The coffeehouses of Berkeley and the campus cafeteria were not a place where the girls looking for a husband hung out, and there were plenty of girls hanging out in them, and while there they discussed political ideas, other cultures, music, art, writing, and reading. SFCityBear, I hate to break it to you, but girls now attend school not just to meet boys. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising to find out that most Cal coeds actually attend Cal primarily to develop their minds in the pursuit of higher education, with developing skills for the job market as a close second. In fact, even during my college days, my female classmates were more interested in earning a B.A./B.S. than a Mrs.
Maybe things were different in your time. Maybe they weren't. Either way, to insinuate that girls now attend college (especially Cal!) to meet guys is misguided (if not downright sexist).
My comment in this thread was tongue-in-cheek, and I guess you missed that. You read way, way too much into my comment, if you think I was insinuating anything. You are making some vast generalizations about the women of the studentbody, which are not accurate. We are talking about the football team here, and football recruits. That is about 60 players, and only a couple dozen stars, that is starters, that are recruited by multiple schools. Are you telling me that nowadays, those 60 players can't find 60 gals on campus in the vast Cal studentbody to connect with and become boyfriend and girlfriend? I hate to break it to you, but even with our declining birthrate, our youth more and more unwilling to marry, that there are no Cal women who still don't find the ultra-masculine football player attractive? Football players are hunks, and cheerleaders are foxes (or they ought to be). One of us is pretty nave, with all due respect, if you think among the thousands of coeds at Cal, there are not 50 who dig hunks. That is all HTP and others are saying, recruit some foxes, and the studs will come. Bob Dylan sang it in a song once. President Kennedy wanted the country to grow. Dylan said, "I'll tell you what will make the country grow, Mr. President. Brigitte Bardot. Sophia Loren. Anita Ekberg. More of them and the country will grow." Or something like that. I hope the Cal coed will not entirely abandon normal sexual attraction for developing her mind and getting job skills. If we are going to survive, we need families and children.
On a personal note, I was not a good athlete. I was accepted to MIT, Cal Tech, and Cal. I was unable to get a scholarship or much of a loan. My parents were lower middle class. I chose to go to Cal, because of the much lower costs. But even if I had the money to afford MIT or Cal Tech, I still would have chosen Cal, because other things being equal, Cal had more women than either MIT or Cal Tech.
Finally, you call me out for being sexist. Were my comments sexist? Of course. The entire thread is sexist, except for you, perhaps. Can't you see that? It is a thread meant to be fun, not particularly serious. I'm sorry you took offense. There was no intent to offend, only to be humorous. Peace, brother.

Dear Helltopay,
I've been "slammed" by folks who were much better at doing so than you. Seriously, your comments elicit little more from me than pity. I can't imagine how it must be to feel that the world has passes you by entirely and you are not only out of touch but also irrelevant. How scared and fearful you must be at a wold that no longer seems to have a place for you. Truly, I am sorry for you.
If it means anything to you, I'll say a prayer for you. I mean that seriously. I'll pray for God to alleviate your fears and fill you with the courage to find a new place in the world. For the desire and ability to continue learning and expanding your horizons. For God to comfort you.

