This just goes to show you're old and out of touch with current fashion brand trends. Take a look at this to educate yourself better on that front:

I get they are saying they are a cool throwback brand. So is the canvas converse shoes that have been in for years now

but I can tell you that Nike is making a killing selling retro shoes like Air Max, Jordans, Air Force 1, and in a million colorways

And I don't see anyone on the courts or gym wearing champion, and when schools do have some champion clothes, they don't have an exclusive. Even schools like SF State who have Champion, also have a lot of Under Armour clothing (more than Cal actually)

I think it's Cal Admin that are out of touch when it comes to this area

I don't understand the need to start crying about literally everything. All schools license out to multiple vendors for different things and it has zero to do with who supplies your uniforms. Hence why SC, Texas, tOSU, Georgia etc are also signed with Hanes.

Or did you think that every single Cal item you see sold anywhere is Under Armour?

So your issue is that it's a non-exclusive agreement? That's kind of foolish. If anything, that's in Cal's favor, since it means Cal can sign more deals with other companies. This isn't marriage, Cal doesn't have to be wedded to just one company.

That just means you're just too young to have developed a snobbish attitude against Champion. The complaining posters are much older and seem to think that today's young people hold the same attitudes they do.

Next thing you know, they'll complain that the Cal Band should play music by Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones, and Abba during halftime because that's what kids like!

Funny but Champion was in back the day in the early 90s. Then was not cool and mostly Ross/Marshall's fodder. But now the younguns seem to like it. Cycle of fashion.

It could be worse. Cal could have signed with Fruit of the Loom. But that would have been politically incorrect in my day.

I'd say Kinney on the highway high cuts would be the equivalent in athletic shoes to Hanes in the world of underwear. (Again, in my day).

I'm glad Cal didn't sign with Converse. I just bought a pair of their modern copy of the famous Chuck Taylor All-Star model, and they are nothing like the original. Sole is too hard, and they don't fit after two returns. The original Converse All Star was the shoe of choice for Bill Russell's Boston Celtics, in a black low-cut model, which us San Francisco kid thought took a few points off their average. We all preferred the Converse white shoes, high cut in the '50s, while the low cuts were more popular in the '60s, along with resurgence of Pro-Keds made by Wolverine, and were favored by several NBA stars.

of course I don't think every single item Cal sells is Under Armour, but apparently with this EXCLUSIVE 10 year agreement, every single item Cal sells will be Hanes/Champion

as for your SC, Texas and Ohio State example, Champion does not have EXCLUSIVE rights (I didn't check Georgia). For example, from their official student store below.

So I guess the top names in college sports are out of touch and don't know what they are talking about

Ha. I didn't expect to set off a firestorm. Cal already had a deal with Hanes/Champion. It's a separate license from Under Armour. Look here:
https://calstudentstore.berkeley.edu/merchandise/champion

This is printwear. It's the blank t-shirts, hoodies, etc., that organizations buy to customize for their company, softball team, college, etc. The benefit to partnering with Hanes/Champion is that the Champion logo also appears on the shirt. So, instead of just "regular Cal t-shirt", it's a "regular Cal t-shirt with a Champion logo". It's slightly cooler.

I know Cal already had Champion clothes. And I've looked at them and find them very generic.

However they didn't have Exclusive rights until now.

But if you are saying Exclusive rights means that other brands such as UA, Nike, Adidas, etc can get a license from Cal and offer Cal/Nike branded clothes then I mis-understand the meaning of "Exclusive"

Note the phrasing. The press release states:

New 10-year agreement includes the company's iconic Champion and Hanes brands and gives HBI exclusive rights across mass and local retail channels.

It's unclear what "mass and local retail channels" means. I don't think it means that the Cal Student Store and other places will only sell Champion. This doesn't seem possible since Cal still has an agreement with Under Armour. My guess is that "mass and local" refers to Bay Area mass and department stores (like Costco, Macy's, and J.C. Penney) that only carry limited amounts of Cal stuff. I have bought Cal clothing at Costco and JCP in recent years. Hanes already has wholesale relationships with these sorts of retailers since they carry Champion and Hanes clothes nationally.

you say that today's young people prefer Champion over Nike.

