While I agree they blew it last night, I still think Carroll has a very good track record in close games going all the way back to USC days.
So I am probably being too pedantic here, but this claim had me curious, so I decided to go back and look at Carroll's record in close games as a head coach. I am defining a "close game" as one decided by 8 points or fewer (one possession). I know that might not account for every late-game situation where there might have been garbage-time TDs and games that were closer than they looked or whatever, but we're just looking for a broad overview here, so I figure that's okay. I am including postseason games, but not preseason games.
Pete Carroll record in close games, by year
NFL
1994 NYJ: 3-3
1997 NE: 5-4
1998 NE: 5-3
1999 NE: 5-5
2010 SEA: 3-0
2011 SEA: 2-5
2012 SEA: 5-6
2013 SEA: 7-3
2014 SEA: 4-4
2015 SEA: 3-6
2016 SEA: 5-3-1
2017 SEA: 4-6
2018 SEA: 5-7
2019 SEA: 10-2TOTAL: 66-57-1
(Without 2019, it's 56-55-1)
NCAA (all at USC)
2001: 1-5
2002: 2-2
2003: 0-1 (guess which one!)
2004: 4-0
2005: 2-1
2006: 3-2
2007: 3-2
2008: 1-1
2009: 3-2
TOTAL: 19-16
So mostly he hovers around .500 in close games like everybody else, except for 2019 which is a major outlier.