I watched a couple of the Bama games at the Bama bar in NYC as one of my colleagues is a Bama grad. They say they're the most notoriously liberal campus now in the SEC, due to the relatively high % of out of state students in Tuscaloosa these days. Apparently, they even have the largest lgbt student population in the region.
In a probably ineffective attempt to bring this thread back to, well... Make This Thread Great Again, or some such thing, I will say that based on personal observation at close range (i.e. less than 2 yards), the hottest TCU cheer/spirit gal was not in either the cheerleading or showgirl (that is what they call their dance team) squads. Left-wing propaganda may sound better to you than right-wing propaganda, but they are both in the business of manipulating minds. SFCityBear, first let me say that though I sometimes disagree with you, I truly do respect you. I am grateful to you for posting about things in Cal's past if which I was unaware or had no personal knowledge.
In my reply to you, I hope you didn't take it as anything other than a (hopefully gentle) notice that many (most?) moder Cal coeds are more interested in pursuing higher education than boys. I honestly have no idea when you attended Cal and have no idea what the prevailing mindset of the coeds at Cal was like then. I would also like to point out that even though many (most?) modern Cal coeds are educationally-inclined, some friends who attended other institutions informed me that many (most?) if the coeds there attended with the objective of getting married (or as they out it, "ring by spring").
That said, I wasn't quite sure whether you were being facetious with your prior comment. Unfortunately, as you know, humor doesn't always come across in the written word. This is especially true when writing for those who are unfamiliar with one's sense of humor. Again, if I misconstrued your comments (and took them seriously when you meant them not to be), I apologize. To help prevent such misunderstandings in the future, may I recommend adding a winky face or some other similar emoji to show your comment (or portion thereof) was not intended seriously? Alternatively, may I suggest you include some sort of editor's note or offset to indicate tone (e.g., "*sarcasm*," "*tongue-in-cheek*")?
Incidentally, I agree that it's a shame this thread has been derailed by politics. That was definitely not my intent. Rather, as stated above, I merely wanted to notify/advise you that many (most?) Cal coeds were not interested in finding a mate as much as they ate in furthering their own education.
One final note, as much as we tend to think that football is played by "manly men," of which the stereotype used to be that they are all virile heterosexuals, it ahould be remembered that some football players are also gay (including former Cal lineman Ryan O'Callaghan). There is nothing to suggest that being gay makes a man any less manly or virile. Nor anything to suggest that being gay makes anyone less capable of playing football. Sinilarly, I doubt that there's anything to suggest that being interested in hot women makes a player better. With that in mind, I doubt that all of Cal's football recruits/players are interested in "hot" women (regardless of whether they are cheerleaders).
Regardless, I do hope to read more of your posts in the future. Again, I am grateful for your posts (even (or especially) those with positions/opinions that differ from mine).

I'll just say it - KNOCK OFF the left wing propaganda B.S. talk. It's utterly ignorant and stupid Fox News regurgitation. My question about the word "consituationsl" was a genuine one. It wasn't a simple spelling error. It seemed like a blending together of parts of two words, "Con stitutiona l" and" situations". I figured it was due to his mindset at the time, which was, with all due respect, a little hysterical.

I too enjoyed reading this, and the previous comments about make-up and too much of it. Make-up is something a woman or girl uses to make herself look her best, or look better at least. Some women over-do it. Some women use none at all, and I'll get to that in a minute. In any case, make-up can be and is used by many women to attract men. It is a way of manipulating men, if done right, for some men, maybe even most men. It is an equalizer, because it gives the not-so-good-looking girl more of a chance than she had without it, in the playing field of the game of life where girls try to attract men, and the good looking girls usually get more of the fellas to pay attention to them. Tragic for some, but until we become more enlightened, that is how it is.sp4149 said:Or Granddaughter, My late wife attended LSU and graduated with an engineering degree and worked for the Navy as an Environmental Engineer. She spent over two hours a day putting on makeup. Drove me crazy, but it was the culture/environment where she grew up in a small town next to Baton Rouge. After twenty years of marriage we managed to get her make-up time down to 45 minutes and her 'tools' didn't need their own suitcase. Without makeup she was more attractive than any of the women I met in Cal's College of Engineering, there weren't that many back then and many of the Cal students were barely groomed and rarely clean. Until you have lived with one of these Southern girls you can get yourself in plenty of trouble suggesting their make-up is excessive.Troll said:
Just remember boys you are gawking at someone's daughter.........
Fast forward 20 years, all three granddaughters are semi-athletic and competitive. The oldest likes soccer but it is too much work and sweat. She inherited most of my wife's make-up and tools. Perfect make-up is not compatible with soccer, she preferred to be the most photographed girl in high school. The middle one was a bit more out of shape and decided to be a flag-twirler in high school and get good grades for college. Then LSU raised it's tuition to nearly $ 10,000 a year so after the first year she dropped out of LSU and she joined the Marines is now in much better shape to use that GI bill and now looks like she is twelve (makeup not a major part of a Marine's duty uniform). And then there is the youngest when her grandmother died she wasn't wearing make-up, but she started cheerleader training when she was ten and each year the squad she was on got better and eventually won a couple of national competitions and each years she wore more and more make-up. She now wears more than her sisters. Her mother had set her up to earn a college cheerleading scholarship. Problem was that she liked cheer better than school. So after graduating high school last year she's working odd jobs until she is old enough to become a stewardess.
Now I think the granddaughters are more attractive wearing less make-up. But Lord the rest of the family incessantly comments on Facebook how beautiful they are. it would be suicide to tell a well armed host of
trump worshipers that they are mistaken. "Too much make-up?" them's fightin' words...