I guess the 'young people' I'm around are unique

I actually did an informal poll at my gym today as I was waiting to get in the next game... 15 guy, mostly high school and college age

... most wore nike shoes, 2 wore Adidas, 1 wore UA, and 1 wore a skater brand

... they wore an array of shirts, including one player who was wearing a Cal shirt with a drawing of a player with a Big C behind it. I think it also had a number so I thought he might be a current or past FB player. I unfortunately never had the chance to talk to him.

Several of the players wore no name solid t-shirts, some of which were very well used. These could be any brand, but maybe they were champion. Some wore workout shirts from various sports brands (it's common that people go to the gym primarily to workout, but also play basketball. Of the brands I could actually tell because they had a prominent logo on it, 4 were Nike and none were Adidas or Champion (Champion doesn't typically display their logo prominently like the 3 major brands do. Instead they just have their small classic logo, but Champion is now also selling clothes with big/prominant logos, but I literally have never seen anyone wear these (I'll be more aware in the future to see if there are actually a lot of people wearing their clothes). The possible Cal FB player was the only one wearing UA, although I think there typically would be more people wearing UA.

Now that's just my court observation

Nike is the most prominent brand in all the major sports stores, and they have their own stores including Nike Town, Nike Stores and Nike Outlet (I'm sure Champion also has a outlet store, but I've never seen a Champion premium or regular store.

When I go to any of these Nike stores (including Footlocker which has a Nike/Jumpman House of Hoops I see many 'young people'

Then there are the people I know (family, friends, etc) and those I've coach). When Cal switched from Jumpman/Nike to UA, there was a similar discussion (and I was in the minority then too). At that time I asked players what their favorite brand was. Some said they don't really have a favorite or 'don't know'. Most by far said Nike. I was surprised that a few said the UA Curry, and Adidas rarely came up. No one said Champion (again this was several years ago)

Then you can look at the Cal players and what they wear. Certainly a lot of them wear UA because they are given these shoes, but the next most common shoes are Nike. One of the women players actually has a small business where she custom paints Nike shoes. There is even a special Nike app SNKRS that is just for upcoming drops that is followed religiously by many, with a very active collectors following

Then there are the numbers. See this article from May 2022. It shows market share showing Nike with 33% of the market with #2 Adidas at 6%

but also talks about Nike "Super Fans". Do you think there are any Champion Super Fans?

https://www.indigo9digital.com/blog/how-nike-is-turning-your-smart-phone-into-a-digital-shopping-assistant

basically, Nike and Adidas are the premium sports brands, followed by UA.
Champion is also present in many college student stores, dept stores such as Macy's, etc, but is positioned more as a generic budget brand

in the official cal store there are currently 5 "Featured" brands including UA, Champion and Fanatics. Then there is Beastmode which isn't a "Featured" brand.

All use some type of Cal, California, Berkeley logo, although the logos are not identical. For example the UA California script is different than the California script used by other brands (the Cal Legends NIL collective is a good example of this too)

so does "exclusive" mean that Champion will be the only brand who can make apparel with a Cal or California logo on it? Maybe, but probably not.

does it mean the website makes Champion the most prominent promotion, but on the website, making the "Featured brands" the next level? Maybe, and if so I think this is harmless.

does it mean as you are saying that Champion has exclusive rights to sell Cal gear at Macys, Lowes, Footlocker, etc. Maybe, and if that's the case I have zero issue with that.

But my concern is if Exclusive means there are not even a UA branded Cal apparel, and in the future Nike/Adidas branded Cal apparel because of the 'exclusive' agreement I do have an issue with it.

