Different starting lineup than last (cancelled) game.

What happened was, an hour before the last game, the now-demoted starters thought it would be fun to go up on the roof of the facility and enjoy a good view of France... in their basketball cleats.

Can't tell if this is a joke that the starters caused the leak and thus were benched, or if that actually happened, and why you call their footwear "cleats."

An attempt at humor. I laughed at my own joke, even if no one else did. I was hoping "basketball cleats" was a dead giveaway.
Too bad ai told people it happened. Not funny.
Go Bears!

A 26 point loss is described as "came up short"?

This was Lars' old team?

You told people that Cal's exhibition game in France was cancelled due to a roof leak at the venue and what caused the leak was that some Cal players were walking around on the roof prior to the game in their basketball cleats in order to get a good view of France? Also those players have now been demoted and your source for all this was that some idiot wrote it on the Internet?

However funny / not funny this was before, it is now getting hilarious. (Yes, I know you, too, are kidding. Good one!)

According to the article by Cal Athletics, Thiemann played for their "Pro-B" squad. Sometimes these franchises will have more than one roster. It would make sense that he didn't play for this exact team (The "Pro-A" squad?) because they sound like they are older and pretty good and Lars wasn't all that hot three years ago, though he's becoming decent lately.

Anyway, congrats to the German team for barely escaping with a win (by 26 points).

Well, not "top flight." Germany's top flight players play for one of the 18 teams in the Basketball Bundeslinga.

The Bayer Giants Leverkusen is one of 16 teams that play in Germany's second tier league "Pro A" which is at least higher than the third tier league "Pro B." Leverkusen was promoted to ProA in 2019-20 after winning the ProB championship.

From the Bayer Giants Leverkusen website:

When the last seconds of the test match ran between the "Gigants" and the "Golden Bears", the 547 spectators rose in the Ostermann Arena and caused a lot of noise again. At 85:59, the record champion prevailed in an interesting encounter in which the Farbenstdter made a refreshingly good impression. This was also pleased with head coach Hansi Gnad, who found only words of praise for the presentation of his team: "Of course, I am very satisfied with the performance of my boys. After only five days of training, the players have already implemented some of what we want to see from them. The coaching staff has tried to convey to the team in the previous units that we always want to be on the move and I think you have seen that. That was a really good game, although I didn't expect this dominance. Maybe the opponent also underestimated us a little."

In fact, the GIANTS quickly showed their limits to guests from the United States. BAYER quickly settled down with an 11:0 "run" at the beginning of the meeting and the "Cal" around Center Lars Thiemann tried to keep up with the hosts. But the high Leverkusen pace caused plenty of problems at the US university. On the offensive, there were many gaps for Dennis Heinzmann, Dejan Kovacevic & Co., while the defense already caused fear and terror. The first quarter ended clearly in favor of the "giant of the Rhine" with the result of 26:10.

Also in the second section, the Leverkuseners held their foot on the accelerator and continued to scort tirelessly. Although Coach Gnad tried different rotations, there was nothing of a lack of gameplay. Whether from a distance, near the board or from the free throw line: The guidance of 20 counters (46:26) to the break was completely deserved in height and caused rapture among many spectators on Bismarckstrae.

However, anyone who now assumed that the GIANTS would reduce their commitment in the third round saw himself at the latest in the 28th. Minute of play deceived. After the newcomer Marius Stoll ensured a lead of more than 30 points by threesome (66:35), it was now clear at the latest that the Rhinelanders will leave the pitch as winners. Subsequently, there was diligent rotation and so the youngsters of the squad also received many minutes to prove themselves on the floor. The great 85:59 success was the result of a solid game with few mistakes.

Of course, the focus of the fans was more on the newcomers. With 18 points, Melik Martin was top scorer of the game, Robert Drijencic (11) and Haris Hujic (10) scored double digits and Marius Stoll was the best rebounder of his colors with seven rebounds. Head coach Gnad was very satisfied with his new protgs: "All newcomers left a solid impression. Xavier Bishop may not have scored as many points as some expected, but he also has to find his role in the team first. Nevertheless, he fully put himself at the service of the team and did not act as a single player, which I liked. We must not forget that Matthew Meredith and Robert Merz were both out due to illness. The boys will provide additional quality in our rotation. Of course, there is still a lot of work ahead of us, but I am very confident that we will gradually improve as a team."

The BAYER GIANTS Leverkusen will continue on Friday, 08/26/2022, at 7 p.m. in Haspe. In Westphalia, you can meet in the local
