I have been working so I haven't been able to watch much after starting the game thread. Bears are hanging in there

Our guards aren't very good. Scary that we haven't recruited any guards for next year.

Shepherd is killing us right now on both ends of the court. He did draw the offensive but otherwise, he has hurt us. Grant has a smaller guy on him and Shepherd runs towards him bringing his defender, thereby preventing Grant from being able to take his man right away. He doesn't close out on their 3 point shooter. He doesn't feed Kelly when he has a smaller defender on him. Not the kind of play I would expect from a grad transfer senior.

Browns foul shooting may be the decider as Hyder cant hold on to the ball
Go Bears!

I'd put Sam in for defense in place of Shepherd.

Difference in the game is turnovers. 14-5 not in our favor. Don't love Celestine's last shot but it is better than running the clock down to 0 and throwing something up.

He has to have the green light if he has a shot

Agree. down 1, you gotta go to the hoop. score or draw the foul.

Grant had the open shot. Almost made it. Which is unfortunate. Too bad.
Played a good game against a good team. Fix the turnovers and the fouls and maybe we win some games.

Outscored 11-3 down the stretch

Coming out of a timeout down by three at the close of a game, Brown cannot be the PG. too easy to foul him.

Our strategy is to try to force a low scoring tight game, but we don't have the guards needed to win close games at the end.

Gave Seton Hall all they could handle though. Good showing by the Bears.

Team played really well overall versus a superior team - play called for Grant was well designed and resulted inh an open 3 pt shot to potentially win it. though depressing to lose a very close game, the team's play was encouraging. Hyder just not confident from his foot surgery and was far too hesitant. Huge drop off when Brown is off the court.

lost opportunity of beating a top 25 team on the road to change the narrative of the program

we had the play ... we had the execution ... we had our vet with a wide open shot from the top of the key

shot looked good, hit inside rim twice and out

We made our share of mistakes but we also made Seton Hall look nothing like a Top-25 team.

Most passes in our offense are to stationary players which are easy to defend and difficult to make. This also makes it difficult for the player catching the ball to then do something with it as they are starting from a dead stop. This means there is very little motion off the ball. When we do catch it with movement, we are catching it while running away from the basket. I hope Fox figues out a way to change that, especially since we aren't a strong 3 point shooting team.

I think this is why Fox uses the dribble hand off offense. To create motion. Unfortunately, other than Brown, and maybe Shepherd, we are unable to turn the corner on defenders as we aren't THAT good at handling the ball.

It all comes down to a lack of skills. We need to improve our shooting, ball handling and passing in general. That rarely happens during the season so we are what we are.

Defensively, we can be a decent team as we do have some length. We are fortunate that Seton Hall isn't a great 3 point shooting team (at least in the 1st half) and aren't super athletic to take us off the bounce.

The tempo currently favors us.
I agree with your thoughts but Monty used to find ways to get guys open: off-ball screens, going backdoor when a defender overplays, etc. We see none of that now. Having Kelly come up to the top of the key to receive a pass does nothing but take him out of position - it's not like he has any cutters to pass to. When there is motion, it's always at half-speed. Brown does change speeds, but only when he has the ball.

Nonetheless, Cal played a much better game today than against Florida.

Except when he coached CAL to something like a 30-10 deficit to start an NCAA play in game. I was so excited and 10 min into the game, I wanted to throw up.
Sometimes Monte found ways to **** the bed too.

He did. He was not really a good tournament coach. He is a better regular season coach. His great skill is assembling a team with well defined roles and a coherent strategy. Usually skilled, but not as athletic and quick as the competition. His one long run at Stanford was mostly due to upsets ahead of them. More often Stanford would be highly ranked going into the Tournament then bow out early. Same at Cal.

Geez Stu, does it always have to be so negative? Instead of implying that Seton Hall looked nothing like a top 25 team, can it possibly be that in this one specific game Cal performed a little bit like they were a top 25 team?

Yes they played very well. And SH may be a top 25 team. Wonder if stu saw Cane sitting on the bench in street clothes. Adding him to the mix when they get into the Big East battles will make them much better and even make us look good having come so close (albeit without Cane)

Not at all negative. We made Seton Hall look nothing like a top-25 team. Mostly with defense they couldn't handle.

Seton Hall took Ohio State down to the wire, and lost by 3 after leading a lot of the game

Florida beat Ohio State by 3
