It closed down about a dozen years ago after the founder, Mr. Flintroy, passed away. It re-opened a few years later but it wasn't the same, specifically the sauce. Something was missing. I think it finally closed for good in 2006? I had good memories of that place. Nothing quite like party fun and ending the night with Flints. I think they were open until 2 or 3 a.m.?

How sad! I've tried BBQ many other places around the country and there's no place like Flint. Used to go either there or Topdogs after Moffit closed at 2 am. Great memories.

Nice list LINK

Why isn't Top Dog on the list? There is a Top Dog in downtown Oakland.

Nick's has legit pizza. They're actually planning to open a 2nd location nearby in Temescal. I'm still an Arinell's guy though (Downtown on Shattuck).

Our go-to family pizza place just closed (pizza pazza on piedmont ave... kaiser permanente side... i'm a brain surgeon, so i would just pick up a pie on the way home, post-op). i am so bummed... it wasn't gourmet "pizzaiolo" pizza, just really good, normal family pizza and they delivered.

what else is good within a mile or so of piedmont ave/pleasant valley or grand lake theater? don't say "boot & shoe service", i said "family pizza"... surprised that The Star has take-out pizza: It was "pretty good", but the parking was WOAT on that fri nite

Slicers is a good quick option, but probably not what you want. Sorta a fast cheaper boot and shoe. There's the Lanesplitter takeout nearby. A lot of people like Lococo's, though I haven't been in years.

Not surprised about Pazza. Decent pie, but bizarre and often unfriendly service. I've been in there when it was great but I've also waited for 45 minutes to have them heat slices for me and my kids, when the place was empty, and I had them take my order and immediately misplace it causing another long wait. Stopped going after that.

I would say with your criteria Lanesplitter is your best bet. You could go to either the Temescal Telegraph or the Lakeshore near the Grand Lake branch. Good, decent not fancified slices and pies.

We just tried Amazonia's for the first time last night, and liked it. They offer regular crust and New York-style thin crust, and offer a combination of "fancy" pizzas and the build-your-own route with the usual array of toppings. They are on Telegraph, but deliver to your area. http://www.amazonaspizza.com/

Tried Slicer a few times, but the pizza loses something when it needs to be reheated (even in oven). Plus, they try to be too "gourmet" in their toppings and flavors and I don't like that much more than my 6 yr old does... and it's about 50% more expensive than Pizza Pazza was.

Must've had Pizza Pazza well over 100 times, usually delivered. Yeah, 80% of the time everything was fine, then they'd screw something up, like a 75 min. wait, or something. Tasty pizza on a nice crust, though... I'm gonna try Lanesplitter: My wife put that on her list of possibilities, too. Thanks, all.

Cafe Rustica is our usual pizza place, but if you want thin crust, it's probably not a good option for you.

Did you hear they're closing/selling the College Ave location but keeping the Monclair location. Sorry if that's bummer news.

Yikes. No, I hadn't heard that. I wonder if they'll still deliver from Montclair. I'm surprised they're closing College Ave and keeping Montclair open...would have guessed it would have been the other way around.

During my years at Cal (early 80's) we used to eat at a BBQ joint named "Flints", hole in the wall type, in Oakland. I remember going straight on Shattuck to this place. It was amazing - haven't had the same BBQ anywhere else. Does anyone know about this place? Is it still around? Or moved somewhere?

When at Cal I shared an apartment with a classmate and our apartment was about two blocks from the Shattuck Flint's. My roommate used to go there once a week. One late Friday or Saturday night he talked me into walking there with him to get some food. I remember we each ordered the "three way" which I think was chicken, pork ribs and some form of beef.

After we ordered, the dude behind the counter preparing the orders (who was dripping his sweat into the steam trays where the meat was held) asked us, "you boys want the honkey sauce, the hot sauce, or do you want me to 'tease it'?"

I also recall going to the "Til Two" that was just down the street from Flint's.

They have a cut off zone but given they're closing, who knows. I'd guess they'd want to keep Rockridge and close by in the loop with delivery. BTW, they're selling the tiki bar upstairs too...with a liquor license, it has to be worth more.

Shame if new ownership doesn't keep it a Tiki Bar. Can't have enough of them if they're done well enough to preserve Tiki kitsch but still offer fresh, quality Tiki drinks and fun atmosphere.

Tried that place the other weekend. Got the "regular crust", with, like 3-4 "normal" toppings. The pizza was "okay", not that great. Overly salty. I might try it again, but I'll try something else, first.

The neighborhood was "interesting". In transition, but still run-down to the point where, after dark on a Saturday evening, I made sure my body language and facial expression said "Born and raised here, dude", as I walked to/from my car (especially when I was carrying two pizzas).

I've always liked that Tiki Bar, even though I only get there maybe once a year. It's like going on a mini-vacation and also a good place to take out-of-town and foreign visitors. Yeah, hope it stays!

(For me, the Cafe Rustica pizza has always been "good/pretty good", no better. BTW, can we all agree that Zachary's is overrated?)

Now you're just trying to stir the s***.

But speaking of Zachary's, I highly recommend Jules Thin Crust Pizza, which is right across the street from Zachary's on College. It is VERY good, esp. if you're a thin-crust fan. I don't think they deliver. At first, I thought the pizza would be a little too fancy for kids, but every time I've been in there, it's been packed with families. Good stuff.
