Nobody gives up several million dollars for dignity (unless they already have much more than several million dollars banked). If Cal would let me, I'd take the job for those terms, coach the team into the ground while wearing nothing but Oski boxer shorts and letting you all throw hot dogs, nacho's and sodas at me during every time out while I did the macarena at center court.

No, because in my scenario it is part of the job description that Cal requires. Who knows why Cal does what Cal does? It would make as much sense as whatever it is they judge Knowlton by. And the games would be more entertaining which is admittedly a really low clearing of a really low bar.

Walton's cutesy Irish comment (which Ted Robinson has said before), is probably benign enough on its face but it is a race based quip involving Black and White people, and as such, probably not the best optics coming out of the mouth of an old White guy.

My guess is that African immigrants in Ireland have experienced more than their share of racism and that they might be offended by such comments…..however if Okafor and Sam Alijiki are not offended by Walton's comments, I suppose I have no standing to be.

Walton thinks his schtick, with the tired empty commentary, is more important than doing his job commenting on the actual game. That is what is irritating and wrong. The game should be his focus (which for Cal is painful).

FWIW, I have said the same thing about Starkey, albeit for different reasons. Starkey fails to timely and accurately describe the game, which is the most important job for a play-by-play guy. Unacceptable. But unlike Walton, Starkey isn't doing schtick or making it about him.

The only time I like Bill Walton being part of a telecast is when UCLA is one of the teams playing and UCLA loses!

I'm almost there (generationally) and generally like Walton - when he is prepared and focused. But for me, the last telecast was sort of sad.

I don't know about you, but at this stage in my life (kids are adulting, semi-retired, living the good life), I've noticed a number of my close relations (family and social) - getting to the point where they can't stop talking, but have nothing pertinent to say or can't remember details and keep on point. Many of my elders suffered from age-related mental disorders of varying degrees and it was tough to witness. Seeing it creep in with my generation is very sad.

That is kind of how I felt watching Bill on Wednesday.

The thing is, guys, I kind of agree with you, but it is pretty clear that Bill gets his status on these broadcasts because they think he appeals to viewers. I don't know if they are drastically wrong, but I'm really sure if Walton didn't have his schtick, we wouldn't be seeing him nearly as often, if at all. He'd just be another guy who played basketball a long time ago. I don't like it, but he does it because it pays.

I remember one broadcast, back when it was possible for us to lose a game and it be considered an upset, when some mid major was beating us and he literally said at one point that the other team was playing the best game in the history of basketball. I guess I can die happy. Who knew when I turned on a simple nonconference game between Cal and Northwest Montana Valley State that I would witness history that day?

I completely agree about the age related stuff. It is painful

But my honest opinion was that game was so horrific they needed someone to be the talking jackass. I mean, we had 10 points at some point very deep into the 1st half. What else can those guys talk about when all that is happening is offensive incompetence? I think we Cal fans have grown somewhat accustomed to this product and incrementally lose sight of how truly bad this is. But if you are a broadcaster who only sees this every once in awhile you probably sit there thinking "holy #$#@, what do we do with this pile of crud"

I've repeatedly posted that I like Walton, partly because I read his autobiography. He is completely different than any other broadcaster, he likes Berkeley, and it was an ugly game. In fact, perhaps we should invite him back to our AZ game!

His Irish comment wasn't one of his good moments however

That is an intimidating set of gnashers!
