How is Leavitt not a "retread" by that criteria? He was a HC and was fired. How are guys like Taggert and other up and coming HC currently at smaller programs "retreads".

Good coaches get fired all the time. I'm all for getting a young energetic coordinator who's looking for his first HC gig, ala Tedford.

Leavitt is 60 years old, the talk of hiring him around here is absolutely nuts. This is not Steve Spurrier we're talking about here.

It's becoming trendy to give guys a shot at the next level after only a few seasons at a program (e.g. Herman, Strong). These guys aren't winning with their players. Sustaining a program is tough.

I'm beginning to feel like we are trapped in a loveless marriage here.

Haha the love for Dykes ended about 14 months ago.

Also apparently Mike Rhule is in the mix for the Oregon job, so says Mike Bellotti.

Who cares how old he is - he can get the job done.

Had a better record at S. Florida than Tedford (CAL's winningest all time coach) had here. Think about that.

He was Jim Harbaugh's linebackers coach during his 4 year stint in the NFL - so he has NFL chops.

Now he's a finalist for coordinator of the year award as DEFENSIVE coordinator for Colorado.

Did I mention he's DEFENSIVE-minded?

1. Extremely successful college coach - CHECK
2. NFL experience - CHECK
3. Top rated defensive coordinator in CFB - CHECK

In all seriousness, what more would you want in our next coach?

Anyone more qualified wouldn't give us the time of day.

I really enjoy Texas. Houston.... not so much.

His qualifications are not the issue (and let's forget about how his tenure at South Florida ended), but how long can we expect a 60-year old head coach to stick around? At least we won't have to worry about him leaving for another program.

well said. I'm hoping that all this drama maybe opened the purse strings to buy a good DC, and staff bonuses. Notice I said hoping, Cal fans are always hoping.

Why he's just a young whippersnapper compared to Bill Snyder at KSU.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Snyder

I also remember how Mike Leach's tenure at Texas Tech ended, didn't stop WSU from hiring him to turn their dumpster fire around.

Again, we're fricking CAL - every coach we can get is going to have some downside potential, otherwise they'd be coaching Alabama or Ohio State.

First things first ...

We need to spend $2M on a search firm to come up with a list of coaches that have already been mentioned multiple times in this thread.
But, perhaps before we spend that money, we should spend $500K on a separate firm to properly screen the potential search firms that we might consider.

On a less sarcastic note, and because there must be a mathematical formula that can provide the solution to a coaching question, I figured why not take a look at which schools have done well in the past couple of years and then look at those staffs. (I suppose as to looking at the staffs of schools that have done really poorly)

I took the 2016 and 2015 total offensive rankings and totaled the numbers for each school out of the 128 in D1 (#1 in the category gets a score of "1", #2 of "2" and so on, then simply totaled up the four numbers and rank ordered them)
The ranking isn't that surprising, but maybe a little ...
I get the following as the top 15 "teams" considering combined 2015/2016 offensive/defensive rankings:

1. Clemson
2. Alabama
3. Ohio State
4. Louisville
5. Boise State
6. Appalachian State
7. Southern Miss
8. Washington
9. Florida State
10. Georgia Southern
11. Michigan
12. San Diego State
13. Oklahoma
14. Toledo
15. Mississippi State

Then I perused the staffs of these schools, looking for some interesting candidates or others that caught my eye, and also excluding ones that I thought were unlikely based on factors that we can debate. Generally good, relatively younger coordinators were of interest, although not all were necessarily that young.

Among some that I thought were interesting:
- Greg Schiano - OSU (yeah, probably too high profile, and assume there would be a pay challenge, but if Rivera or others are being thrown around, why not Schiano?)
- Lonnie Galloway - Louisville (yeah, not sure about the academic fit for Cal, but great reviews as a recruiter, a wide receivers guy, and if you look at what Louisville has done the past two years, why not?)
- Bryan Harsin - Boise State (on lots of lists already)
- Brent Venables - Clemson (on the opposite coast, but appears to be a strong coordinator on a highly rated program, strong recruiter, young, etc)

At least some additional names to throw against a wall for discussion here, based on some initial data mining and rationale, and at least a few that I hadn't seen before.
Probably not affordable given the schools, but as a head coaching position for some of these who haven't had this before, maybe it isn't as far fetched.

Gave me something to do for the past hour if nothing else, and look how much money we've saved the athletic department in the process ...

Venables I don't think is going to come to Cal. He's making 700k and he's turned down HC jobs, even at his alma mater. He likes being a DC I think, and he's probably going to be Clemson's HC when Dabo moves onto Bama.

Nobody worth a darn is coming to Cal unless they are in the PAC 12 or a non big 5 conference