Basically, what I would like to see is the Texas, Ohio State, USC example, where Champion is sold, but also clothes from the major brands (Nike, Adidas, UA)

My concern is when UA signed, all the Nike clothes went up with a fire sale, and there hasn't been a single Nike Cal item since. Hopefully Champion 'exclusive' won't have the same impact

do you think that Texas, Ohio State and USC only sell their clothing to young people, however you define it?

there are plenty of grown adults that care, just like there are plenty of grown adults who care about driving around BMWs. Take the label off, and it's a VW (bracing for the blowback from that statement)

by the way, if Cal really wanted to be a leader and sell tons of Cal gear, they should license Lulumon for women. That brand is so popular with women that the company is now selling used Lulumon clothes!

First, I never claimed young people prefer Champion over Nike. Rather, I said Champion is popular among today's young people.

Also, so what if you saw lots of Nike branded gear on young people. What, you think if someone wears Nike, he can't possibly also wear Champion gear? To quote Johnny Mac, "You cannot be serious!"

Furthermore, you obviously must be aware that your little "informal poll" does not in any way negate the argument that Champion is now popular among young people, an argument which was made and supported by the article I linked earlier. Please don't treat the rest of us as morons by pretending it does.

In any case, I repeat my question, which you failed to actually answer: what exactly is your complaint with the deal? It's rather hard to hold a discussion about the faults you find with the deal if you refuse to identify them.

I don't think this deal is that noteworthy- it's certainly not for athletic uniforms and such as HanesChampin does not appear to be in that business.

"U.C. Berkeley joins the University of Southern California, University of Texas, The Ohio State University, University of North Carolina, University of Georgia, Villanova, and University of Tennessee, among others, that have primary apparel partnerships with HBI."

There are other large schools that have "primary" partnerships with Hanes that have many many other apparel options and athletic sponsorship agreements with Nike. Would guess Champion gets some exclusive gear, but not the exclusive right to make certain types of clothing. Champion has been around a long time and isn't a brand to scoff at, it's not like they'll be primarily distributing apparel with the Hanes name on it.

For athletics, Nike or bust right?

Need to get some New Era hats back too.

I get that kids may be swayed by a logo. I recall caring about that kind of thing myself back in high school. However, I am a bit surprised to find that it would matter to a grown adult to such a degree.
there are plenty of grown adults that care, just like there are plenty of grown adults who care about driving around BMWs.
I had no idea that Nike and BMW carried the same status symbol among adults.

My point is a lot of people of all ages care about brands

Whether that's cars, purses, kitchen appliances… or t-shirts

To say that is silly is ok

To say that isn't true is just wrong

Just about the only sensible comment in this discussion has been from the OP

He replied that maybe I was interpreting the press release wrong and that "exclusive" was only related to Cal gear sold in mass market stores such as macy's, footlocker, lowes, etc

And therefore Cal's uniform partner (now UA and in the future hopefully Nike) will be able to sell Cal branded fan gear just like Texas, OSU and USC. Maybe UA is a carve out from "exclusive " in the actual Hanes contract since UA already had a licensing contract will cal, and that any future uniform partner would also be allowed an exception

IF SO, GREAT! I think this is a good deal

I have my doubts based on my experience with marketing and licensing.

My cal example was when UA became our partner, the nike gear went on fire sale and is completely gone. I assume that was because of some type of an exclusive licensing agreement

Also, there were several stores that sold a ton of cal branded gear around campus. All 3 stopped selling Cal branded clothes (one had a gigantic room dedicated to cal clothing, now there are only a small section of cal clothes on fire sale. The other devoted almost their entire bottom half of the store to cal gear. Now nothing. The third is closed after decades in business

Was this related to licensing? That is what i heard, but not from a reliable source.

Licenses can be written in all kinds of ways… including distribution channels, geographical, types of product, term/duration

Thats why you can't run a bluray disk of a movie from another country. The would is divided into 6? Licensing Regions

I think the reason we use the same U C Berkeley ad for so long is the licensing agreement is still in place and cal doesn't want to spend the money for a new licensing agreement when UC Berkeley has been paid for
