So since this has kind of turned into a "recruiting" thread, it appears that Okafor and Newell are expected in next year while Andre,Grant,Makale,Jordan are gone. So at this point what two guys are we targeting? As usual I would think it would be a point guard and a true center, but maybe some of you guys can help me out with specific names.
Cal currently has15 schollies on the roster and will need to get down to 13 as Super Seniors depart. Grant, Makale, and Jordan are Super Seniors and cannot be replaced, which creates one open scholly for next year. Kelly isn't out the door just yet, but him staying as a Super Senior would not count against the allowable 13 anyway. That leaves 2 open spots by my count for Okafor and Newell. More attrition would be needed to add anyone else at this point. Do I have this correct?
I think this is right. In my brain, Grant and Makale would have graduated last year, but getting an extra season due to Covid. Jordan is a grad transfer for one season only. If Andre leaves then we have one more to give?
Thanks for the update, which leads to Andre - stay, transfer, or possible pro? Anybody have a guess?
Based on his smile, I don't think he transfers. I'm guessing he stays. That could be a hopeful guess for me, but I think his pro future is not in the NBA, so (hopefully) an overseas potential is not enough to convince him to leave. However, if he does decide to forego the extra year and play overseas, I will cheer for him and think he will do pretty well, wherever he ends up.

No one knows yet (maybe not even him), so it's "officially" 50/50. A lot of it might come down to his academic situation and aspirations. Also, he seems to like playing at Cal and playing for Fox, but does he love it?

If we can't add a guard in this recruiting class we are in trouble.

Having Joel run the point as a senior next season will be fine but we really need to groom someone for when he leaves. A true PG would be ideal, but a ballhandling combo would be fine.

I don't know what the issue with Hyder is. Fox is very short-leashed when it comes to injuries. Seems like he benches guys for the smallest ailments. Which makes me wonder why he's playing Hyder if he is indeed hurt like a lot of folks are saying. Hurt or not, Hyder's confidence is shot. I hope he can put things together, hard watching him play when he can barely complete a pass.

Maybe Marsalis can handle the ball a little next year and initiate the offense?
Hyder looked good at times last year. He seems to have really lost confidence this season.

Unfortunately, I disagree with your first sentence.

In my opinion, a successful step forward next year is dependent on Andre returning. The team desperately needs him to stay!! If he does, with expected improvement from the returning players and the two new guys I think the postseason is in reach.
That would obviously be huge for us, but from his perspective not sure if it will be beneficial for him. Perhaps he could get more pre-season fanfare and continue to raise his stock? Seems like his stock is already high now and there's only a marginal benefit if he returns. That's if his goal is next level somewhere, which certainly is a viable option for him.

If he wants to play more college basketball, he might grad transfer somewhere he can play more as a forward to demonstrate his ability at the next level there.

My guess is he grad transfers to a legit tourney team.

Watched the game. We didn't want it badly enough. Lazy, sloppy ball handling led to a few easy steals right where we had a chance to cut the lead to 2 or 3, on multiple occasions. Head not in the game last night. UCLA played with more urgency and purpose. They may be more talented, but we should have been right in that game the whole way. All said, We COVERED!!! Woohoo!
I was at both games. Cal played quite hard and I think this assessment is way off the mark. The reason the Bears covered isn't because of relative talent, but because they scrapped even though their shots weren't falling (hello Grant). The Bears actually were in the game until close to the end.

Some things worked, some things didn't. This team has become scrappy, not sure where it suddenly came from, but it's there. (Credit to Fox, I guess). They are *way* overmatched by UCLA's talent, so no matter if the shots were falling or not, UCLA probably would have just pushed on the gas pedal harder had it been closer.

Tonight is an excellent test against UW. Let's see how they perform.

Well better than this year. He's regressed. Whether it's health related or not, he's not playing well.

Could I have a Yugo instead, please?

Why are we even wasting our time with this guy? He can't recruit, and his coaching style sucks. There's absolutely no reason to believe his best miles are still ahead of him.

In summary...

