Not sure how secret this is/was. I recall hearing about this when I was on campus in late 80s.

Just about every college campus built before 1970 has 'em. Once the students figured out how to get down there, all kinds of antics took place...in every one of them.

I found out about the tunnels on my 21st Birthday. We went out for legal drinks at Blake's and then one of our crew told us about the tunnels on our walk home through campus. Naturally we had him pull up a grate and down we went, popping up at a totally different part of campus. A crazy but memorable night.

The largest tunnel complex in the area, by far, is found about four miles to the Northwest, roughly 500' under the Berkeley Country Club. Decades of rock mining for El Cerrito Greywacke, used in construction, left a couple of miles of tunnels which originated at the base of the hill. They have been sealed for close to a century.

If your golf ball disappears into the hole, get off the green.

There are also some nice old train tunnels in the Oakland hills.

In the Berkeley Tilden park, there are old missile silos

They are closed by hatches which are locked, but I think they are still there

Here are some photos of the Nike missile base at Tilden/Wildcat Canyon regional park. Just a couple of missile pads left now. As a kid wandering around up there I remember more debris, storage tanks, etcc. Looks like the area was cleaned up in 1974 when the land was deeded to the EBRPD

Those tunnels sound like more fun than going down the laundry chute at the Claremont Hotel.

LOL!! In the mid-1970s, as a camper at a day camp, we did a 1 night a session sleep over. Counselors LOVED to do a night time hike out to the nike base and tell ghost stories. Then walk back.

Yeah - we didn't sleep much.

when we were up there, there was nothing like the base in the picture, and only some broken missile pads left in the overgrown brush ... you probably couldn't find them even if you looked for them, but we ran into them unexpectedly. one had hatches that lead down to the underground silo ... a long dark hole with a rusty ladder straight down into a dark, damp unknown area

just like in the movies...
