Having the Jordan brand for basketball was a pretty big perk for a lot of us, not many schools have that.

BIG PERK - no pay. Nike cheaped out on Cal in a major way. But you'd expect that from Uncle Phil's lackies.

people keep saying this, but what was the benefit? As far as i can remember...the "exclusivity" was only apparent when they designed silver jerseys (Jorge, Crabbe era) for Jordan-brand teams. other than that, I dont see any benefit for being part of this exclusive group.

Other than the "coolness" factor of having the jumpman logo on some team gear and getting to wear some Jordans, I can't see any benefit. Certainly didn't translate to any extra money or better recruiting.

I kinda feel like the those that prefer nike for men's hoops don't understand the need for cash

This was the perfect time both football and basketball doing better/progressing

Is 150k per year vs 8 million not enough reason to say FU ?

What people don't seem to be asking is, "What was Nike's counter offer?" Let's assume Cal Athletics' negotiators are competent and went back to Nike and said, "Hey Nike, UA is offering us $X per year and 'West Coast flagship' status, what's your counter offer?" If it was say, $7.5 million and 'West Coast elite status' (this probably doesn't exist, but you get the idea -- Cal can't be Nike's flagship because Oregon is the true flagship), then I hope that Cal did some sort of study to quantify the non-explicit value difference between the two offers. E.g. projections of revenue change in fan apparel purchases due to the brand change, projections of affect on recruiting, student input, etc.

It's not as cut and dry as $150,000 vs. $8,000,000.

iirc, the contract called for nike to have the option to match any offer made by a competitor; essentially we were a restricted free agent. if they decided to match the offer, we were bound to accept it and go with nike. It's just as likely that they got notice of the $8m/year tender and simply declined to make an offer.

True Blue.
Is that a superman logo at the bottom of the neck? I know that is a cam thing. Wonder if that is a UA thing. Looks embossed.

As a long-time UA stockholder, I love this. UA is a quality company, makes quality gear,is the upstart to Nike - I think they are like Apple in its early years. If you doubt Plank and the company, take a look at their financial figures over the past few years...
Glad Cal is on board with them.

Could it be that: considering UA's assessment of our future success in many sports, including majors, it could be they feel good for getting in early before our value climbs. Win-Win.
