Some people making some dumb..dumb comments about ugly uni's. Read the article.....CAL will decide how the uniforms will look.....not UA. Unlike Nike, that forced some crappy looking designs on us, UA will tailor our uniforms based on the wants of the university. Geez....some folks really need to chillax.

That's not even remotely the plan.

Under Armour's not foisting anything on Cal. Cal Athletics and the Cal fan base call the shots on this one.

This model will be built more on the traditional ND model and won't even resemble anything remotely like Maryland's. And the Roth throwback jerseys will be back for the annual Joe Roth game.

Yes!! (Re Roth jerseys)

Oh my god. calm down.

Our unis will only be ugly if we let it be ugly. If our staff, players, etc. [Cal Atx says each staff will have their own design process and will decide who gets to be involved] do not have the right vision for how we want our image to look, Under Armour will probably make it worse. UA hasn't had the quality of designers Nike and Adidas has had, and that's really want the bottom line is. Their designs in the past has been trash, but that doesn't necessarily have to stay that way. Adidas was garbage too, until about a year or two ago.

If UA really wants Cal to be the West Coast Flagship, then they need to hire or give us their best design guys to come up with not only clean throwback uniforms, but also innovative one-offs.

And for those who don't want "new" uniforms and/or "new" colors, you're sh*t out of luck, because this staff gets the need for cool stuff recruits care about. Look at the white helmet w/ the chrome grill and bear logo plastered by recruits on their trips. They're willing to experiment, and now with UA, we may actually get to implement it. As Plank said, "best way to use us is as your in-house marketing team."

Really up to Cal and UA to make it actually impressive instead of all the flexing done in this announcement about how innovative and great it is. As great as it may be for the University as a whole, on the football side, it won't mean much unless they execute the uniform and apparel well--that's what the public sees.

Sounds like we'll have a much more collaborative relationship with UA than we had with Nike. That's a good thing.

Like the UA Maryland uniforms.

Worst ever.
I was hoping UA was not behind those, but they are.
I like MD, and their traditional colors, flag, etc, but not split down the middle like this. Awful.

Like all the elite ones who've been going to FUCLA despite it being an Adidas school?

All recruits make decisions based on a number of factors

What I am saying is Nike and even more so Jordan are positive factors with recruits (and players)

that's a potentially very good thing. Cal will finally have more say in it, but it also has a lot more responsibility. each team will have its own process for how their uniforms will be made, so hopefully the football staff will get some good opinions through their former players, current players, etc.

they need to take advantage of this power.

I'm being semi facetious here, but once again; how many Sweet 16's have we been to as a Jordan brand school? I agree it was cool but this is a great deal and opportunity for the university

Clean. I like it very much. The only Nike products I've bought in twenty years is Cal Nike gear, and except for the Dry Fit hat, I don't love most of it.

With UA's emergence as a serious sports apparel brand and increased market share, you're going to see some great products hit the market soon. I know a couple of senior design and marketing guys who work for UA and they are not playing around.

For a lot of old guys on this board, those photos worked better than Viagra.

HD, in your opinion, do you think we might have lost-out on any notable recruits in the past if we had been a UA school, or any current ones? I would like to think Rabb and Brown would have still gone here, regardless, but I have no idea...

My initial feeling is that if a recruit is placing that much emphasis on the gear, enough to influence the final decision, maybe that's not a recruit best suited for this fine university. Recognizing my ignorance on this matter, maybe I don't understand the ramifications completely...

I don't give a flying fish who the unis come from. Just give us something clean and bold. Cal Blue with California Poppy Gold (NOT yellow). The trend of multiple unis has made it difficult to surf TV channels and identify teams because you never know what they're wearing. Just give me Blue and GOLD, no white, and quit worrying if the unis are pretty. Pretty is for pompom girls.

What was cool about being affiliated with Jordan?
It didn't land us Marcus Lee, for instance.

Maybe that f'd bear symbol stays ...
but the crappy font has to be covered and torn up and off everything ... disappear totally.
Bring back Kapp-era numerals and letters ... ditch the half-azzd Barbour barfy font.

Late to the party, but the switch to UA is great news. Eff the Swoosh. I always wondered why any school in the P12 besides Furd and Phil Knight U. would want to wear Nike and thereby indirectly fund UO's program. And Nike wasn't doing us any favors with their restrictions and design choices like that crappy proprietary font on the unis.

And Under Armour won't force crazy designs on us like the infamous Maryland football unis. Auburn is a UA school -- and they've kept a very traditional look.

Now that we are getting rid of Nike, maybe we can get block numbers on all CAL uniforms; Stanford has block numbers, the Raiders have block numbers, the Niners have block numbers, Green Bay has block numbers; we have crap numbers.

If I could get hold of the individual from Nike or CAL that selected these crummy looking numbers, I would ban them from ever participating in any type of uniform selection.

How will this work? Regular fans actually get a meaningful vote? Not likely. How and when exactly? Given that the student-body and younger alum generation is more tech savvy/fixated, if fans can vote it will trend to non-traditional anyway; that is, if they go by the one-fan-one-vote system, not the Superdelegate system. Megadonors (establishment superdelegates) get worked up only about alphabet soup APR, GSR, GPA, not stuff like unis. Most players lust for the flashy, creative, and non-traditional. Our coaches and chancellor are recently-hired guns from other parts of the country with little to no loyalty to our traditions. Season ticket holders will be asked about uniform preferences in ticket renewal forms and those old-fogey opinions will outweigh designers and student-athletes enamored with splash & awe? Cal is not exactly one of these stuffy private schools with loads of football tradition guiding/restraining our fashion decisions.

It's not a public vote obviously, but the athletic department seriously considers the opinions of the Cal fan base when it come to things like uniform design going into this contract, especially from the traditional look and colors department.

They'll have to balance player input with what's important to the majority of the fan base. That's their main challenge from a design standpoint, IMO, because many players prefer things like white helmets that the overwhelming majority of the Cal fan base intensely dislike. So if we see something like that, it's likely to be on a much more occasional basis.

Bottom line, there won't be some crazy redesign foisted on the Cal fan base.

Don't remember but I recall that places like tOSU, ND, Bama, $c, PedoSt, et.al. get decent recruit classes even though they wear "traditional", "old fashioned" uniforms. Preferences of HS kids seems to be more of an urban-legend-thingee perpetuated by Nike's perverse need to penalize lesser programs with crap/garbage designs while not offending major programs.
