Based on his smile, I don't think he transfers. I'm guessing he stays. That could be a hopeful guess for me, but I think his pro future is not in the NBA, so (hopefully) an overseas potential is not enough to convince him to leave. No one knows yet (maybe not even him), so it's "officially" 50/50. A lot of it might come down to his academic situation and aspirations. Also, he seems to like playing at Cal and playing for Fox, but does he love it?

I don't know what the issue with Hyder is. Fox is very short-leashed when it comes to injuries. Seems like he benches guys for the smallest ailments. Which makes me wonder why he's playing Hyder if he is indeed hurt like a lot of folks are saying. Hurt or not, Hyder's confidence is shot. I hope he can put things together, hard watching him play when he can barely complete a pass.

I was at both games. Cal played quite hard and I think this assessment is way off the mark. The reason the Bears covered isn't because of relative talent, but because they scrapped even though their shots weren't falling (hello Grant). The Bears actually were in the game until close to the end.bearsandgiants said:

Some things worked, some things didn't. This team has become scrappy, not sure where it suddenly came from, but it's there. (Credit to Fox, I guess). They are *way* overmatched by UCLA's talent, so no matter if the shots were falling or not, UCLA probably would have just pushed on the gas pedal harder had it been closer.
Tonight is an excellent test against UW. Let's see how they perform.

HIghly likely Kelly leaves - not due to dissatifaction, just that he will have graduated and he is eager to play somewhere professionally. Issue is to get a solid point guard to spell Joel and also for the freshman to mature - physically fine - its more showing up on time/learning the plays, understanding the full commitment required to becoming a top player. DJ may or not be physically able to contribute next season and will Bowser and Roberson put the required training in? Plus with the dead schlorship to Klonaras, the staff has a difficult path ahead. Matt Bradley comment is that he misses his teammates, but also recognizes the importance of hoops and consistent commitment toward becoming better players - that his new teammates have. No excuses, but the typical player at Cal has more to manage school work wise and some players don't have the driving passion required to excell.BC Calfan said:

Arena is 8 minutes from airport - team has his basketball stuff and he won't have any luggage etc - backpack only. But yes its down to the wire. Plus he has not been with the team since tuesday. So conditioning, shooting has been solo by him. Oddly. players sometimes have great games in situations like that. A little like when Grant had by far his best game last season shortly after his surgery, then tailed off later.

I posted in a separate thread some nuggets from a conversation my son recently had with Jordan Mathews on a pickup basketball court in LA. Your comments about academic distractions at Cal are in line with what Mathews told my son about the differences between playing at Cal vs Gonzaga.

Thanks and really mostly a supporter both with financial donations, basketball passion and help with the team's housing needs. The goal/mission has been with the support of many loyal basketball supporters/alumni,to provide secure,quality housing near campus/arena at an affordable rent (following all NCAA rules) ie. housing cannot exceed 50% of student athletes at the housing site, rent has to be market range etc. The site is really nice and living conditions are excellent - the hope is to springboard this unique quality situation into an recruiting advantage. Conversely, my goal is to create a similar housing opportunity for some of the football players. Housing is a huge issue/need to the football program and Oregon/Washington for example offer superior housing options to recruits/players. Unfortunately several football players live off campus in tougher areas to save monies (which they send home to help their immediate families- delta between rent and schlorship monies). This creates monitoring obstacles, on time accountability for practices, classes etc. Having the basketball team mostly together (10 at one location and generally freshmen are in dorms) is a huge plus all the way around. Btw the guys are solid first rate young men - never any issues and are academically driven as well. I tease a bit and say part of the issue is we don't have anyone that would steal your lunch money! Never can be a shortage of toughness, willing to use your body for screens, box outs, loose balls , effort driven man D and rim protection. And yes the academic demands at Cal are much more than the other conf programs. Ucla comporable, Stanford surprisingly easier at least initially. Also the academic support while better at Cal than a decade ago, is still not the same as Stanford/Ucla/USC. UC San Diego I would not know. Just the reality and that means the staff has to work harder and show better recruiting results than currently shown. Have to dominate Prolithic Prep (the occasional 2K not enough) and Oakland Soldiers/Sacramento programs. These areas have very solid prospects and have to local wins to build up the pipeline.
At Cal, you actually are required to attend classes. This is a major obstacle in competing against Pac-12 competition.
