i didn't like the penalty on our DB for the superman pose last week. I felt it wasn't unsportman-like and just having fun in a college football GAME.

I have a much different opinion about taunting.

of course an Oregon WR taunted a SJ State DB as he was running into the end zone. No flag.

if you care to suffer through the ad, you can see it here (and get a preview of our next game...it's going to get harder from here) ...

I personally thought it was kind of funny and cool to hear a ref say, "striking a pose". Someone should incorporate a clip of that into a music video.

I know what you mean about opinions on player celebrations. But from what I understand of Miami back in 90 or 91 and the clampdown that started and has continued since then, I agree with the current rules.

Hoop Dreams,

This isn't about having fun. This is about looking like an *******, drawing attention to yourself at the expense of the team.

It's an expression of being selfish and being about yourself. It's copying the *******s in professional football.

so the superman pose was worse than the oregon player taunting the DB he just beat?
...and this clip didn't show it, but the DB got upset at the oregon WR taunt

my point is I get and agree with the penalty for taunting (e.g. like the oregon WR, or a player standing above someone he just decked), but I thought the superman pose was fine. But at the very least, the refs need to call it consistently

I agree. To me it was totally worth the 15 yards to hear the official say "strike a pose"

Yes, the referee's announcement made me laugh. But that was a horrible call. It wasn't an over-the-top celebration, he wasn't in the face of an opposing player, it was just a quick.... pose. If they're going to call THAT a penalty, then they could probably make the same call on 50% of the touchdowns scored in the NCAA.

Laird's book-reading thing could be called "striking a pose", Are they gonna call that?!?
"Fifteen yard penalty for striking a pose and shamelessly advocating reading!"

"Unsportsmanlike conduct penalty on # 37 of the defense...he told the opposing player to 'talk to the hand.' Fifteen yards; automatic first down. Media timeout."

Anyone that thinks there is anything wrong with taunting, posing or celebrating is just a crabby old person out of touch with the times. Decorum, courtesy and manners are dead! Yeah!!

We need to play the game and leave the extracurricular nonsense to the nutballs in the pros. I could see this coming after the first game. Several instances where there was excessive celebration after a tackle, or a catch, or a block, or a pick, or whatever. Several instances of taunting, standing over a tackled opponent, etc. We can't afford 15-yard pointless penalties. Wilcox needs to rein this in completely. He'll gain respect for doing so, and we're going to need total focus against Oregon. This last game was way sloppier than it should have been.

I pine for the days when if you celebrated after burning Jack Tatum on a route you woke up in the hospital three days later asking the doctor if you were in a car accident.....or you posed after hitting a home run off Bob Gibson and during your next at bat you took a 100 mph fastball in the face...and in both cases the officials took no action because they felt you had it coming.

Well, those days aren't coming back. There is some justice in having to stand up for yourself after you "strike a pose." And in the baseball case, you didn't get hit because you celebrated a home run. Often times, you got hit just for hitting a home run, which is ridiculous. The pitcher should pick up a bat and beat himself up for throwing a bad pitch.

Sandy Koufax steadfastly refused to throw at a batter under any circumstances, no exceptions. However, he was willing to have a teammate's back even if it involved going unarmed into a fray against a man with a deadly weapon in his hand.

No difference between posing and taunting: both a form of unattractive gloating over success against an opponent. This "gloating culture" is not just in football, you should see girls high school volleyball sometime If you want to see some obnoxious histrionics.

"Gloating culture" is now as American as apple pie. It's right up there with conspicuous consumption, flashing bling, flaunting wealth and ceaselessly declaring ourselves the greatest country in the world.

I remember singing the verse in "You're A Grand Old Flag" that identifies the US as the country where "there's never a boast or brag". Now, being humble about our nation makes one a squishy lib'rul, if not a downright "commie socialist". Calling attention to oneself is now our national norm.

The superman pose carries the message,"what are you gonna do about it." The cocked head compounds it. Don't pretend that it doesn't. It's asking for a brawl or a busted knee on the next defenseless player.

