Don't believe Nike's hype. UA has become a strong brand by countering Nike's values. Great move by Cal.
Countering Nikes values? So all their gear is made in the USA with all union adult labor with full health care and other benefits? LOL.
I don't have a problem with the $$$ at all since Nike was severely underpaying us. I also think they had a secret meeting re: our football uniforms about how to make Cal look bad with the 'bra-strap' redesign. Like how bad can we clown them, and still have them beg us for more.
Probably won't buy much more UA gear in the future myself. It's kind of strange branding right now IMO since Under Armour is named after the baselayer wicking undershirts that were really big game changer in the late 90's. And call me a traitor, but I own tons of nike apparel, like the way it looks, and will buy more in the future (their shoes suck ass though).
But to be honest, I don't care how cool they are as long as their gear doesn't fall apart or look like clown suites aka Maryland or UCLA adidas basketball zubaz. In terms of recruiting, I've always said if a recruit is swayed by the brand name of gear Cal has, he is either A) not really going to value a Cal degree as much as the next guy, and B) might be influenced by the shady AAU world that we can't control and have not done well vs the bigs anyway.
I had perused the last Nike contract at some point after the new logo came out.... I think we retain the rights to the crying bear after 2017, but nike did have a exclusive use of it for a few years right after introduction. Now whether we make a big splash in 2017 and go with a new logo on the Haas floor? Seems like a waste, but might be good for marketing. The big bear looks fine at some angles, but pretty terrible at other angles, probably due to differing lighting.
Oh the big advantage of being with UA is we'll be higher up on their food chain and get more attention to detail in all things designed. Though Nike half-assed it based on reputation alone... and come on with Oregon, Furd, and SC, we were never a priority.
