His record is fantastic, and yet he has not been given any considering for openings in the FBS. Probably not an attractive candidate at first glance because his only coaching experience has been at the FCS level. This would be his first FBS job.

As poorly run as Cal football has been, why would San Jose State hire Oregon State's WR coach as new their head coach without going after someone like Baldwin?

Brent Brennan was an assistant coach for San Jose State previously from 2005 to 2010.

That's probably why he hasn't been looked at for Power 5 jobs. None of the P5 schools in the NW would be able to survive just recruiting the NW.
Baldwin was a finalist for the Nevada HC job which was recently filled. If he comes to Cal, he will make more than the new HC at Nevada.
This is a fantastic hire. Like it alot. I wasn't a fan of the timing of the Wilcox hiring but if his staff is assembled with quality guys like this, I'm all in.
Hoping it is true, Baldwin would be a stellar pick. Apparently Brock Huard is treating it as a done deal:

I did not see this hire coming. I always figured Wilcox would be more WCO oriented. Baldwins offense seems more Air Raidish, however he does seem to like to run the zone read a fair bit. He's also not averse to using a tight end. Like it. His offense really is a mixed bag of a lot of things..quite unique.

Wait there's a presser in 15 minutes? Sounds like it's not going to be Baldwin then. Can't imagine the school would hold a presser to announce his contract extension the day before he's hired at Cal. I also wouldn't think they would hold a presser to announce he's going to another school right? Wouldn't the hiring school announce it first?
Could go either way, he's been there for over a decade, so this is a major major deal for them.

If he was interviewing recently at Nevada, it means he's ready to step up. This would be a great pay upgrade as well as an opportunity to prove himself in bigtime football -- a great stepping stone.

I LOVE EWU's offense. What he's done with very little talent is really impressive. Combine that offense with Wilcox overseeing the D, and you're looking at a REALLY good team. Don't know how so many teams missed on him.
Great hire - excellent offensive coach and works hard on the recruiting trail. Could see him getting a P5 HC job in 2-3 years if he does well at Cal (I think he will).

He talked about how he's had opportunities over the past few years, but it never felt right until now.
Regardless of how true that is, nice way of balancing respect for where he is while explaining why he's leaving.

I think I've watched about 4 game against Pac-12 teams, and his offense worked quite well.
Looks like about 76 plays per game last year, so no frenetic pace, at least based upon last season. The run / pass balance, again, not that bad at 42% runs, 58% pass...

Totally happy with this. If we do anything as good with DC, I'll be ecstatic.
A nice kicker - no buyout in his recent contract extension. Besides what we pay him, it won't cost anything to bring him over.
So the question now is who the DC is.
