Spengers was bought by the Seattle based seafood chain McCormick & Schmick (I think that's right) quite a number of years back. Really cleaned it up and yet kept the very same look and feel. It would be akin to a higher end Italian restaurant taking over Bertola's ... Same place but not the same old place.

That would explain the high quality Raw Bar then. Big McCormick & Schmick's fan - they own several NY seafood restaurants and they fly in all the seafood fresh each day.

Like your analogy but I don't think Spenger's at its lowest and dirtiest ever compared to Bertola's --- at least not the $1-triple-drinks 1980's Bertola's of my memory...

Don't forget to stop by La Burrita, a favorite of people on this board with excellent taste in food. It's considered some of the best Mexican food north of the border.

And you can see just 2 doors down another Berkeley landmark "Top Dog" with fantastic hot dogs of many types. It has been on that same spot since at least 1972 when I was a first year law student and survived on Top Dogs every night for dinner. (just a short walk from Boalt Hall School of Law (now Berkeley Law).
