When I was a kid in the 70's San Diego State was the Boise State of that era. In the 60's and 70's SDSU was a monster of a Mid Major (even if the term didn't exist then). They even had multiple undefeated seasons (even at the D1 level). And then the AD went mental and fired Head Coach Claude Gilbert and the program fell apart. It would have a few good years here and there, but nothing sustained. We had a great year in '86, making it to the Holiday Bowl and nearly beating a good Iowa team (only losing on a last second field goal in a wild game). Marshall Faulk came in, but we didn't have enough defense to win consistently. Then we had a decade of losing, culminating in the debacle that was Chuck Long (one of the worst Head Coaches ever).
We finally got the program back on track with Brady Hoke, winning the Poinsettia Bowl handily in 2010. After that it was a holding pattern and then slow decline. Rocky Long has not been able to recruit a good QB to save his life. The program was built back up into a winner by Brady Hoke (and Rocky Long as DC), but that program building momentum has been lost. It's kind of like a game where you can feel the momentum shift and you know your team is going to lose even though they're ahead in the 3rd quarter. The momentum shifted a couple of years ago and we haven't been able to turn it around. The program has regressed over the last two years. We've got a good foundation, and a really good coach could take this team to the Top 25. There is a TON of talent in San Diego County, but we rarely keep any of those players in town (see Stefan McClure as an example, who went to my high school - 25 years after I did). We need a coach who can keep San Diego talent in San Diego.
Anyway, after only scoring ONE offensive TD against an FCS Non Scholarship team on Saturday (while also piling up SIX three and outs) that was the straw the broke the camel's back. 35 years of frustration was vented in a 12 hour span.
You guys have had your share of frustration recently, and it looks like that may be coming to an end. I'll be rooting for you guys - except this Saturday.

SDSU was an up-and-coming program under Don Coryell and Claude Gilbert in the '60s and '70s, but things went off the rails when the latter was fired at the end of the 1980 season. By now few Aztec fans see any chance of joining the Pac-12. Our only hope to avoid the Group of Five ghetto is to join the Big-12, but (and here I speak especially for myself) that dream seems almost as futile as the dream of joining the Pac-12. The best we can hope for is to displace Boise State as the best in the Mountain West Conference.
6. One more thing; Cal is one of the few big name schools that SDSU has actually beaten in football. Others include Oregon State, Washington State, Minnesota, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Miami of Florida, Arizona, Florida State, and most impressively Oklahoma. Yes, yes we do. We are working on 6 decades of bad luck, flukey plays, and just plain weirdness. In the Stanford game last year we scored a touchdown 3 times in a row on one drive, and the replay refs overturned all 3. The following week the Pac-12 reviewed the sequence and said 2 of the 3 tds should not have been overturned. That's par for the course for us these days it seems.
