After watching the Bears' defense the past 3 years, I feel desperate.

If Tosh could start bringing in 4* and 5* DLs and LBs and reduce the opponent's average per game points to 25;
Would you be willing to have him around. I know he is treacherous, devious, etc ; but, so are the PAC-12 offenses.:headbang

this is not gonna happen

cal has already been down the road with 2.5 gpa dumb azzs that are academically ineligible & eventually flunk out, that may work at alabama but it won't work in berkeley

the fact that you don't understand this by now is a real mystery

Yes. I would also be fine with changing our colors to red.

*EDIT*

Sorry for being so harsh, but this question makes little sense. He's even gone from UW, now.

1. There is no evidence that he could do it.
2. He isn't treacherous and devious. He is very unethical.
3. There are coaches that could do that without being very unethical.

There are multiple requirements for the job. It may be that the current staff don't fulfill all of those requirements. If that is the case, we will look elsewhere. We already know that Tosh does not fulfill all of the requirements.

Don't feel desperate. We are improving on defense, and at least the trend is heading in the right direction.

Independent of wins and losses, following Cal football and watching the games had become a painful process during Tedford's last few years. It was getting harder and harder to root for the players when too many players didn't seem very interested in playing the game and when they didn't seem to appreciate the academic opportunity presented by attending a school like UC Berkeley.

The record notwithstanding, the last two years have been a blast. I love the character of the team, the players, and, for the most part, the current coaches. I, like every other Cal fan, want to win. However, considering that the purpose of Cal football is to connect the students and alumni to the school and for the fans' entertainment, if the team doesn't represent and appreciate the core qualities that made us want to attend Cal in the first place, the team fails to live up to its basic purpose and eliminates my motivation for wanting to follow Cal football.

As such, if they bring back someone like Tosh who represents nothing I love about Cal and would take the joy out of watching the team irrespective of their record, it would be an utter failure on the part of the administration.

I wish there were an easy way to look up raw stats and make up some metrics on our own ... just to go beyond the generic total points allowed per game and yards per game. I don't think defenses get a fair shake statistically when paired to a spread offense. For starters, I'd like to know points per possession or points per play. I'd also like to see points per possession sorted by quarter to see of defenses that accompany spread offenses get tired late in the game due to the increased possessions. And do this looking not just at Cal, but other types of hurry up offenses and compare to regular, etc etc.

oops, how does this relate to the tosh thread? Well, I don't think our D is as bad as people think. It was pretty good for 3Q vs Texas. Some great stops and turnovers too. Just when a spread offense can't produce in the 4q the D is likely more tired and the number of possessions are going to be more than most teams face.

Lets say this is any major company in Corporate America.
You have a valued employee that not only leaves, but (and without going into all the details) completely stabs you in the back on the way out the door.
And even though an Alum and one given his first chance at your company (Cal).

To me the guy is complete deadbeat. I would rather hire a monkey or leave position open.

As to Tosh only hope his boat sinks and he is lost at sea -- no sympathy for traitors and don't want them anywhere near our program.

NO! Tosh didn't just burn a team he worked for, HE BURNED THE SCHOOL HE WENT TO AND PLAYED FOR! I don't any scenario where he's ever given a job here again.

Why are the many, young, talented coaches out there with similar skills, still out there?
Did someone say this year's defense has improved? After 3 games(2 against cupcakes!) how do we rank in the PAC-12.

BTW - I thought this OP would cause old wounds to open; but, like I said, I'm frigging desperate reading about all the excuses and in depth, scientific analyzes and explanations of the Cal defense schemes.

I do believe that this defense has improved. I have watched the games, and, while they did get shredded by the long runs by an amazingly fast QB in the fourth quarter, they have looked much better. Having watched the games in 2013, 2014 and now 2015, you really don't see the difference?

Great post, thanks. A couple of people in Austin asked about Tedford's tenure. The Vince Young era 'Whorns won a title, but the grad rate was around 40%. Wisconsin's F4 team this year was in the same ball park. UNC took institutional cheating to a whole different level. All of those are solid schools which have a lot more than just athletics going for them. Can understand why a guy like Tosh would end up at Alabama. He's in his mid-30s now and his shelf life as a recruiter is creeping up quickly. He needs to improve his on field coaching, but he's never coming back to Cal (and rightfully so).

Hook, line and sinker (this is what I first thought when I saw the question posted) .... many of you all took the bait and responded

And then, the OP went and added on ... SERIOUSLY!!!???!!!!

No way, no how .....EVER!!!!!!

I don't know why you're desperate and why this desperation would allow you (OP) to think the end justifies the means. As much as Cal football means to me and how badly I want Cal to succeed on the field, there is no way I would want this if it meant the complete destruction of all levels of morals, integrity and honor in life. This fool deserves nothing from Cal .... forever and beyond. He can apologize for the next million years and it won't be enough.

Hell has no fury like an alma mater scorned (I changed it a little but you all get the gist)

Also, there is no guarantee he could fix the "problems" anyway. Our team is fine. Aren't we 3-0 right now???

Go Bears!!!!!!

I would add that it would be totally inconsistent with Cal's new requirement that, by 2017, 80% of all incoming athletes must have a high school gpa above 3.0. Tosh just doesn't recruit those kinds of guys.

He has been getting far less than stellar reviews at Bama. Now with 'Bama's defense looking very suspect, there's a good chance Tosh will be looking for work again at the end of the season.

I can't imagine under what circumstances Cal fans would take him back, but he's made zero progress on the path to redeeming himself with Cal fans. I'm guessing that means he still has zero interest in ever returning here. Getting past all that, the truth is he wasn't a very good coach, either at Cal or UW (and apparently getting exposed at Bama). He could recruit, but his mediocre coaching offset a lot of this. And he seemed to have a knack for finding the recruits who went on to become attitude problems or complete busts - which undoubtedly has something to do with the fact Tosh's personality puts him in that same category.

Tosh was great when we was bleeding blue and gold and going the extra mile to land recruits. When he was upgraded to coach he started adding less and less value. And when he switched his colors from blue and gold to green ($$$) he stopped being worth much to anyone. His value to UW seemed to be solely to keep Cal from getting too far ahead in the recruiting pecking order. He certainly did that much. As far as adding any real value to UW, much less Bama, it doesn't look like his contributions were anywhere near worth the ridiculous salary he was paid.

Go Bears!!

This is a good point, because if you go the Tosh route and win, it's definitely less sweet, and if you lose (like we did under late-model Tedford), you feel like 2x as much of a dumbass as you would otherwise.

That is not the issue, our defense is far worse than it ever was under Tedford and only appears marginally improved, and we gave up the most passing yards in a single season in college football history last year. There may be amusement in watching mediocrity but awfulness is hard to bear, and we just want a defense that is not horrendous.
