I haven't yet read the link you provided, but hearing his presser, it was truly heart-felt. It moved me, and I don't even know the guy. He seems of very high character alright; and players as well as other coaches, and fans too will bond very well with such a personality. Bottomline is what happens on the field of course, but he seems like a damn good man as well, and I like that...

I mean if you don't know Eastern Washington the team that beat Oregon State a few years ago, almost beat Washington, and this best Washington State ... I mean if you don't know any coaches outside of Dykes and Tedford you will probably have to look up every coach.

That presser by EWU tells you a lot about how highly they think of him. Very classy.

Given the realities of the economics of the Cal football program, Cal will likely be limited to hiring "step-up" candidates like Wilcox and Baldwin. They are both terrific hires.

Is this Plan A type hire?

Excited about this and the other hires announced to date. Sounds like more good news to come also.

Baldwin and Greatwood both well-respected coaches with strong track records. I like how Wilcox is building up the staff thus far.

Everyone was predicting that our staff (including the HC) would be a complete dumpster fire, for three reasons: (1) the timing of Dykes' firing (2) our limited funds (3) the fact that we are Cal and are the rotten flattened fruit at the bottom of the dumpster in the "new improved" Pac-12 (which is "new and improved" because UW, Oregon, USC, and furd have rapidly adapted to the new era while we sit around with our thumbs up our.....)

So if our new staff turns out to be really good...

Living in Montana and following the Big Sky Conference this is a great hire. Young and proven in a tough conference, Baldwin will soon prove himself at the next level as well.

Its obvious that Wilcox has a plan and has been thinking about this for awhile. Compare this to the Sonny shtshow hire.

This is true. He's been on the HC radar for a few years, and like any smart coach he's got a short list already vetted.

In his presser Baldwin said he had other offers that just didn't feel right, but Cal IS right. Do you know what that portends for Cal?? His emotion in the presser is also important to note - he deeply cares about his players and their fans. This is going to be the start of something big!!!

Wow, this is a grand slam hire. DrDanger may have held us in suspense, but he ultimately delivered if he undersold us :-). This is one of the best pieces of news for us in quite some time.

The best thing about this hire is that we now know we've got smarts on both sides of the ball (Baldwin on offense + Wilcox on defense). If today's announcement had been that we had made a big DC hire instead of a big OC hire, we'd still be thinking "yeah, but does this mean we'll lose a bunch of 13-10 games if that Wilner guy is right and it takes years to rebuild our offense?"

PS - Wilner may want to retract that statment now. And, yes, we'd still like a great DC hire if Wilcox has one up his sleeve.

And yeah, while it's the smallest of sample sizes, both Cal and EWU played at Washington State last season. EWU won. Cal was blown out of the water by 5 touchdowns.

I like the hire a lot.

So does Beau bring a bunch of his Offensive staff with him a la Sonny, or does Wilcox want mostly non-EWU guys for the openings? I know Greatwood has already been tapped for OL.

I couldn't be happier with this hire. A smart defensive minded HC and a smart OC.... This program is on the rise, and if anybody deserves it, it's Cal. Williams took a chance and got rid of someone who didn't wan to be here and so far solid, quality hires. VERY excited. Go Bears!

Of course, Wulff was also successful at EWU, less so in the PAC.

Baldwin had a better winning % against the PAC 12 at EWU than Dykes had at Cal. I think he'll be fine.