When I was young, I started a correspondence with Charles McCabe, and he was gracious and friendly to a young guy who wanted to try his hand at writing. He had a book published on his thoughts about the fairer sex, a collection of columns, entitled, "Tall Girls are Grateful" He thought short girls could be like little Napoleons. In my limited experience I'd have to agree. He also said if you ever get the urge to find a woman, marry and settle down, that you should leave town immediately, head up into the mountains to a cabin, and stay there alone with yourself and your thoughts until the urge depleted itself.bearister said:dajo9 said:

Brilliant SF Chronicle columnist Charles McCabe used Freud's term, the Madonna|Wh@re Complex, but then again he was an off the charts misogynist. The Rainier Ale guzzling old sot sure could write, though.

These motherfkers are destroying American democracy and institutions and you're talking about left wing stuff? Seriously, you are part of the problem. You're talking basic Cold War Warrior talking points while ignoring the conservative movements kowtowing to the damn Russkies. Just stupid AF.
Conservatives have sat on their hands and helped push the U.S. towards authoritarianism and fascism...while saying this? And you have the f'n gall to call out Left Wing stuff...GTFO.
A year of unprecedented deception: Trump averaged 15 false claims a day in 2018
15 LIES a DAY and you're calling out the left?
Respecting your elders have limits, and you're proof.
Been there as well. I had a long time girlfriend who spent two hours a day looking natural. Naturally I had no idea until I witnessed it. I also told my future wife that she didn't need to wear so much makeup in the office to still be better groomed than anyone else. That delayed our relationship by months. She was a new employee struggling to live in the Bay Area and her monthly make-up expense was her largest expense other than rent. Trying to be helpful can be hazardous. We were married for five years before I was allowed to see herSFCityBear said:I too enjoyed reading this, and the previous comments about make-up and too much of it.

Now I think the granddaughters are more attractive wearing less make-up. But Lord the rest of the family incessantly comments on Facebook how beautiful they are. it would be suicide to tell a well armed host of
trump worshipers that they are mistaken. "Too much make-up?" them's fightin' words...
...
... My roommate and I were starved, when two hours later she emerged, looking like she had no makeup on at all. (the breakfast was pathetic she did not know how to scramble an egg. I went into the bathroom, and her toolbox was still open. I looked inside and there were over a hundred little tubes of creams and things. I guess the proper combination of all those colors and thicknesses, is what gave her the "Look at me. I'm beautiful, I don't need to wear makeup" look.
One word of advice: Don't ever, ever tell a girl she is wearing too much makeup. And don't ever ever tell a girl she might want to try using a little makeup. Either one of those statements will get you at least a long freeze-out, maybe a big fight, and maybe lose you a girlfriend. As a supervisor, I once had some female employees. One of them wore excessive makeup. She came into my office one morning to ask my advice. She said she thought she was attractive, and could make a good companion and provide a good home for a man, but she had a lot of trouble meeting men. The conversation dragged on, and I had work to do, so I stupidly suggested that she might try using a little less make-up. She exploded, stormed out of the room, bad-mouthed me to all the other girls, so that it was a couple of weeks before I could get any work out of any of them. The woman never spoke to me again.
And oh, yes. Current girlfriend wears makeup. She attracts men like flypaper attracts flies. Sometimes too much makeup. They don't care. Neither do I. It is the best policy.

Make This Thread Great Again, or some such thing, I will say that based on personal observation at close range (i.e. less than 2 yards), the hottest TCU cheer/spirit gal was not in either the cheerleading or showgirl (that is what they call their dance team) squads. The twirler (the one on the left side), was clearly the hottest. Left twirler, as it were.82gradDLSdad said:
This thread started so well with the pictures and all. Sigh...
Also the tall gal on our Cal dance team was easily hot enough to be on the TCU showgirl squad.
I know these are things that are of upmost importance.
