Jordan Brand>Under Armour basketball and its not even up for debate. UA **** is tacky as hell, recruits still want nike. Good to see we are getting more cash, but I won't any of it --- only nike or the classic stuff like the hanes cal t shirts from bancroft clothing

Getting recruits based on brands strikes me as players that should not be at Cal. If this sounds old (or out of style), so be it. Either you like the program and education or not. If you want to make your college decision about fashion, go to Oregon or ASU.

And yes I do get the corruption factor in AAU basketball, but that doesn't drive my bus.

Big investment of money and time by UA. They must really believe in the Cal brand. From our perspective, we need to hope Curry is still appealing in the future. Another reason to cheer for Golden State.

The football home unis look similar to the ones we had in the mid to late 90's which were the best ever. The guys at Under Armour look like they know what they're doing.

Agree, this is a much more promising direction. Cal needs to stick to it's classic roots.

Finally Cal has an AD that understands and is qualified for that position ... understands athletics, but more important, Numbers.
Dykes new contract was the first major clue, and totally different from the clown in that office before.

I hope you're right but I can only wonder why no contract has yet been offered to Cuonzo Martin.

A contract has been offered to Martin and agreed upon by him. It simply needs to be ratified by UC and Napolitano and we all know how that goes in times like these.

It will happen but the question is how long does she drag her feet?

? UC doesn't delegate decisions like that to each campus ? ???? ????
Seems there are other larger, more long-range planning and necessities that could occupy her time.

there are/were only 4 Jordan brand schools: Cal, UNC, Georgetown, Marquette

theonlymember;842680170 said:

I'm going to go against the grain here and say this is bittersweet. Happy for Cal and the $$. From a fashion standpoint, this is terrible. UA doesn't have anywhere near the brand appeal of Nike.

Will it affect recruiting? Who knows. But there's a reason why Oregon has 12948209 different uniform combos. We were also one of a handful (gotta be less than 15) of schools that had Jordan brand jerseys in basketball.

I doubt Rabb would have changed his decision to come to Cal

I also doubt Brown would have changed his decision to come to Cal, but I think Jaylen's goals are to become a NBA star, and also to have a big endorsement. Basically I think he's shooting for the moon. Therefore wearing the Jumpman might have been a positive factor in his decision to come to Cal

Cal89;842680352 said:

HD, in your opinion, do you think we might have lost-out on any notable recruits in the past if we had been a UA school, or any current ones? I would like to think Rabb and Brown would have still gone here, regardless, but I have no idea...

My initial feeling is that if a recruit is placing that much emphasis on the gear, enough to influence the final decision, maybe that's not a recruit best suited for this fine university. Recognizing my ignorance on this matter, maybe I don't understand the ramifications completely...

there aren't really a whole lotta million dollar salaries to be signed off on UC wide. I'm sure they all get floated by the Pres of UC at the time

Money talks and bullsh*t walks. $150k/year from Nike, $3.5m/year from UA...and we're NOT helping Uncle Phil and University of Niketown Eugene. 'nuff said.

Great for football, bad for basketball. Under Armour probably makes the best football equipment.

Their basketball shoes are average at best. Cal certainly benefited from being one of a handful of Jordan brand sponsored basketball programs.

p.s. I have to give UA and Plank (or whoever) credit for figuring out the other stuff in the deal like gear for the club sports and hooking up Cal grads with internships and jobs. That's how you give a little back and build a brand. Once those young whippersnappers bitching about TJMaxx get a whiff of a internship/job at UA, they'll STFU.

The partnership with Cal is very shrewd - cherry picking a rival of both Stanfurd and Oregon that has a bigger public and international profile and go after Nike on the West Coast and the Bay Area. You Cal fans know the deal and experience of being on the other side of the world and some person has Cal gear on and you say Go Bears! That doesn't happen with Furd or Oregon and they just don't have the same international profile.

It's nice stepping out of the shadows of Oregon and Furd on this...now it's time to shank those bastards.

Yep, Berkeley is well-known and respected world-wide. furd is just turd with another horizontal.
Very clever - and lucrative - deal for Cal and UA (eventually). Unca Phil got chop-blocked. Ouchie, Unca Phil.

I certainly will miss seeing the Jordans out there, but what tangible benefits did Cal get out of it's association with the Air Jordan brand? They certainly haven't been killing it in recruiting. What am I missing here?

Is that the same difference between
150k vs however many millions UA is contributing

Explain how Nike charging 300.00 per pair helps Cal?

Who cares about the under 45, it's the under 20 that matter for recruiting, and for them Jordan is some old dude their father used to talk about, while Curry, in his UA sneakers, is the greatest.

Win-win all around, we get rid of uncle Phil, get a lot more money, ride the new trend, and apparently we also get better looking unis to boot.

ok lets talk under 20, ur right most of them (that aren't hooping) dont know who jordan is, but why dont you look whats on their feet? or even better what they are getting up at the crack of dawn to get in line to buy..... jordan 1s 2s 3s 4s 5s 11s.....and so on. not one god damn 18 year old is doing that for steph currys. its about the shoes, not jordan/curry

Nike should have come correctly with the numbers and as well the communication

Athletic dept has been cutting to many corners these extra millions will do what Nike was unwilling to apparently

Only ? Is jordan/UA for hoops

Reservations yes

But with a coach like Martin things will balance out I'm sure of that
going4roses
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I kinda feel like the those that prefer nike for men's hoops don't understand the need for cash

This was the perfect time both football and basketball doing better/progressing

Is 150k per year vs 8 million not enough reason to say FU ?

This money is sorely needed to help continue progress of the two revenue programs I think... Cal is behind and needs to catch up cause we don't have an uncle phil

I Hope and pray stipends go up for student athletes ... Need to reflect the cost of living !!! And if they don't expect more transfers out

But how exactly did it help us? Did Jordan brand pay some $$$ to AAU coaches to funnel players to Cal? No. No. No.

Now what if extra $$$ makes it more feasible to get the UC Pres to sign off on a new practice facility? $$$ talks....