Yeah, I'm old and sometimes cranky, but you never saw that kind of thing 30 years ago and the stands were just as full, maybe fuller. 'Course, there wasn't the lure of NFL $$$ as there is today.

Gloating culture is not universal; but it is highly visible. Where is Walt Frazier as a role model when we need him.

Based on your handle, I'm considerably younger, though still old-school on this one. Players should be about team and not about drawing attention to themselves. I'm sure Coach Wilcox shares our "grumpy old men" perspective on this and conveyed that to his player, who undoubtedly earned some extra calisthenics for his antics.

Same. And it pains me that's not the case anymore.

BTW, I don't know if you remember, but I always enjoyed having you come over to the mic or at the bonfire rally. You, Bobby, Jaimie, Phil... all terrific dudes. And of course Natalie. She was quite a broad (in the greatest Sinatra sense of the word). DId you know there's a plaque on a seat in the rooting section with her name on it.

Holy Crap! Hell must be frozen over since I find myself in agreement with Uthaithani!

I'd been lurking in the forums, but generally in opposition to pretty much anything Uthaithani posted (I even started to think he was another moniker for Amy).

I did not know there was a plaque. She was amazing, and I miss her great joy on the boards. I gotta check that out on the 29th.

Of course, I remember your kindness. You upheld the great tradition of welcoming former yell leaders/micmen back to the boards to keep the Cal traditions alive. Like you, I welcomed Ben Dixon, Jamie, Bobby, Natalie, Phil, et al to the boards. They knew how to rev up a crowd and took a lot of pressure off of us. Unfortunately, the current culture does not embrace that value.

This whole quasi-militaristic "team first, no taunting, Coach should shut it down and punish em for it" thing rubs me the wrong way. Football is a game. It should be fun. Let the 19 year olds do their Super Man poses. God knows I would if I were playing.

IMO, it's a dumb rule that's only inconsistently enforced. Should just get rid of it.

But I'm under 30 and the degree to which you get upset about taunting seems to vary greatly with age.

Agreed! A good example is the Golden State Warriors. Steve Kerr teeters on organized chaos, and encourages his players to be themselves, as long as it plays a positive role in winning. Kerr openly accepts Draymond Green's antics because those same antics also fuel the team.

If Wilcox is building a culture of great defense and the player's "superman pose" fuels the fire for the defense, so be it. I'd rather the defense celebrate "excessively" by some of your standards and continue to win, than to suck the life and passion out by being overly restrictive.

the problem isn't the action per se. it's that it inevitably leads to a brawl, which leads to ejections, suspensions and sometimes arrest.

I don't care if it sucks the life out of the defense or not. Or whether it shows more class to not do it? I agree it's a stupid rule. BUT------
If "striking a pose" gets you a 15 yard penalty then we need to stop doing it.
The penalty moved Cal back from mid-field at a time we were trying to burn the clock. Losing 15 yards at an important moment could have been disastrous.

And back to my point earlier in the thread about the Old Days and athletes like Jack Tatum and Bob Gibson, had Draymond tried his "antics" against guys like Wilt or Bob Lanier, it would be the last time he displayed the antics and hopefully he would still be physically able to finish the season.

No problem with it at all. If that offends you, then find another sport. How dare a kid make a pose during a game where he could end up permanently disabled for your viewing pleasure. Just like I have to accept that it's not 1995, you need to accept it's not 1955.

Jaylinn Hawkins, know that the vast majority of young alumni and students think your pose was awesome!

And you probably hate basketball's 3-point line and the fast paced offense.

There's nothing wrong with striking a pose after a big play. He wasn't striking a pose to taunt the opposing team. He was simply striking a pose with his teammates around him. NCAA tried to crack down on TD celebrations a few years back, and that was a terrible decision. Kids are celebrating after TDs again and no one gets flagged for that. If Laird can read an imaginary book after a TD, Hawkins can strike a pose after an interception.
