I have a controversial take....but I'm not going to go there.

All I'll day is that Ole Miss and TCU have something in common that is the total opposite of Cal...besides conservative Christian values.

I disagree. When I was a freshman, I would've loved to have debated Descartes or Locke with a cheerleader. Of course, I would've preferred to do something else with her. I'm sure Cal freshmen aren't all that different now than they were some 20 years ago.

FWIW, while I thought the TCU cheerleaders were gorgeous, I will take brains and personality over looks any day of the week. (Granted, there still needs to be some sort of physical beauty minimum, but I'd take an intelligent 6 with a great personality over a 9 with low intellect and no personality.)

Young girls in groups always look alluring at first glance. Individually, they may just be average looking girls. That being said, the TCU cheerleaders individually and collectively were looking good tonight. Cal cheerleaders are alright too.

Bottom line: they never showed the Cal cheer team while consistently showing TCU.

It's just different in the South, consider LSU's squads from a diverse population (it's an all comers university):







Just consider the number of young ladies and the size of each group, cheerleaders, Tiger girls, and Golden Girls.
And the Golden Girls probably have the sexier costumes

even if not everyone is impressed


they even have a bell tower


and their tryouts are well publicized


but out of costume they just look like college girls


it just seems like more than eighteen

We have games at BOTH TCU and Ole Miss. Now that's scheduling.

Different take: When they would show the TCU cheerleaders, I kept thinking maybe they would look hot, but I kept being a little disappointed. Unless you think "blond" + "makeup" automatically = "hot", no, they weren't that hot.

In various years, I have seen the cheerleaders from U$C, UCLA and Oregon look WAY hotter.

Here's the thang about cheerleading in the South...it's as BIG as football and it pairs with football and it's just as freakin' weird because it's basically a religion. Them there Southern gal love the BIG HAIR AND BIG TEETH (or is it the Southern gent/colonel?). And it appears cheer squads down there all emptoy the same dentist/whitening gear, hair stylists and spray tan.

There is something enticing about symmetry/uniformity across gal types in formation and grouping (Art History majors, name that phenomenon) but by the same token, the fakeness or over production of that look shows through...like fluorescent teeth.

But let me be clear...I'm sure all those gals are attractive on their own in their own way...but when you try and make everyone look the same, well it just gets weird. Conversely a place like U$C uses a casting agent to get those results, so it's not a product design question.

To be fair, the Cal cheerleaders have improved drastically in looks over the years. I think the cheer team handing out scholarships has helped out a lot.

And in quantity. I think they were called song girls back then and there were only six (due to limited space on the stadium wall below the students, they had a 3' wide platform on top of the wall). Being an impoverished engineering student I was fortunate to be on a first name basis with two over the years. That was probably about 10% of the co-eds I met at Cal.

If you're arguing that white beauty standards are more prevalent in the South and bias the cheerleaders at Southern universities leading to overrepresentation of white cheerleaders (relative to cheerleaders of color), I doubt anyone would disagree. If you're argument is that there is racial animus involved in the selecting of cheerleaders, that would be a bridge too far absent more evidence.
