in debt? what a **** message.

He was a walk-on, so I doubt becoming a scholarship player for him was expected, but why is he liable for the administrative fuckup?

The school fucked up for sure. But as far as I've known, when walk in earns a scholly, it's generally for a semester, maybe a year.

I've never heard of a recruiter scholly player randomly losing a scholly.

Walk-on scholarships are typically for 1 year. I thought this was understood by everyone.

i agree, it was clearly overlooked by our staff. Im glad the daily cal ran the story. if Grisom is allowed to receive aid from alums, im sure that there will be some willing to step up and make life a little easier for the guy.

but the biggest issue is that the school messed up in disbursement, and now wants it all back. hey buddy, yeah we're going to need that $11k back....

Wow. This is totally messed up. When he was put on schollie, did all of you assume that it was only for a year? How do you grant a schollie and not make it crystal clear that it's only for a year if that's the intention.

The confusion around double payment is one thing, but he still got screwed by the coaches. I doubt he was "living the high life" since he was working 2-3 jobs to make tuition before the schollie.

They screwed up badly, and even if Grisom was aware he was double dipping, it doesn't seem like demanding repayment of $11k or drop school with a 2 month notice is fair treatment. Disappointing.

Seems like they could still allow him to enroll and pay his way and pay back over time and withhold his degree if he doesn't repay by the time he is done.

That's what they're doing.. He's still in school and working with the aid office to pay it back.

Even if it should have been understood as one-year scholarship, Dykes or Likens should have talked to Grisom PERSONALLY about not renewing it before he got the news via email (from an admin office). I have not been a critic of this staff before, but I'm pretty pissed at how they handled the Grisom situation. This is management 101 stuff.

Looks like there's plenty of blame to go around. Yes, scholarships are year-to-year, but rarely are they pulled absent conduct as set forth in the article. Grisom apparently has met the scholastic requirements and he was contributing to the team, so what happened? He received more money than he should have. Tsk, tsk. Or, the left hand didn't know what the right hand was doing. Some programmer screwed up and a program on the Cal computer system failed to alert the parties early on to this problem. As the article mentions other players may find themselves in the same pot of soup. Dykes was probably mouthing the words told to him by someone in the AD Office. Can't believe he would take the scholarship away from a kid who was a contributor.

Well if anyone knows how to set up a donation account to help him, and we can do so without getting him or the school / athletic department in trouble, then I'll be the first to donate. Sounds like he has his hands full and some mistakes / lack of attention occurred all around.

Do you think Goff or Rubenzer would have gotten their scholarships pulled if they were receiving more money than they should have? Unless there's another story, Grisom got his scholarship pulled because Dykes didn't need his services and wanted his scholarship for another player. Dykes should have just told Grisom upfront instead having some admin tell him over email. Over-payment is a separate issue from that.

Eeyore - he was given a one year scholarship to reward him for his dedication last year. Recruited athletes are offered 4 year scholarships whereas walk-ons are offered 1 year scholarships on very rare occasions. If he was one of the top receivers on the team, you are correct that the scholly would have been renewed. Otherwise, the coaches make it available for other players. That fact that he did not know this is a bit surprising as he is on a team filled with athletes, some on scholarship, some not. You appear to have an agenda here. Is it to help Grissom or bash the coaches? If it is to help Grissom the. Let's get it done.

Eeyore has, up till now, almost always defended the coaches from excessive criticism. I doubt this is an agenda--unless he's related to Grisom.

but if anyone has a way of helping out James, i'd be glad to contribute as well.

This is the problem I have with the situation. Even with the terrible season the team had last year, I have always been a supporter of Dykes and Co., waiting to see what he can do with a team that is healthy and has bought into their system.

Talking to James in advance of not extending his scholarship for the next year would of been the nice thing to do....instead of having James learn about it from an email.

My agenda is both. Help Grisom and bash Dykes/Likens.

Take a look at this quote from the article: "[Grisom] says he met with wide receiver coach Rob Likens, who was stunned Grisom hadn't been informed prior to receiving the email."

So Likens knew Grisom should have been informed in person, but Likens is not taking the blame for not telling Grisom? Uh, how would you like to be informed by your boss via HR email that you've been transferred to another group (or worse, fired) and no reason given? Like I said before, this is basic management 101 stuff.
