FWIW I doubt a different AD would have effected my attitude towards Cal very much.
But that doesn't mean I disagree with you Shocky

Cutting through all,the noise, it appears the big donors are not happy and this means Williams time is limited. How does he function without returning phone calls and texts? Schmoozing is part of the job. Was this his pattern when he was assistant AD? Does he have a management or business degree?

Prediction: If this year's basketball and football seasons are less than successful, then say goodbye. Meanwhile, change your management style.

Sometimes stereotypes have a basis in reality: Finance guys like Mike should never be given operational roles. They should stick to finance.

Not surprising. We've been trying to paint the cloud around this hire as typical changing of the guard stuff. It's not. Wyking may turn out to be a good hire, but folks clearly don't have trust in Mike, and that's his fault. That speaks to his management and relationship building style.

A basketball hire, reportedly without a search, which picks the local guy on staff. I can't even imagine Oregon State doing that.

Supposing all that has been said on the other thread about MW f*cking up is true, i find it funny we didn't hear more about these incompetencies until sh*t really hit the fan.

I have been hearing about his communicatiion style, or lack of communication, for several years now. The problems with ignoring people get accentuated when there are serious decisions that need to be made. The long simmering unhappiness then surfaces. Shocky's comments are right on.

Have to disagree with the timing. You have a Chancellor about to make critical decisions on sports programs, she has no background in the area (and doesn't appear to have any interest in engaging sports donors), doesn't know the business issues (like Sandy Barbour) and tends to only listen to insular Berkeley. Mike does understand the business side, and has a history with this Chancellor that allows him access. A new AD from outside Cal RIGHT NOW would be catastrophic IMO.

Mike ultimately will be judged by his hires in the revenue sports (like most ADs), and that will take some time to determine. If the revenue sports win, most sports donors will be happy, even if Mike doesn't hold their hands as much as they like.

I'm actually in favor of an AD not using a search firm. It's like hiring 2 people to do the same job. That's the job of the AD. A competent AD should know who to hire especially in the revenue sports.

Yup. I don't think most of us feel such a sense of entitlement that if our calls and emails get unanswered we immediately start calling for the AD's head. He's got a big job to do and a limited amount of time to do it. It's the reason I keep my personal communication with him to a minimum. As a consequence I've only sent him three emails since he go the job, and one of those was to just congratulate him and thank him for taking this on for Cal. I've never received a response to any of my messages. I'm actually not even sure if anyone monitors his email as I know dozens of donors who have sent him messages and never gotten a reply. I can't really wrap my head around this or understand how the department thinks this behavior is ok. There is literally no other major athletic department on the planet that would act like this.

After the bullshit season ticket holders got from reps regarding the Marshawn Lynch bobbleheads and how reps compared what they were doing to Golden State Warriors promotions, pretty obvious that the entire line of communications in the AD is totally fucked.

If it's any consolation, MW doesn't communicate with the small donors either. It's not just the whales that are being ignored.

I was not in favor of MW being the permanent AD. Not sure I am even now.
I emailed a response to the general email all of us received....I imagine it went to ALL emails the dept has, or at least all season ticket holders of all the Cal sports.

I complained about a sport/vb that has been slipping drastically....3 weeks or so later I received a phone call from the Ath Dept asking about this sport and my opinion.
I was so flabbergasted, I didn't recall that I had sent the email at first.

There is another general email update from the Ath Dept that arrived earlier this week.
I think someone there is beginning to get the message that more communication is needed.

and no, I am not a donor. I live on mostly nickels. Retired sr citizen. Just buy season tix to one sport/vb.
Use my out of town bro's fb ticket/Cal alum.... when he can't fly in for the game from Denver.

I have high hopes for football. No clue about basketball coach but there is some good background there with Wyking and Cal has just hired an alum, as one of the asst coaches this morning.

I think it is somewhat duplicative, but the background and reference history is something I am not sure the AD & staff are really prepared to handle. But since he went through process relatively recently and probably had a heads up and time to percolate the decision ahead of time it doesn't bother me that Mike didn't hire on a consultant for the search.

I know if my profession they usually take 30-40% of one year's salary, not sure what headhunters get for HCs.

Mike seems like such a pompous arrogant guy that maybe in the end not listening to us is what we need. I mean maybe he heard that the big donors favored Pasternak and if so, good for him. I hated both of his coaching decisions initially and thought they were both C+ hires at best . Now I give Wilcox an A_ and Wking a 'B' and rising. I rather a pompous A-hole who gets results than a smoocher who will continue us on the plight that we were on.
That said, you can't ignore people who donate millions. Thats just basic.

Again, the guy is just like he looks.

An A and a B hire? Wow, what changed your mind?

To me, Ron Rivera would have been an A hire. Wilcox? For me, it is a D+ (and that is up from my initial F because the staff he has built seems good on paper).

Both hires were head scratchers. I really hope they both kill it and bring Cal to the promised land. It is concerning to me that neither coach was in demand by any other schools (Wilcox was supposedly tied to the SJSU opening, but even that wasn't confirmed).

Cal is in a highly competitive conference for both football and basketball. When you make offers to two head coaches with zero head coaching experience and no other schools competing for said hires, it doesn't give you much assurance.

Far too much risk, in my opinion, with both hires.

Usually, the purpose of a search firm in these instances is to...

a) manage the interview process and give "plausible deniability" ("I never interviewed at Cal." "Cal has never even approached me about the job." "We never offered the job to ___.")

b) perhaps uncover candidates that the AD didn't know about, or didn't know were possible candidates (the search firm might have identified Cuonzo three yrs ago... goodness knows nobody on this board did)

It would be interesting to know MW's reasoning on this. I'd email him with the question, but...

Yeah this is my issue with him not using a search firm because I feel like if he had, he would have at least been given a name or two that on paper were better than Wyking. Then just come back and say, we will really like Wyking better, his continuity, his work with our bigs etc if you still want to hire him. It's possible he didnt want to challenge his own biases since we've already had Wyking for two years.

exactly, williams enjoys conversing with his director of development jeremy wang who is unknown to almost all donors...sat with other meb donors during 3 games at the pac 12 tnt, jeremy never came over to say hello just sat with the athletic department staff in better seats than those given to meb donors, amazing

and that's not the 1st time wang & his team have taken better seats than meb donors, it's another vacation for the crew

Pehaps a liason/task force(with teeth/hustler-hungry mind state) that directly deals with donors and the AD(dept) and the HC football/basketball could be helpful.
