Given that everyone at the FBS level also signed their first early class, the headline is rather awkward.

I think this two tier signing structure might prove beneficial for a program like Cal. In the past few years we have struggled to assemble a incoming class that uses all of our available scholarships. Even this year, much better though it is, we are well short of the targeted 22-25 class size. This additional five weeks will let Cal chase additional players to fill the incoming class size. Will they be at the same sort of 3-star average we see from the initial 18 recruits? Probably not. But you you rather have an incoming class of 18 3-stars (ave) or a class of 18 3 stars and another 7 2 stars? Clearly the latter is preferred.

You may prefer the latter example in your post but I would be strongly against filling out a class with two stars. I would hope (and expect) Wilcox to continue recruiting the best players possible and if he only finds 4-5 willing to sign with Cal, then he should put the rest of the available scholarships in his pocket.

Never settle. The guys that kill you are not the one's that sign elsewhere, but rather those you sign who do not produce.......

I think there will be little to no settling with the remaining schollies. Even saying "little," I mean in fans' eyes, because I don't think Wilcox will settle on anyone he doesn't have confidence in.

Confirms what I believe Wilcox would do........

You mention 4 early enrollees, but only point out 3 of them (Friis, Anusiem, and Isara). Who's the fourth?

And thanks for all the great coverage, as always!

Thanks, and sorry -the 4th is Doughty.

Cool, because Doughty sounds like he will be in the mix for playing time at ILB, right?

Moraga, I know it's early, but are there certain of these guys you see as getting onto the field on offense or defense in 2018?

Yeah, Doughty for sure. Also, Isara, Craig, Cindric, McCastles, Adams, Remigio, Maldonado and Zellers are other guys I'd expect to likely be in the rotation.

Doughty and Isara will both be in the mix for playing time.

Why Adams, but not Brown?

Isn't one of our 2 stars a low rated LB but the #1 rated long snapper, which is what he was recruited for? Of course rather have all 5 stars but there is some play in the numbers. As Bill Walsh used to say about draftees when he was with the 49ers (no quotes from when he was with those other people) "It's not where they're picked, it's how they play." Which for many 2 stars is not well, but for individuals you never know

Just my opinion but I think Adams might play earlier because he's a more dynamic back.

It could be that Brown could be looked at as maybe a bigger, stronger, between the tackles, short distance specialist early but my bet's on Adams seeing the field first.

Yes, Zellers is a longsnapper and I wouldn't be surprised to see him be a 4 year starter or close to it.

Thanks. I thought they'd always had early signing before just not a lot of participation.

Our 2017 offensive MVP came to Cal as a walk-on. We have former walk-ons who became All-Pros in the NFL

They allowed high school students who could enroll early to sign in December, but you are correct about how few signers there were.

This year is the first time that players signing in December won't graduate high school until May/June of the following year.

I don't care a flying fish about number of stars. Some 5 stars are ego centric and can be a cancer on a team because of their wish to be "a star", complaining if they don't get playing time, carries etc. Some 2 stars may not have matured or achieved their potential in H.S., but a good coach will spot potential and if the young man has the right attitude and is a good fit for the culture, he can be coached up (walk on success noted in a previous post). Just give me the men who want to be at Cal, want to be a part of the team, and are willing to give all they have to be the best they can be for the team's benefit as well as their own. It that person is a 2 star, get him. If he's a 5 star and is going to be a whiner and complainer, let him to go $C or oregon.