Super Seniors Anticevich, Foreman, Shepherd
Seniors Kelly
Juniors Brown, Hyder, Kuany, Klonaras, Thiemann, Thorpe
Sophomores Bowser, Celestine
Freshmen Alajiki, Anyanwu, Roberson
Incoming Newell, Okafor

The Questions going into 2022-23 Season:
-Does Kelly comeback for a 5th year by using Covid exemption?
-If Kelly does comeback, it doesn't affect our 13 scholarship cap. Meaning as it stands now, we can't add another scholarship player unless someone leaves. Will anyone leave? Graduate early?
-Like last year, are transfers immediately eligible for next year?

We have a lot of leadership, scoring and playmaking to make up for once our super seniors and possibly Kelly depart. A core of Joel, Kuany, Celestine & Alajiki next year is not enough. I hope Fox has something up his sleeve.

HIghly likely Kelly leaves - not due to dissatifaction, just that he will have graduated and he is eager to play somewhere professionally. Issue is to get a solid point guard to spell Joel and also for the freshman to mature - physically fine - its more showing up on time/learning the plays, understanding the full commitment required to becoming a top player. DJ may or not be physically able to contribute next season and will Bowser and Roberson put the required training in? Plus with the dead schlorship to Klonaras, the staff has a difficult path ahead. Matt Bradley comment is that he misses his teammates, but also recognizes the importance of hoops and consistent commitment toward becoming better players - that his new teammates have. No excuses, but the typical player at Cal has more to manage school work wise and some players don't have the driving passion required to excell.

Nothing out of control, just learning to be consistent in one's dedication/approach - maturity issues for first year freshmen. Separately - Joel is cleared to play Sat, but given the required isolation parameters, He cannot leave till Sat morning and will land at 12.27pm - for a 1pm game! Cutting it literally down to the tip off arrival. His 2nd test was negative (no symptoms for either test and likely a false first test recording).

How is he going to get to the arena and dress in 30 minutes? Maybe dress on the plane?

Arena is 8 minutes from airport - team has his basketball stuff and he won't have any luggage etc - backpack only. But yes its down to the wire. Plus he has not been with the team since tuesday. So conditioning, shooting has been solo by him. Definitely frustrating as he is healthy and was penalized by a false test - yet had to isolate and then clear the 2nd one.

I posted in a separate thread some nuggets from a conversation my son recently had with Jordan Mathews on a pickup basketball court in LA. Your comments about academic distractions at Cal are in line with what Mathews told my son about the differences between playing at Cal vs Gonzaga.

Thanks and really mostly a supporter both with financial donations, basketball passion and help with the team's housing needs. The goal/mission has been with the support of many loyal basketball supporters/alumni,to provide secure, quality housing near campus/arena at an affordable rent (following all NCAA rules) ie. housing cannot exceed 50% of student athletes at the housing site, rent has to be market range etc. The site is really nice and living conditions are excellent - the hope is to springboard this unique quality situation into an recruiting advantage. Conversely, my goal is to create a similar housing opportunity for some of the football players. Housing is a huge issue/need to the football program and Oregon/Washington for example offer superior housing options to recruits/players. Unfortunately several football players live off campus in tougher areas to save monies (which they send home to help their immediate families- delta between rent and schlorship monies). This creates monitoring obstacles, on time accountability for practices, classes etc. Having the basketball team mostly together (10 at one location and generally freshmen are in dorms) is a huge plus all the way around. Btw the guys are solid first rate young men - never any issues and are academically driven as well. I tease a bit and say part of the issue is we don't have anyone that would steal your lunch money! Never can be a shortage of toughness, willing to use your body for screens, box outs, loose balls , effort driven man D and rim protection. And yes the academic demands at Cal are much more than the other conf programs. Its especially illustrated in the first 2 years - where several other programs offer a # of easier classes, allowing those student/athletes to completely focus on their sport.

Ucla comporable, Stanford surprisingly easier at least initially. Also the academic support while better at Cal than a decade ago, is still not the same as Stanford/Ucla/USC. UC San Diego I would not know. Bottom line the vast majority of Conf programs have much easier academics to navigate, without debate for the first 2 years of pre major classes.
Just the reality and that means the staff has to work harder and show better recruiting results than currently shown. Have to dominate Prolithic Prep (the occasional 2K not enough) and Oakland Soldiers/Sacramento programs. These areas have very solid prospects and have to local wins to build up the pipeline.

At Cal, you actually are required to attend classes. This is a major obstacle in competing against Pac-12 competition.
